New signing Barry Cotter

Featured Replies

Sounds interesting, seems to split opinion at Barnsley but he played 40 games for them last season. Maybe starting games rather than being a sub will do him good. Hope he's a magical signing!

An interesting signing by Notts, a pacy right footed winger that can play on both flanks & play as a wingback too. He has a very long throw which could be very useful.

Head Coach Martin Paterson must have had a hand in his signing as he worked with Barry as Assistant Head Coach at Barnsley.

Not surprised that Notts have gone for a loan signing once again. If he can be as successful as George Abbott was during his loan period last season with Notts, Barry will have been a great signing.

He certainly gives Notts more strength in depth & if the signing is cleared by the EFL he will be playing against Alfreton tomorrow.

Notts had trouble getting behind opposition defenders last season so with his outstanding pace, & with the right service, that will change.

This is an encouraging signing, & hopefully Notts will sign a midfield playmaker & another striker before the league season starts.

looks a good signing, i have already seen some fans complain and speculate that someone will be off but maybe we are freeing up one of our wing backs to play further forward? the shape could be changing. i am not against loans when they are quality, so i dont get the "owners dont want to spend" comments on the squad or that its another cheap option. i dont know much about him but i have seen comments from people wishing him well which makes me more confident.

He's direct and should be exciting to watch, as he does like being involved and taking players on. I am sure a member like, @Dripsey3 has extensive knowledge regarding Barry Cotter. For those who don't, Barnsley fans quite like him from what I have seen. Mostly because he's a constant attacking threat, I think he will be a great addition to our squad. He should be a great player for us against League Two opposition.

Barry Cotter

Straight from the horses mouth in an establishment in tarn (I’m not saying anymore but anyone who’s read past posts could probably figure it out, this...

It wasn’t an area I thought we needed to strengthen, but I’m pleased with the signing. We don’t yet know how we’ll set up or what changes Martin Paterson might make, but Barry Cotter looks like a player who’s better than League Two level.

I always prefer permanent signings, though maybe this could become one if he does well. Time will tell, but fingers crossed he settles in quickly and makes an impact. It’s been a long time since we’ve had this much quality out wide, and the middle of the pitch is shaping up nicely too.

He looks a solid signing, but I do always keep in mind that loan players don’t always give it everything. Still, I think Barry Cotter will add some energy down the flank. This might even free someone else up to take that attacking midfield slot we’ve been hoping to fill. I won’t guess who that might be, there are a few possibilities, and knowing Notts, we might still bring someone else in for the role. Welcome to Meadow Lane, Cotter!

@DangerousSausage, some fans might not agree about this signing, like when people argue about liking coconut. Right now, everyone’s feeling a bit low and not very confident.

But when the season starts, having a player like this could really help Notts. He likes to go forward and attack, and that’s what we need. I remember him playing for Barnsley, so the fact they wanted him shows he must be good.

Interesting reading @TheSkipper, thanks for sharing. Judging by that, his main problem is the stepovers. Barnsley isn't the kind of place that appreciates stepovers.

It sounds like he's another wide player whose strengths are going forward rather than defending. I hope we can get the most out of his strengths - maybe he'll be a wizard on the wing for us?

He also knows Martin Paterson (and Connor Grant) from Barnsley and seems keen to work with him again. That's a plus as well.

I get why some people might worry that a loan player might not give it everything, but Notts is a club that wants to win. If he wants to be on the pitch, he’ll need to play his part and work hard. I think, on paper, this looks like a solid signing. I’m a bit curious if Notts will try to sign Barry Cotter for good if he does well. It sounds like he wants to leave Barnsley anyway. I hope he starts strong and fits in quickly. We could be really exciting down the wings, and with the new players coming into the middle of the pitch, maybe we won’t be as easy to figure out.

@Ash, the talk about his strengths and weaknesses reminds me of when we signed Nemane. He was L2 quality at best in my view, but we could definitely have done with him at times last season.

I'm looking forward to seeing Cotter play and making my own mind up!

It’s a good sign that we’re adding players who can cover areas where we might get unlucky with injuries. That kind of planning helps keep us strong across the season. It also makes me wonder if we might be switching up the formation a bit. One thing that stands out is how attacking these signings are. That could make things more exciting going forward.

Once we’ve sorted the keeper situation, I’m hopeful we’ll play with more creativity. It feels like we’re trying to be braver and not just go backwards all the time. Let’s hope it works.

What I think we missed most about Aaron Nemane was how he could cut the ball back and make chances just by running with it. He was really good at that and could get things going when nothing else was working.

I didn’t think he was the best at defending, but when it came to skill and speed, he could twist past defenders like it was easy. I do agree, we did miss him sometimes.

Some of the reactions I’ve seen are honestly quite embarrassing. It feels like everyone’s an expert, until they’re proven wrong. I don’t understand how people can say a player who’s played for Barnsley in League One is only National League standard.

I get the concerns some people have about bringing in a player on loan. But from what others have said, and from reading the link @TheSkipper posted, it sounds like he wants to leave Barnsley, and the club seems to agree.

If he performs well and we’ve got the funds, maybe this loan spell could show he belongs at Notts. Sometimes a loan move is the first step, and not all players sign straight away. He might want time to get settled and see what life in Nottingham is like.

I’m not going to act like I know everything about him, because I don’t, but I’ve heard of him before. And Barnsley don’t just sign anyone, so that says something about his ability.

I know nothing about him either, I will be interested to see him play before I make a judgement, he’s played 66 games for Barnsley in League one so I would hope he’s a decent player.

Slowly but surely I can see a team being assembled to aim for the top. Everything seems to be taking on a more positive vibe and just like a jigsaw falling into place. The more attack minded we are, the less time we spend in our own half. Different playmakers are surely going to make us a better team and harder to play against. The number one target now has to be a good number one πŸ‘Œ. My late father would say a Lev Yashin type would fit the bill, who knows where the future will take us. Keep your faith in all the club are doing as their best should be our best. 🫑

I've read a teeny bit about him and he looks to be experienced, rapid, direct and a good bloke. To add to his bow he's quite versatile for transitional tactics halfway through a game. Few people have suggested that we might look towards a 4-3-3 or a 4-2-3-1 but then change to a 3-5-2 when we need to mix it up, so Cotter (and to a lesser extent Tsaroulla) provide both FB and WB coverage.

Good signing, if not one of the best to give us an indication of what's to come.

Barry has plenty of potential. He did well in his time in the League Of Ireland. His long throw is a serious weapon. He doesn't just launch and hope for the best. It's fairly accurate. It's a serious weapon to have in our locker. He has plenty of pace and bombs forward but I don't think he enjoys the defensive duties much! Wing back probably suits him best.
