  2. Cameron demands a 'rethink' on England World Cup kit which will cost fans costs up to £90

    • Premier wades into row over launch less than a year after last new kit
    • Urges Nike and Football Association to think again about costs
    • Sports minister Helen Grant says price is 'not right' and punishes fans
    • Joey Barton says the £90 costs it is 'taking the mickey out of the fans'

The Prime Minister said fans would 'welcome' the Football Association and kit makers Nike reconsidering the hefty costs which have been condemned as a 'rip-off' by fans.

The government has insisted the charges are 'not right' and risk punishing loyal supporters who are 'the bedrock of our national game'.

Worth it? The home and away kits go on sale for as much as £90 before the tournament kicks off

Fans are unhappy that the new, costly kit has been launched less than a year after the last new strip went on sale.

It was only last May that the previous home kit was released, which has been worn just seven times.

The red away kit, released even more recently in June 2013, has had just two airings.

The £90 shirt is identical to those worn by Roy Hodgson's side, while an adult 'stadium' England shirt is priced at £60 and shirts for children aged between eight and 15 cost £42, with mini-kits priced at £40.

Sports minister Helen Grant took to Twitter to say: 'On £90 England football shirts for fans, it's not right. Loyal supporters are the bedrock of our national game - pricing needs a rethink.'

Prime Minister David Cameron called for a rethink on the prices after a backlash from fans

Mr Cameron's officials spokesman said the PM backed Miss Grant and called for Nike to think again.

He told a regular Westminster media briefing: 'I'm sure all fans would welcome a rethink.'

The spokesman said it was 'clearly not' for the Government to set the price of football shirts.

But he added: 'It is a matter for the manufacturers and the FA, but does he agree with Helen Grant that £90 is a great deal of money for a replica shirt? Absolutely.

'Would a rethink by the manufacturer be welcomed by all fans? I'm sure that would be the case.'

Labour's shadow sports minister Clive Efford said the price of the shirts was 'disappointing'.

Justine Roberts, founder of popular parenting website Mumsnet, said: 'With the previous kit less than a year old and the away shirt worn only twice since then, it's not hard to see why some people might just think the FA are exploiting England fans by churning out yet another expensively priced version.

'When we asked our users about this this issue, an overwhelming majority thought football merchandise was a rip off.

'Instead of charging £60-plus for an 8-year-old’s kit, the FA could lead the way and produce a fairly priced kit so all England fans could afford to buy it and show support for the national team.'

The latest shirts - to be worn at the World Cup in Brazil this summer - are going on sale on April 3, less than a year after the previous ones were released.

Mark Perryman, a member of England Supporters Club, said: ‘They certainly don’t help themselves the fact two new shirts were introduced well before the 18 months.

‘They seem to have broken that rule. I thought it was a legal requirement.

‘The FA are in a difficult position, they can’t have a Nike home kit and Umbro away kit.

‘I suppose the FA’s excuse for releasing the kits so early is that it’s a World Cup year, but I’m sorry they should’ve thought about that when they signed the contract with Nike. It’s crazy.’

Not happy! Queens Park Rangers midfielder Joey Barton isn't best pleased at the price of the shirt

In the mid-2000s replica England shirts were on sale for £30 almost as soon as they were released.

The prices have since risen steeply, but they are dependent on results on the field. Following England’s 4-1 defeat to Germany in the 2010 World Cup the price for the replica shirts worn in that tournament plummeted.

Perryman, who has been a member of the ESC for 18 years, added: 'At the end of the day people will vote with their chests. If England are doing well, people will buy it.

‘If they lose to Italy in the World Cup it will drop to a fraction of that £90 price.’

Outrage from punters and those involved in the game poured out across social media websites.

Joey Barton said on Twitter: ‘£90 for the new England shirt is taking the mickey out of the fans. When will it stop?

‘I wonder what ‘magic’ technology it has this time that forces the price up but doesn’t actually work.

Coming thick and fast: These are the second new kits to have been released in the past year by England

‘Also [it’s] technology that the supporters don’t need. When will brands start to listen? Fans just want to feel a part of it. Part of the tribe.

‘[it’s] appalling, in my opinion. Football again allows commercialism to eat away at its soul. Something has got to give.

‘Its literally a white sports top with an England badge on. Costs about £2 pound tops to make in some sweatshop in the East.’

Stan Collymore added: ‘Nike have gone down American route. A “Match†shirt and “stadium†shirt, like NBA do. A joke, just make one please, £90 is a rip off.’

The FA are not allowed by UK and EU law to get involved with setting the price of the replica shirts.

A spokesman said: 'The FA is a not-for-profit Organisation that puts £100m back into the game every year.

'It is through relationships with partners such as Nike that we are able to maintain that level of investment in football.

'The FA's policy is to avoid any involvement with how its partners or licensees set their prices, so as to avoid any risk of or implications of price fixing.'

Nike have pointed out that the £60 replica kit is the one aimed at fans, whereas the £90 shirt is the exact one worn by the players with the full technological additions.

The prices are recommended to retailers who are able to set their own value.

A spokesman also confirmed that the kit cycle would return in future, saying: 'The previous kit marked the start of the partnership between England and The FA and the timing of the agreement put us in an unusual circumstance with regards to kit cycle.

'A normal kit cycle will resume with the new kits – the home kit will stay the same for two years, and the away for one year.'

  8. Notts County LFC vs Aston Villa LFC

    wlsmatchthreadfullncav.png

Notts County Ladies kick off their Continental Cup campaign on Wednesday night as they host WSL2 side Aston Villa Ladies.

Notts come into the game unbeaten, after three wins and a draw that have seen them top the league and progress through to the semi final of the FA Women’s Cup. Goals from Captain Sophie Bradley and striker Jess Clarke sealed County’s place in the semis, with a 2-0 victory over Portsmouth Ladies last time out.

In contrast, Aston Villa are still looking for their first victory, after three losses and a draw in their opening four games, including crashing out of the FAW Cup to Doncaster Rovers Belles.

The Lady Pies will be looking to the fire power of Jess Clarke and Dunia Susi, who have got six goals between them, in the first four games, Jess on a run of four goals in the last three games. Despite scoring the first goal on Sunday, Sophie Bradley’s attenttions will focus at the other end of the pitch, the home side looking to keep their impressive defensive record going with County conceding only two goals in the four games.

  9. I don't want to step on @weymouthPIE toes but is anyone interested in a playoff prediction league? Just for fun and to keep us going before the World Cup starts. Same rules as the current prediction league.

Notts County's Jack Grealish nominated for League One award

JACK Grealish has been given the perfect boost ahead of Notts County's do-or-die clash at Oldham Athletic, having been nominated for the League One Player of the Month award for April.

The on-loan Aston Villa winger will today be working hard on the training ground as the Magpies prepare to face the Latics in their last game of the season on Saturday, knowing a draw will ensure their survival in the division.

And the 18-year-old will no doubt have an extra spring in his step, after having his performances recognised.

Grealish did not add to his tally of five goals last month, but he still produced some dazzling displays in black-and-white stripes to help Notts claim three huge victories against Port Vale, Crawley and Swindon that have put the club on the brink of safety when they looked doomed to relegation only a few weeks ago.

  11. Jess Clarke: Notts County Ladies aiming high in league and cup
Women's Super League: Notts County v Arsenal
    • Venue: Meadow Lane
    • Date: Wednesday, 16 April
    • Kick-off: 19:30 BST

Coverage: Live commentary on BBC Radio 5 live sports extra from 18:30 BST

Winger Jess Clarke says Notts County Ladies have high ambitions for their maiden season at Meadow Lane.

The Magpies host Arsenal on Wednesday in their first Women's Super League match since controversially relocating from Lincoln.

    Stoney reunion at Notts
    _74243456_pa-19428454.jpg

England captain Casey Stoney rejoined Arsenal in January after three years with Lincoln.

Notts got off to a winning start at the ground, beating Coventry City in the FA Women's Cup fifth round on Sunday.

"Whether in the league or cup, I don't think anything is out of reach," Clarke told BBC East Midlands Today.

"We have to set the bar high and aim for that. A lot of hard work and preparation has gone on behind the scenes - we have to believe and trust that what we do on the training pitch and implement that on the game."

As Lincoln Ladies last term, the club finished runners-up to Arsenal in the Continental Cup and sixth in the league.

Manager Rick Passmoor is looking for more composure from his team after marking their relocation and rebrand as Notts County with a battling display against Coventry to set up a last-eight cup tie at Portsmouth.

"The players were a bit anxious and nervous, so it was good to get 90 minutes under their belt, to play on Meadow Lane and to play for this historic club," he said.

"It's a fresh start, new WSL season and franchise and the players want to be here at Notts County.

"They are playing for the badge, not the name on their back.

"They have got to ensure that they are nice and composed and relaxed come game day.

"It will be a completely different mindset against Arsenal, we will play well and it will be a super game."

Shaun Derry wants Notts County to finish 'Great Escape' with a bang

SHAUN Derry wants Notts County to finish their 'Great Escape' with a bang as he vowed not to play for the draw which will guarantee their survival.

The Magpies boss is bracing his team for one of the club's biggest matches in their recent history when they travel to Oldham on Saturday.

Notts need just a point at Boundary Park to retain their League One status, which could have led Derry to deploy defensive tactics for the showdown.

But the Magpies chief says that's not in his nature and has made it clear that he wants to finish one of the unlikeliest escape acts in style.

"I don't want us to play for the draw, I want to go and win the game instead," said Derry. "I've made that clear and with the form that we are in I certainly feel we can do it as well.

"Naturally we will show Oldham the utmost respect, of course we will.

"Fair credit to them and Lee Johnson because he has done a great job.

"But it's not about them. I am only concentrating on us and I really want all three points.

"And if we stay up, I know it will be my greatest achievement.

"I now appreciate all those times I knocked on the manager's door when I was a player and caused havoc, I now know there are two sides to the story."

Ticket sales for Notts' date with destiny were continuing to soar yesterday with the club having already sold their initial allocation of 3,000.

A further 1,000 were given to the Magpies and a sell-out is expected which will give the players an army of support.

It's one of the biggest followings the club has taken to a league fixture since playing Lincoln City in 1998 in a Division Three promotion clash.

The club's marketing manager Damian Irvine says the atmosphere promises to be something special.

"The level of support we will be taking is absolutely phenomenal," he said.

"To have sold our initial allocation of 3,000 so quickly just goes to show what this club is all about.

  14. If you park in or around London and leave any wheels on the pavement area you will be liable to a fixed parking penalty. This picture  is what the traffic warden took of my car when I was parked in Ruislip, it cost me £110 or £55 if I pay within two weeks.

    Be warned!

  15. Well Done to Haydn Hollis who claimed the NCFCOSA's Young Player of the Season.

Yesterday fans and members of the NCFCOSA attended the Young Player of the Season Award Evening. The inaugural award for the best under-21 player who has come through Notts’ academy as a scholar was scooped up by Hayden Hollis. Fellow nominees Greg Tempest, Curtis Thompson, Fabian Spiess, and Kyle Dixon also attended, along with other academy players, and youth team coaches Dan Leivers and Anny Ninje.

Everyone present felt privileged to hear First Team coach/manager Shaun Derry lay out his plans for the integration of young players into the first team squad and give a frank and honest appraisal of the players coming through the system. We were left in no doubt that Notts have an exciting time ahead.

  16. Up the M1 & M62. Iff you are driving and see fellow pies give them a honk, I most certainly will.

  17. Nothing beats seeing a pub full of NCFC fans, however when it's the pub which a former legendary manager used to frequent and is honoured - Well the sense of pride and respect sort combined to make it all that more special. The walk just as impressive, as our fans took to walking all the way from the Cross Keys pub all the way to Meadow Lane!

Personally I had been looking forward to it for awhile, I had collected sponsorship from day one and as some are aware I dislocated my left knee not long after.

With my right knee being such a problem and with the left going, I was advised by medial staff (physio and a specialist) not to do the walk. However, anyone who knows me will tell you I am stubborn but I wanted to do the walk for two reasons. 1) I wanted to help raise funds for the statue 2) I wanted to test myself.

Over 70 fans made the walk, which is very impressive!

For me there was no issue's whatsoever, I could feel my right knee and after the game I was walking funny but so proud to have walked it.

    Well Done to everyone involved!!

  18. I don't want to be negative but I am a bit worried about Saturday.

Both Crewe and Tranmere are at home we are not brilliant away. It is not beyond the bounds of possibility that they both win and we lose in which case we would go down. I just hope that the players aren't thinking that the job is done and make that last push for a result at Oldham. It will be very nervy to say the least, please tell me I am being paranoid and it will all end happily.

  19. Been to get 4 this morning. Nearly 2000 sold. Should be a sellout. I'm leaving straight from work at 11.00. Only just over 2 hours, so should be ok.

  20. You might have seen Gladbach's 1-0 win at Schalke yesterday on TV. What has come to light today in the statistics is that they only committed 1 foul in the whole 90 minutes. The previous Bundesliga record low was 6 apparently.

Does anyone know of any team that committed no fouls at all?

  24. Portsmouth FCL vs Notts County LFC

    wlsmatchthreadfullpfcnc.png

Notts County travel south to face Portsmouth Ladies as both sides battle it out in the quarter final of the FA Women's Cup.

With the lucrative prize of a place in the semi final beckoning, both teams will be keen to come out with a victory, with the winner facing the victor of the Merseyside derby between Liverpool and Everton.

Portsmouth are the only team left in the competition to not play in either the Women’s Super League 1 or 2 and Notts will go into the game clear favourites, as they sit top of the tree in England, currently leading WSL1.

Notts County progressed through to the quarter final with victory over Southern Premier side Coventry City Ladies, who sit one place ahead of Sunday’s opponents Portsmouth. Pompey have had to beat four teams to reach the quarter final, scoring 12 in the process, including a 2-1 victory over WSL2 side Durham Women in the 5th Round.

Notts County continue to be without long term absentee Ellen White, who picked up an injury against Durham in pre-season, but still have the fire power of Jess Clarke and Dunia Susi who have netted five between them in the season’s first three games. Portsmouth aren’t shy of goals either, Lucy Quinn netting 18 goals in 24 appearances, with Gemma-Louise Hillier chipping in with 13 goals in 25 appearances.
