  1. The last time we all holidayed at Skegness, pre covid, some toilets were charging 20p.I can remember a holiday at Blackpool in the 50's my grandad asking if anyone in our group had a penny as he had none in his change..For years we always made sure we had a few pennies in our pockets 'just in case' Thanks to inflation it looks like we'll soon need to rob a bank to visit a convenience. @Fan of Big Tone, groats were just a little before my time, but I do remember ha'pennys, farthings, the sixpenny bit(tanner), the twelve edged threepenny bit and even the silver threepenny bits.

  2. In the olden days when @super_ram and myself were alive, it used to cost one penny to use a public toilet, in fact @super_ram can probably remember when it was a groat! This last week whilst on holiday in Scarborough me and my wife wanted to use the toilet and it was 40p each! That’s 8 shilling to us old farts.

  3. It would be lovely if everyone who reads this could take a moment to post a comment, even if it’s just a brief paragraph. I’m curious to know if anyone got up to anything exciting during the close season and if people are starting to look ahead to the new campaign. There’s a lot of excitement surrounding our return to the EFL, which I’m determined to enjoy no matter what happens. I’ll be happy just to be back watching teams like Tranmere Rovers, Bradford City, and Walsall. During the close season, I didn’t do anything particularly special, but it did seem to drag on at the time. Now that we’re in pre-season, everything has accelerated.

  5. It’s inflation for you all. I had no problem paying 20p to use public toilets that are well-maintained and clean. I think it’s a good incentive to keep idiots from making them a total mess. Correction, I say I never had a problem, but actually, there were times when I just didn’t have 20p on me, which is quite frustrating. You dig deep in your pockets, busting to go, and thankfully find one. Now, you have to dig deeper to find two if you’re lucky. They want you to say that 50p would be easier, then before you know it, it will be 50p for a wee and £1 for the other. ????

  6. I remember when public toilets were free and didn’t cost anything to use. I think charging 40p is daylight robbery. It’s almost like a convenience tax.

  7. I bounce around the house, awaiting release back to football. I find the close season to be really boring and uneventful. I very much look forward to the beginning of pre-season, the signings, but not so much the rumours as they tend to always be made up. I mean, out of all the reports linked to us, none of them were correct to my knowledge. However, I am looking forward to the beginning of the season.

  8. i think its 40p everywhere in skegness that is a public service, i know the toilets on the beach front in the main part of skegness, the ones at the side of the shopping centre and the ones across from the train station are. its one way to make money for the local authority because lets face it most dont keep the cleaning to a high standard that pubs, restaurants etc are. the amount of paying people, must see it being profitable over the cost of cleaning. it does not even deter those scruffy people from leaving a mess. ????

  9. It’s great to hear that the CEO has been appointed. It seems like the Reedtz brothers have made a careful decision, and I believe that Joe Palmer’s mix of experience will be beneficial. I hope he enjoys his role at Notts, as it is a very important one, and I am confident that he will connect with fans in the same way that Jason Turner did. I wish him all the best in his new role.

  10. I’ve spent the close season mainly taking my wife to various hospital and doctors appointments which is not quite the same as the holiday in Corfu we had planned. However we’ve had some nice days out and just got back from a short holiday in Yorkshire. Really looking forward to the new season back in the league it’s been a long time, I’m hoping to get to as many home matches as I can with at least one of my grandsons.

  11. It seems that he has a good level of experience and brings a fresh mindset, picking up where Jason Turner sadly left off before his passing. I hope that Joe Palmer takes the time to connect with the fans and get to know the community, as this would benefit him in settling into the club. With the appointment of a CEO, the club is now fully prepared for the League Two season.

  12. It’s nice to have the position sorted and a person appointed; the article says a lot. Maybe the club is planning to release an interview with the new CEO or is trying to allow him to settle in without being bothered. I am just happy it’s sorted now.

  13. I’m pleased that the club has appointed a new CEO. Hopefully, things around the club, such as the ticket office, will start to improve again. I’ve heard many complaints about misinformation being given out and poor service.

  14. It’s good to see that the new CEO has finally been appointed. I did wonder if one would be found before the season started. He sounds like a credible candidate. The article reads well, and I hope he continues to invest time in listening to fans. It seems like the club is going to tease his appearance, just like they did with the shirts. ????

  15. Currently, I'm doing overtime at work. Entering the 3rd week in a row of doing overtime and I'll admit it's kinda taking its toll now but after next week is done, I'm off for 2 weeks so I'll get time to recover. Other than that, haven't really done much during the close season. I'm hoping to get to more Notts games this season. Haven't been able to attend many games in previous years due to living in Coalville. Until recently, the buses didn't run from Nottingham to Coalville after 4.30 which means that I'd practical have to miss the second half. But now they're on till 5.35 so it gives me plenty of time. I only managed the 2 games last season and the friendly against Forest last weekend. Once you get to a certain point in thec close season and kits start getting released, players arrive in, friendlies take place you just want the season to start. However, when there's football on, like at the minute the Women's World Cup, it makes it that bit easier to cope with a close season.

  16. I look forward to the break from football, but after a few weeks, I start to crave the distraction. I haven’t been up to much, just work and reading about Notts. The pre-season is always a good time to gauge how other fans feel. Football provides a break from the working week, a sense of release, and something to look forward to.

  17. I have caught the highlights of some of the games so far, but no full matches. I want to try to catch a few of England’s games. From what I have seen so far, I think it has been a bit subpar. England were lucky to get the VAR decision and then the retaken penalty, as without the technology it might have ended differently.

  18. It’s just crazy that this can happen, not only because it could have been a terrorist attack, but also due to the risks involved for people.

  19. the media team probably did not get chance to take a photo of him, although its good to know the club does have a ceo to help the brothers now. i am hoping that we can now focus on keeping the staff at notts maintained like the playing squad, because we have lost so many staff members who have moved on and i think part of it is due to the high demand in them doing more than just one role at the club. its always the good ones that leave, like alice kellett. its very positive news though and i hope he enjoys the role.

  20. not so far, but i will. i did not realise it was a kick off time before 12pm. it will make it hard to watch due to work, but i can check on the scores.

  21. i read a news report that mentioned it was a gang? i am not sure how this comes about but i hope they are charged with something. its bizarre and dangerous.

  22. Yes just ended.Difficult game against Haiti but 1- 0 Lionesses victory thanks to a twice taken , VAR awarded, penalty.
    3 points
  23. I will be following the Lionesses. Due to work and the times the games start, I can't catch many games but will be able to catch today's game against Haiti and the game against China. The Denmark game I'll probably just listen to on the radio at work. Will also try and catch some of the other games. Currently got the Zambia v Japan game on.

  24. I like the mix of experience that he has, the club is crying out for stability within the departments. The issue with the ticket office is new staff; the club also appointed a new ticket office manager who will be getting used to life at the club. It is frustrating when they don’t answer the phone, but the CEO will have various more important things to focus on at first. Welcome to Meadow Lane, Joe Palmer.

  25. They appear happy, and I have a feeling that one of them may have requested the change. I am not certain why; perhaps John Bostock previously had the number? It could also be that the club requested the switch. Regardless, it is not a major issue.
    3 points
  26. It makes sense to switch John Bostock, but I would have thought it could have been done before the first announcement of the squad numbers.

  29. Unisex toilets are weird; I hate those temporary ones. I prefer to find gender-based toilets if I can help it, but I have never heard of anyone sitting outside them with a collection. I wonder if the old lady was helping in an official capacity? France is a weird nation; after all, they eat frog legs. It’s a beautiful country but still very weird. I wouldn’t pay 40p for a public toilet; they are public after all and come out of our taxes.
    2 points
  30. In France they have a little old lady who sits with a dish collecting money, I guess she keeps the toilet clean and takes the money as payment, I never knew how much to put in the dish so invariably paid a euro for a pee. Toilets there are usually unisex too, weird.

  31. with us making the playoff final, it feels like the close season just merged with the start of the pre season. there was only a few weeks between and during that point the players were on holiday. even with my work, i look forward to having talking points and seeing what is happening. now we are in the pre season, i am more excited than ever. i am very much looking forward to sutton away.

  32. Boston United gave Notts a better game, but it was one of those pre-season friendlies that neither team really got into. I don’t think the rain helped the mood, but it was good to see Cedwyn Scott score.

  33. This is crazy! Thank goodness nobody was injured or hurt during this. I never would have imagined this happening within the United Kingdom, not even at that level.

  34. Now that it has been confirmed, I look forward to reading his communications with us, and I hope they will be as frequent as those of Jason Turner. It may take a few months before we hear anything, but it is something that provides a good insight into the club. Welcome to Meadow Lane, Joe Palmer.

  35. I haven’t watched it and I most likely won’t. I don’t find it particularly interesting. I don’t watch much football outside of Notts, so it’s not entirely due to the standard of the women’s game, but more because of time constraints and other priorities. I hope England does well, but I doubt I’ll watch many games.

  36. https://www.nottscountyfc.co.uk/news/2023/july/report-boston-a-220723/ A difficult afternoon in constant rain. Notts dominated possession, probably on at least 80/20 ratio. However without Ruben, that defence splitting pass was just not there today

  37. in a traditional numbering system it makes sense, john bostock is highly likely to feature a lot more than geraldo bajrami. other than that it makes little interest because it does make much difference in modern football.

  38. It will be an excellent opportunity for the club to have a good run out against Boston United, who have a lovely new stadium. This match will provide a chance to see how the club compares against a team with a few familiar faces. I believe that Boston will give Notts the most significant challenge out of all the away pre-season friendlies. However, it’s important to remember that this is just an insight for the coaching team. I am hoping that Boston will try to park the bus, so we can finally see if we are creative enough to break down these types of teams without losing our composure. As for the squad, I am sure that Luke Williams has his team in mind. I agree with those who have expressed their desire for the youngsters to get a chance. I suspect that they will until the start of the season.

  39. I am a bit unsure why it has happened or even been announced; it could simply have been mentioned eventually. I see the insertion of information about getting names on the back, but I am not sure it’s appropriate enough for that to be slipped in for the sake of selling a few names.

  40. Boston United have made some good signings, including a few former Notts players. This may motivate them to raise their game and show Notts what they’re missing or that they’re good players. Jimmy Knowles will pose more of a threat than any of the away friendlies so far, with his pace and direct approach requiring us to be alert and focused. It should prove to be a better game.
    2 points
  41. It’s going to be a good test to see Notts playing Boston United. I hope that Luke Williams continues to give some of the youngsters game time. It’s always exciting to see new talent on the pitch. I’m also hoping that Sam Slocombe is close to making a return. Fitness is key in these pre-season games, and it will be a good run out for the team. Fingers crossed for a great match!

  42. If you attend this friendly, please report back with your thoughts on the trialists and in general. I don’t mind what Luke Williams decides to do, but with players getting more minutes, it looks as if he’s pushing for his first team to gain the match fitness we need for the Sutton game

  43. I recorded the match and managed to avoid the result so I sort of watched it live, I thought it was a good game and but for some poor finishing it could have been quite high scoring. Both teams had good chances and the goalkeepers did well.

  44. haiti had some good chances but their finishing was dire, there was two moments a better team would have punished england. all the effort to split the defence and a very weak shot at the end. it was not the best of games though.

  45. I also think that Michael Doyle’s decision to focus on youth football is a good one. It could be an excellent opportunity for him to get his career back on track.

  46. Good, we need to be filing spaces with young players eventually. If they can't come in or get chance, then I wonder when we will ever get our own players involved.
    1 point
  47. I am 13, I would never abuse a player verbally. I get fed up of seeing older fans act so immature and childish. I try not to listen to them, I hope the players don't listen too.
    1 point
  48. Great news to see the youngsters sign up! Does the scholarship mean that Notts gets aid with paying their wages, or is this just the term for players who aren’t quite first-year pros? I find the changes in wording difficult to keep up with. It’s great news though!
    1 point
  49. Callum McGregor is a great player, when he retires he should be amongst their legends. He's helped them in Europe and even assisted the Scottish national team with their improvements on the field. He was great for Notts!
