A very quick and simple question.

As Jodi Jones bulked up ?

I don't know if other PON Members have noticed but it seems to me, that Jodi Jones appears much bigger than he did last season. It Strikes me he's put on more bulk this year, by that I mean (to me any way) he seems bigger and more muscular in his appearance. His face seems fuller so as he decided to Bulk up to help more with his defensive duties and make it harder for opposition players to bundle him off the Ball? Or Is It Just Me?

  • You certainly raise a few good points @Chris. I also noticed that in the photo stills of Jodi his shirt does seem to hang more loosely on him. And in reference to his last interview he did say he'd been hitting the Gym as I recall, however I just assumed that would be part of his daily training regime anyway. Jodi's start to the season as been excellent and if he continues in that vein expect a Lot of clubs, higher up the Football Pyramid come sniffing around the Lane come January.

Interesting statistics regarding the league record of Notts for their last eleven league matches.

Just two losses in 11 with 21 points in total gained.

Is Stuart turning things around & winning over his doubters.

Thoughts?

  • The start of his reign was poor, but anyone who believes it would have been different under Luke Williams is mistaken. I loved our time with Williams in charge of Notts. He spoke so well, but defensively he never had the solutions.

I don’t want to sound like I outright blame Williams. I am just trying to make the case and point that I doubt he would have managed to change the downward fall in performances our players took. Also, I doubt defensively much would have changed now. Williams clearly got on well with certain players and I think he had a sentimental approach to retaining players and who played.

Stuart Maynard deserves much of the praise for where we are now. I don’t see why anyone would have doubts. The squad hasn’t just turned it around. Neither is it solely down to the club’s recruitment. I hope more come on board and get behind Maynard. He’s working hard and the lads seem just as fired up now as they ever did under Williams.

Look, both coaches are good in their own right. Williams will be forever remembered as the man who restored our club’s pride and gave us an amazing season and a decent return to the EFL. But it’s Maynard’s time now. If you want the club to succeed and get back up the leagues, support him like you would the club. Keep the negative thoughts to a minimum until it’s valid. It never was last season, because the issue needed time and new players to turn around. We are seeing that now, I feel.

The really annoying "fans" who are against Stuart Maynard will probably say it's still early days or only credit the squad. However, I think those who were unsure are now starting to come around, if they haven't already. I'm pleased for Maynard, he’s making the right decisions. Others have mentioned it before, but he’s learning professional football as he goes, and it’s good to see it paying off, especially when he could have easily been sacked.

We are back for another round of MAGnets! This time, we will be playing Bromley FC at Hayes Lane on the 14th of September 2024.

The player I will start this round with might not have been the best technically, but he was a top person off the field and always had a smile on his face. He currently plays for Rochdale, but before he played for Notts, he played for Bromley. It's none other than Tobi Adebayo-Rowling.

Let's stick to naming one at a time for now, please. So, we can see how many members can contribute to this. :)

Here is the match discussion too.
Will be added once live.

Please feel free to join in, but let's stick with one guess to start things off. This might be a harder round!

What makes a good Striker?

It goes without saying that a good striker needs to have a combination of technical & physical skills, as well as tactical awareness.

They also need to be able to read the game & make quick decisions under pressure. They need to have the ability of being in the right place at the right time.

They need to be fit, strong & have plenty of energy to run into space & create space for others.

A good striker should be able to link up well with other teammates, hold up the ball & maintain possession.

Strikers should have good ball striking abilities & be good in the air. They should also be able to help in defence when required.

A striker can have all these attributes, but they also need teammates that can work with them well & supply them with good service & plenty of goalscoring opportunities.

For example, McGoldrick & Jatta have both had good starts to the season. They both have many of those attributes I have described, but they do need to have good service too.

And they both need to be able to fit into the Notts style of play comfortably, which they are clearly doing

The point I'm trying to make is that every player in a good team has their role to play. If all the players are on the same wavelength, the strikers will get plenty of opportunities to score plenty of goals.

Strikers just need to have those good attributes to play their part in the side & to be able to take those opportunities when they come

After all, it's a team game.

  • It’s all about the differences and how each striker understands the game. You have strikers like Lee Hughes, who knows where to be when play opens up, being a natural goalscorer who can read the game remarkably well. You have more traditional finishers, like Macaulay Langstaff, who puts hard work into his play, chasing every opportunity and pouncing on mistakes. Again, he has a good level of understanding of how the play might open up, and his positional play here at Notts was exceptional.

You have finishers like Alan Shearer, who can do everything and strike the ball from distance without relying so much on pace. I think what makes a good striker is being able to see how play will unfold, being in the right place at the right time, having natural finishing qualities, not being downhearted about missed chances, and having the ability to hold off the opposition to get an effort away. Pace is useful, but it’s all about the technical ability to move with the play and finish when presented with a chance.

a good striker needs to have a sharp eye for goal and read the game well. they must be quick on their feet with good ball control. positioning is key, knowing where to be to receive the ball and create chances. a good striker should have a powerful and accurate shot, able to finish with both feet and their head. they need to be strong to hold off defenders and have the stamina to keep pressing and making runs. teamwork is crucial, linking up well with midfielders and wingers. mental toughness is important, staying focused under pressure and having the confidence to take chances. overall, a good striker combines skill, physical ability, and a strong mentality to score goals.

I think you need to have hunger and self-drive. Missing chances can really affect your morale, but when you believe in yourself and understand that working hard will get you chances, it makes a big difference. The ability to finish, along with other important attributes, can really push you forward.

Technically, movement and positioning are two different aspects that often get mistaken for the same thing. You need to make good movements, but positioning is what can give you that extra yard advantage over defenders. Understanding the game’s flow is key to being successful. Sometimes, it just helps to have a knack for being in the right place.

I have seen players who had everything you would think they needed, yet barely made an impact as a striker.

Good morning, it’s a wet start to the week here, hopefully it’ll brighten up later.

Our holiday is fast approaching, only another week and a bit so we are busy making sure we’ve got all the correct documents and know everything we need to know before we go.

Apart from that we need to go for a walk this afternoon to keep our fitness levels up.

Whats everyone else doing today?

Whole milk doesn't taste right to me, I don't like it.

Your right Chris, whole milk is not whole milk at all. It has nearly all the cream taken out of it.

Skimmed milk is more like coloured water than milk.

I call it whole milk, but full fat doesn’t bother me. Some have too much time on their hands to find faults with words. Just let it pass because the message should be solely about it being healthy. Milk was never intended to be drunk by us, but we do, and the purpose it gave in the beginning has been replaced by other means. It was vital once upon a time; it no longer is, but it tastes great with cereals.

Very Sad News that's come out from Hollywood, Actor James Earl Jones as Passed  Away. The Actor with perhaps the Most Iconic and recognizable voice died four days ago. Paid very little for his voice work in the first Star Wars Film and not acknowledged in the films credits, James' voice became forever associated with Sci Fi 's  most Famous and Greatest Villain of all time. I saw James in many different roles over the years, in the first Conan film the TV series Roots and a couple of guest spots in American sit coms Frasier and The Big Bang Theory to name just a few. I believe both James's parents were deaf and he didn't learn to speak until he was 5 years old (I stand to be corrected).

R.I.P Lord Vader. Now As One With The Force.

Greeting my fellow PON Members, I don't know if you remember me, it's the Old Wheelbarrow Repairman. I've not been on the site for awhile and if you're interested here's why. Are we all sitting comfortably? The I'll begin Once upon a time in a Galaxy Far Far Away, no hold on I can't use that. Let me see ah yes well. A few weeks ago I tired to get onto the site to air some of my views only to find I was unable to do so, after several attempts which ended in failure I decided to leave things and come back to the site the following day, and much to my surprise not only couldn't I get onto the PON Site I couldn't get onto the internet at all. After trying everything still nothing and as the family computer whiz Kid (my eldest son was on holiday) we had to await his return. When he finally got back from his fortnight of Fun and Games, he attempted to put things right only to finally come to the conclusion the old Laptop was Fu****. So a new one was ordered and it finally came yesterday and he set everything up but I still couldn't get back on PON anyway after lots of backward and forwarding and after some hard work by @Chris I've managed to make my return. Thanks Chris your a Star.

There was a second reason why I've not been on before, now what was it? Oh Yeah I DIED.

I wont bore you with the details ( because I don't remember much of it). I went to the QMC in Nottingham with a pain in my left shoulder and down and around my left shoulder blade. Once in hospital I suffered a New Atrial fibrillation,  and a subclinical hyperthyroidism    which means my Heart Stopped. A CPR Team brought me back after around 15 minutes. According to my youngest Son who had accompanied me to the hospital. I was transferred ( No fee was involved) from the QMC to the Cardiac Unit at Nottingham City hospital, after several days being hooked up to a machine numerous Blood Tests and blood pressure tests, along with 7 tablets to take on a Daily basis I was allowed home. I am now slowly on the mend and was assured by a Doctor that I am allowed to go back down the Lane to shout and encourage the Mighty Magpies onto Great Things and to also question the Referee's parentage.

So in typical Monty Python Fashion- I WAS DEAD. BUT I GOT BETTER.

  • @Chris

To be honest my friend when I was gone it just felt like I was asleep I felt incredibly happy, euphoric, there was No pain just a feeling of utter contentment. I didn't see anyone one of my family who had passed telling me to go back, nor did I feel I was floating looking down on my physical body, or anything which people who have the experience of dieing and then coming back. There was a Bright white light but that was probably the large lights reflecting on  white ceiling of the cubicle I was in, because my Son told me I had my eyes open.

What I don't remember is what the CPR Team did for me, if they got the paddles out or if they thumped me on the Chest to get my heart going again, I knew nothing of the physical world around me. From the time I collapsed till the time I came back seemed to me only mere seconds, one moment I was enjoying, what seemed to me a Wonderful Dream and the next there was this annoying Sod poking his finger into the side of my neck calling my name. Then I was back in the land of the living and all my senses came back to me and it was just like I'd woken up from some Fantastic Dream.

Frightening? Honestly No not for me at that time, however it was so much different for my Son. I wont record his feelings here. Now I don't know how I feel about the whole thing it was if it happened to somebody else, the only worry is sometimes I get a  slight side effect from one of the Drugs I'm taking and I think it's happening again, then I calm down and realize there are no other symptoms and my panic goes away.

We all have an idea of our favourite all time great Notts player that we have seen or heard of.

But what would be your ultimate Notts team if you could choose your best players either from the players you saw, or who you heard of and read about?

I'm sure we will have our favourites. There are so many to choose from, and we will all have our own ideas of which Notts  players to put in that team.

So I will allow eleven players and one substitute.

You can have any formation you like so long as the side is balanced. Good luck.

kasper, sheehan (dl), edwards (cb) thompson (cb), dumbuya (dr), j hughes (ml), bishop (dm) m palmer (cm) roberts (mr) l hughes (st) langstaff (st)

    4-3-3 Formation

    GK: Steve Cherry

    RB: Steve Finnan
    CB: Michael Johnson
    CB: Shaun Murphy
    LB: Ian Baraclough

    CM: Gary Mills
    CM: Phil Turner
    CM: Neal Bishop

    RW: Paul Heffernan
    LW: Enzio Boldewijn
    ST: Tony Hateley

I’ve tried to pick some players who aren’t the usual choices. I thought about their height, speed, and skills. This might not be the most logical or memorable group of players, but I believe they would win games if they were in their prime and playing for Notts County.

                                         GK
                             Kasper Schmicheal

Steve Finnan Mike Edwards Gary Liddle Alan Sheehan

                               Ian Baraclough

        Phil Turner                                    Paul Devlin

Danny Allsopp    Lee Hughes    Gary McSwegan

    Formation: 4-3-3

I really wanted to have three strikers, these are all players I have seen play for Notts.

Luke Garrard returns to Boreham Wood as Team Manager after just 5 months away.

  • To be fair to them Boreham Wood massively underachieved last season, I don’t think anyone would’ve predicted they’d get relegated especially after they were just minutes away from getting to a play-off final the season before ????

I wonder if Luke Garrard thought he would’ve got another job in the NL over the summer. He’s been at Boreham Wood for so long I kind of think a change wouldn’t have been a bad thing. Maybe he’s looked back on the relegation and wants to make up for it by getting them promoted again. It’ll be interesting to see how it turns out for him second time around.

I think realistically, they have always been a mid-table National League team.

Their success seemed a bit of an overachievement, but their relegation was them underperforming. I don't think they strengthened themselves all that well compared to other teams and ended up in very poor form. I wonder if their fans have any involvement with this? If they wanted him back, then it would make a bit more sense, but I can't imagine it was easy discussions at first.

What’s all this about?

  • I am happy, well more than happy. Delighted and over the moon doesn’t really do it. Jodi Jones’s extension gives us peace of mind. I would rather have players under contract than allowing them to wind down. Also, the fact he feels he has something to repay us for, despite all he has done, shows his quality off the pitch.

He could see out his contract, then review all the offers that come in. If a Championship team did, offering him a better payday, how do we compete with that? We have to get our better players extending their contracts where we can. I don’t care if we sell him at the end of this season, provided we have seen his magic and he’s helped us on the pitch. Sure, I would be sad to see him go, but it beats losing talent on a free.

You can’t underestimate the importance of this news, and you can’t downplay it either. He’s ours until a bid comes in, and the contract gives us more time. If he leaves during that time, it will be our decision. As for the positivity, just read or listen to what Jodi has said about his choice. If you ever needed proof that someone is committed to Notts, he’s the one. He wants to improve, but with us. We should be delighted. I wanted to jump around like a madman, but that’s not a good idea, so I just stuck to doing fist bumps! I understand some caution, but Macca is different. Jodi Jones reached the Championship with Coventry City, and without his injuries, I doubt they’d have let him go. Macca spent a long time in the National League, so you can’t blame him for wanting to test himself. Jodi had a short stint in the National League, and he knows League Two and League One well. He knows he’s happy here, it’s great news!

Has anyone heard from @AmericanPie ?

I hope he’s ok, I’ve not seen him post for a while.

If you are still around and reading this we miss you mate.

At last. Some movement on these 115 charges that Man City have to answer to.

On 7 September 1953, Nikita Khrushchev was elected first secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. Khrushchev became better known as the initiator of the Cuban missile crisis, one of the biggest gambles in history that took the world to the brink of nuclear war. If you fancy a gamble with slightly lower stakes, we have some prediction league fixtures coming up. These all kick off at 3pm on Saturday, and remember your joker!

Barnsley v Bristol Rovers

Charlton Athletic v Rotherham United

Cheltenham Town v Harrogate Town

Colchester United v Bromley

Doncaster Rovers v Gillingham

Braintree Town v Woking

  • It's just excellent! There’s something truly special about being part of the Notts County family. The blend of old-school charm and new ideas at Meadow Lane creates a unique atmosphere that’s hard to find elsewhere. The stewards are friendly, and the fans genuinely care about each other. I remember my first game; I felt welcomed right away. It’s a place where generations come together, sharing stories and cheers. The nostalgia of the terraces mixed with the modern comforts makes every matchday a memorable experience. I hope the club continues to grow and thrive while keeping that community spirit alive.

its a good read, i like that people are seeing meadow lane as a good place to go. it shows floating and casual fans that there is more than just the football being played but the social side to it.

It’s a very good read, with excellent pictures of Meadow Lane. The recent match was brilliant! Seeing David McGoldrick score was a highlight, especially since he came through our youth system. It’s moments like these that remind you why you support this club. The crowd was electric, and the camaraderie among fans just made it all the more enjoyable. I can’t wait for the next game!

Goalkeeper Alex Bass says being made to feel at home at Notts County after years on...

  • I agree @Chris Alex Bass talked about Stuart having faith in him.

Having the faith and confidence from any gaffer makes all the difference in the mentality of a player.

I think Aidan Stone still has something to offer Notts if given the chance.

Bear in mind there would be a brand new defensive unit in front of him now, if he had the chance to deputise for Bass.

One more thing. Managers rarely substitute Keepers for tactical reasons.

Is it time that Clubs like Notts started to do that to give substitute keepers game time?

He’s a top keeper for sure. I don’t believe he’s of League Two standard, so if we do gain promotion whilst he’s at the club, I don’t think it would be a position we would need to replace. It’s good to have so much faith in the keeper, as I don’t worry when teams have chances against him. It has always been a nervous aspect in recent seasons to worry about conceding.

its good hes enjoying life at meadow lane and notts does seem like a good fit, he could still be at a team like afc wimbledon and being loaned out. hes now a notts player and we want him as much as he wants to be here. i love his attitude towards not conceding goals.

Congratulations @BromPie on becoming a Grand Master on the PON community.

  • Surely, they undergo thorough checks? I would assume the cricketer knew, so surely it would be a form of cheating? I am not sure how 12 points is a suitable punishment. Cricket is a weird sport, where cheaters don't seem to be held accountable like other sports do. I thought it was considered 'the gentleman's game', with a lot of sportsmanship? It seems lost these days.

As someone with zero interest in cricket, I hear and read so many unsporting things.

    @Chris

I agree, Players should be checking their own equipment to ensure compliance.

There is a gauge that the bat has to pass through to ensure it's not over permitted width.

Just a very small increase in thickness, just a millimetre or two, can make all the difference to a professional.

To be honest, the match should have been declared at least a draw with a further 8 points awarded to Notts, or even a win for Notts, with 16 points awarded or the match replayed.
