Matty Platt, Notts County’s 27-year-old central defender, was thrilled after his side’s hard-fought 1-0 victory over AFC Wimbledon at Meadow Lane. Not only did Platt’s header secure the win, but it also ended the club’s two-match winless streak at home, delivering both a crucial three points and a clean sheet. Speaking after the game, Platt expressed his joy at what he described as the perfect outcome. "Yes it is, it was a tough game to be fair today. I think Wimbledon came and made it difficult for us at times, especially in the first half," he noted. Notts County had been eager to avoid conceding the first goal again, particularly after their previous home results followed a similar pattern. Platt acknowledged that their first-half performance was far from ideal but emphasised the importance of remaining defensively solid during periods when they weren't at their best. "At times in the first half we weren't at our best, but I think especially us at the back, we were thinking, just keep it tight, keep it at 0-0," he explained, adding, "and then we know at some point things are going to change and we're going to grow into the game." The first half, characterised by a lack of clear-cut opportunities for both sides, was described by Platt as a "slow burner." He stressed the team’s focus on maintaining their defensive shape during such a tense period, knowing that they would eventually find their rhythm. "We just didn't want to concede any sloppy goals in that first half because when the game is probably not, as you say, free-flowing, there's not many chances, you just want to keep it tight," he said. The match's pivotal moment came in the 67th minute when Platt rose to meet Matty Palmer’s corner, securing the game’s only goal. Reflecting on his goal, Platt admitted that it wasn’t the cleanest strike but was nonetheless delighted. "I'll take anything that I can get to be fair," he said with a smile. "We've been trying a lot of in-swingers this season and I think we just thought today we'd mix it up a little bit, go with a little bit of an out-swinger," Platt revealed, describing the tactical tweak that led to his goal. He continued, "The first one he [Palmer] did I got on the end of it, and I just felt like there was a bit of something there for us, so I just told him to keep doing it, and thankfully one went in for us." The goal, which travelled through a crowd of players, left Wimbledon’s goalkeeper stranded. Platt credited teammates David McGoldrick and Alassana Jatta for distracting the goalkeeper. "I think Didzy and Ajay have gone for it and that's probably put the keeper off a little bit," he speculated. There was a moment of confusion during the goal celebration when the stadium announcer credited the goal to McGoldrick. However, Platt was confident it was his. "I was a bit confused when he said that because I was pretty sure it was mine. I was 90% sure it was mine," Platt recalled, laughing off the mix-up. Having already scored once away this season, Platt expressed his happiness at scoring at Meadow Lane." It's always something that I try and add to the game," he said. Referring to his ambitions as a centre-half to contribute more goals. With two goals to his name early in the season, Platt is aiming for more. "As the centre-half, I'm trying to get 4 or 5, you know, 6 a season, and to get 2 pretty early on is good." Looking ahead, Platt is eager to continue the club’s positive start to the season. "I think we've had a pretty good start," he said, reflecting on recent results. "It was important today to get back to winning ways, and we look forward to Barrow midweek." With his goal securing a much-needed win, Platt's performance will undoubtedly give Notts County a boost as they aim to maintain their momentum in the coming fixtures. Notts County head coach Stuart Maynard lauded his side's determination after their hard-fought 1-0 victory over AFC Wimbledon at Meadow Lane. Despite admitting it wasn’t the most fluent of performances, Maynard emphasised the importance of securing the three points in a physically challenging game. The win came courtesy of Matty Platt’s header from a set-piece in the 67th minute, propelling Notts County to joint third in League Two. Maynard was quick to highlight the resilience and discipline his team displayed, particularly when facing an AFC Wimbledon side renowned for their defensive solidity." AFC Wimbledon, Johnny’s team, they’re very hard to beat, they make it very difficult for you, they make the game ugly," he said. "We weren’t at our fluent best. It’s probably been our worst performance at home in the sense of moving the ball, creating overloads, creating clear opportunities, but we showed again our grit and our determination to win the game of football." The match itself wasn’t one for the purists, with Maynard admitting it might not be enjoyable to re-watch. "I think it’ll be one that when we watch back, it won’t be easy on the eye. But we knew that before the game. We said to the lads, this might be a different type of game today. We might not be able to win it by opening them up freely," he reflected. With five clean sheets to their name prior to this encounter, AFC Wimbledon were never going to be easy to break down, and Maynard was particularly pleased with his side’s defensive display, emphasising the importance of clean sheets in achieving long-term success. "They had five clean sheets before today, which is incredible at this stage of the season," he noted. "Clean sheets bring you real success, and that’s why I’m so pleased with the clean sheet today." The decisive goal came from a well-worked set-piece, an area that Maynard credited his coaching staff for diligently preparing. "To get a goal from a set-piece, Craig Saunders [our set-piece coach] has been working so hard on them. We’ve been close from so many, and today it’s a huge credit to him because in the fine margins of the game, his detail that he puts into the lads gets us to win." While the match-winner may have been somewhat scrappy, Maynard recognised the importance of such goals in tight contests. "In tight games like this, you need the set-piece goals," he explained. "They’re the little small margins that you work on all week, and they’re very hard to score from because everyone’s set up against you." Goalkeeper Alex Bass also earned praise for his calm and composed display, making several key saves to ensure Notts County kept their lead intact. "Bassy the goalie, he just makes you so calm," Maynard said. "He makes a lot of the shots that are difficult look so easy. He’s got glue in his gloves, I think." Looking ahead, Maynard acknowledged the demanding schedule, with a midweek trip to Barrow next on the agenda. "That’s what the squad’s for. We’ve got to look at Barrow now. Our full focus was on AFC Wimbledon. We’ll see where the bodies are at tomorrow and come up with a game plan ready for it," he said. Despite the unconvincing performance, Maynard was delighted to secure a vital home win and praised the fans for their continued support. "It’s something we want to make this place a fortress. The crowd have been incredible," he added. "Even today again, getting behind the boys in the 96th minute, urging them on. We feel we’ve rewarded them today with a performance that was grit, determination, and the lads have left everything out there." With their latest victory, Notts County remain well positioned in the promotion hunt, and Maynard will hope his side can continue to build on their momentum as they push towards the top of the League Two table. This was a tough match and all the team worked really hard to secure the win none more than Bass who put in an excellent performance in goal. It wasn’t a classic match by any stretch of the imagination but we got the 3 point and sometimes you have to win ugly.15 points

I thought we handled the game well yesterday, especially given how competitive Wimbledon were in the first half. We looked solid at the back, which is something that’s really improved this season. A few shaky moments, but on the whole, our defence kept them at bay and gave us a platform to nick a goal. It’s always good to see the team fighting for every ball, even when the game isn’t going in our favour. We’re showing more resilience now, and wins like this can be crucial come the end of the season. Every point counts, especially in such a tough league.14 points

That was a proper hard-fought win! The kind of match where you’re just hoping we don’t concede because it felt like one goal would be enough to win it. And it was! What I liked the most was the team’s work rate, everyone from front to back was putting in a shift. It’s not always about playing free-flowing football, sometimes you’ve just got to grind out the result. And we did exactly that today. We didn’t create loads of chances, but the one we got, we took, and defensively we were really switched on. Another clean sheet, and another step closer to where we want to be.14 points
-
Really pleased with the result today. We looked a bit shaky at times, but credit to the lads for keeping their heads and grinding out a result. Defensively, we were solid, and it’s great to see the team able to close out games like this. It wasn’t flashy, but it was a proper team performance with everyone putting in a shift. This is exactly what we need if we want to push for promotion.14 points

Maynard hit the nail on the head when he said it was an 'ugly' win. AFC Wimbledon made it difficult from the start, and it wasn’t a match filled with flair or creativity. But sometimes, that’s what you need in League Two. A clean sheet, a scrappy set-piece goal, and showing grit is what gets you through these tough fixtures. Really pleased to see us come through this one, especially with our defensive efforts.13 points
-
It was a game where we really had to dig deep. Wimbledon came with a plan and made it difficult for us, but the team showed real grit to come through with the win. The defensive effort was outstanding, and we kept our shape brilliantly under pressure. We’ve become much harder to break down this season, and that’s really encouraging to see. The goal might have been scrappy, but they all count, and what matters most is the result. Games like this are crucial if we’re going to keep pushing for the top spots. It’s great to see the team pulling together and getting the job done!12 points

Notts are made of much stronger stuff this season when it comes to competing with the opposition, showing grit, & playing ugly when the need arises. It's a big change from last year in no many ways. The team is now unrecognisable from the team that kept conceding goals like it was no tomorrow. A strong defence is the number prerequisite to be able to challenge for promotion & I think Notts have that defence that they need now with more players like McDonald & Ness to come in if necessary. Games like the one against Wimbledon, they would have lost last season. But we have to give credit for Maynard's substitutions too that changed the game for Notts in that second half.12 points
-
Hard-fought match, and Maynard’s right, it wasn’t pretty but we got the job done.12 points
-
Matty Platt was outstanding throughout the game. His height makes him a real threat to the opposition during set pieces. I was really pleased for him, as it was a brilliant moment for such a hardworking player who doesn’t always get the praise he deserves. He works so well with Jacob Bedeau, who tends to get more of the attention.12 points
-
i dont care so much about the performance because the win was the result we needed. some fans really need to be happy, instead of complaining we dont win and then its the performance. allow the confidence to increase and hopefully then, the performances will get better. winning is important at this stage, no matter how.12 points
-
This was a really important win for Notts & their fourth clean sheet of the season. This team know how to win when they aren't playing at their best and that was the case today. The defensive line were solid again today and Bass was superb. When a team has a good defence there will always be a chance of winning or at least drawing. Matches such as this, Notts would have possibly lost last season. Now they are winning these games by showing grit, determination & a will to win. Notts have lost good players till at least the new year & they just need to keep getting positive results till then. The way they are playing they should be there or there abouts near the top of the league when those players return.. Another tough game awaits on Tuesday away to Barrow. Notts will need to repeat the grit and determination they showed today on Tuesday night, by grinding another win or draw.12 points

Notts County secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory against AFC Wimbledon at Meadow Lane, digging deep to maintain a clean sheet despite being under sustained pressure from the visitors. Matty Platt’s second-half goal proved decisive as the Magpies edged out The Dons in a tightly contested encounter. The match began with both teams cautiously probing each other's defences. Notts County, as has been the norm this season, dominated possession with 68%, but they struggled to convert this into clear-cut opportunities, managing just three shots on target throughout the game. In contrast, AFC Wimbledon, while seeing only 32% of the ball, looked more threatening in the final third, registering eight shots on target and forcing goalkeeper Alex Bas into several crucial saves. The first half was a scrappy affair, with fouls breaking up play frequently. Notts County’s Matty Platt and Lewis Macari were booked, as were Riley Harbottle and James Furlong for the visitors. The physical nature of the contest saw both teams commit multiple fouls, with Wimbledon conceding 19 and Notts County 13. Set-pieces and free kicks became a pivotal aspect of the match, but neither side could capitalise on their opportunities in the opening period. The best chance of the first half fell to AFC Wimbledon’s Omar Bugiel, whose header flashed just wide of the post after a well-worked move down the right-hand side. At the other end, David McGoldrick saw his effort from inside the box narrowly miss the target as Notts County struggled to find a way through The Dons’ resolute defence. In the second half, Notts County began to apply more pressure, with Matt Palmer orchestrating play in midfield. The breakthrough came in the 67th minute, following a corner that saw Palmer deliver an inviting ball into the box. Matty Platt struck the ball and guided his effort into the bottom corner, giving the Magpies a 1-0 lead much to the delight of the Meadow Lane faithful. Despite falling behind, AFC Wimbledon refused to back down. Their attacking threat continued as substitute Huseyin Biler fired a powerful shot from distance in the dying moments, but his effort whistled just past the post. James Tilley also came close with a header that was well saved by Bass, who stood tall to preserve his clean sheet. As the clock ticked towards full-time, Wimbledon threw everything at Notts County, but the Magpies remained resolute, defending with determination to see out the match. In the closing stages, the game became increasingly scrappy, with several stoppages for fouls and a lengthy delay due to an injury to Lewis Macari, who had to be replaced by Rod McDonald. The match ended with AFC Wimbledon continuing to push forward in search of an equaliser, but it was Notts County who held on for a crucial three points. The victory keeps the Magpies firmly in the promotion race, while Wimbledon will be left to rue their missed chances. Platt’s header was brilliant! Solid defensive work from the whole team too. Much-needed win!11 points

That match showed a lot about the character of this team. We weren’t at our best, but the defensive shape was excellent, and Wimbledon struggled to break us down. It’s great to see the team adapting to different challenges. We couldn’t find our rhythm at times, but the lads stayed focused and got the job done. It’s not always about dominating possession or creating loads of chances, sometimes it’s just about doing the basics right. That’s exactly what we did today. We’ve been scoring a lot this season, but it’s wins like this that can be just as important.11 points

That was a tough match, but a deserved three points in the end.11 points

set pieces is an area where i do think we can get goals, but i am delighted for matty platt. he put a lot into his performance and i think we might see him score a few more before the season is over. brilliant worked goal, persisting paid off.10 points

Winning ugly is still winning. On to the next one!10 points

I know everyone keeps saying it, but this game would have ended in defeat last season. If you want to understand just how far we have come, go back and watch footage from last season, then re-watch the full game. You’ll see how solid we were at the back. Alex Bass is an excellent keeper, very reliable and determined. I can overlook performances in tough games, especially when the team is working hard for the win.10 points
-
It was a tough game to watch at times, especially in the first half where we didn’t create many chances. But what I loved was how Matty and the backline kept things tight and stayed composed. Platt’s goal was the turning point, and I think it just shows how much he’s growing into his role. The fact that we kept the clean sheet as well just makes this win even more satisfying.9 points
-
fair play, stuart maynard is right and i think had we tried harder to force the pretty football we would have lost the game simply due to how wimbledon had set themselves up.9 points
-
Definitely Bass for me we’d have been at least 2-0 down at half time but for Bass.9 points
-
Platt’s ability to get that goal from Palmer’s corner was exactly what the team needed. I think it’s a great sign when defenders can step up and make a difference in tight games like this. His goal might not have been the flashiest, but it showed real awareness and hunger. It’s also encouraging to see him aiming to add more goals to his game. Getting two goals so early in the season from a centre-half is brilliant and could be a huge asset as we push for more results. Defensively, he and the backline were solid, and that clean sheet speaks volumes after recent home games. Well-deserved win!8 points
-
Love seeing Matty Platt contribute with goals! Excellent performance all round.8 points

A manager’s words have never been so true. I think it shows how well he reads the game, and while it’s clear we need to be more clinical, Stuart Maynard’s awareness of what AFC Wimbledon would bring was spot on. We won’t always be the better side, but in tight or tough games, one chance can change everything. Yesterday showed how important it is to be patient at times.8 points
-
Bass for me too, he'll be the reason we get points this season and that was massively missing last season. Wimbledon must have been gutted that we came in for him, it was fantastic work from our recruitment team to get him.8 points
-
Another good performance by our back line to record another clean sheet Platt & Bedeau were superb in defence. Palmer did the business once again & Abbott was good in the second half when transferred to central midfield. Tsaroulla was good when he came on in the second half. Crowley had much more room to work in the second half & Didzy was his usual hard working self. But I choose Alex Bass for my man of the match for being absolutely superb in goal once again. What a signing he's been for Notts.8 points
-
My player shortlist for Man of the Match are:- George Abbott, Nick Tsaroulla, Dan Crowley, Matty Platt, Alex Bass, Matt Palmer, Jacob Bedeau, David McGoldrick7 points

Matty Platt is part of a defensive unit that has made such a difference to Notts this season. His contribution to this improvement has been immense. And I believe our defensive team can only get better as the season progresses. The improvement in Notts defensive game gives them a real chance of getting promotion if they can keep up the good form they have been showing.7 points
-
It wasn’t the prettiest game, but I agree with Maynard, sometimes you’ve got to win ugly. AFC Wimbledon didn’t make it easy for us to play our usual game, but the lads showed real determination. The clean sheet is massive for us, especially given how tight the game was. Maynard’s comments about set-pieces being crucial were spot on. Craig’s work with the team really paid off today with Platt’s goal. Bassi was solid as ever at the back, keeping us calm under pressure. We’ll need to keep up this kind of defensive resilience for the rest of the season if we want to stay near the top of the table.7 points
-
I’ve always admired the family feel at Notts County, and this just reinforces that. Stuart Maynard’s support for Cedwyn during this time is exactly what we would expect from a club that really values its players. Mental health isn’t something you can just shake off, and it’s great to see Cedwyn getting the help he needs without any pressure to return before he’s ready. As Maynard said, the team will be there for him, and I hope he knows that the fans are too. I can’t wait to see him back on the pitch, but only when he’s fully ready, mentally and physically.7 points
-
Completely agree with Stuart Maynard’s assessment, it wasn’t the most attractive match to watch, but it’s great to see the lads come away with the win. AFC Wimbledon’s defensive shape was tough to break down, and it’s matches like these that show the importance of being clinical from set-pieces. Platt’s goal may have been scruffy, but they all count! I also thought our defence handled Wimbledon’s pressure really well. Bassi was immense, and I think Maynard’s spot on with how calm he keeps the team. It’s games like this that test your mental toughness, and Notts showed they’ve got plenty of it.6 points
-
I thought the result showed the level of improvement not only the new signings have made, but what is brought to the team under Stuart Maynard. It sounded like Wimbledon felt they could get more, and by all accounts they do sound as if they were the better team. Performances sometimes have to be overlooked, because the result is that important - as is returning to winning ways on home soil. We have the foundation to prove our promotion chasing credentials, so let's not get tied up in the performance. I am sure the squad sees there's a need for improvement in the long term, but the short term is maximising the points we pick up. Last season, I would have feared 1-0 wouldn't have been enough, considering how much Wimbledon threw towards us, and by all accounts defensively we were decent and Alex Bass exceptional between the sticks.6 points

It was a much-needed win and it’s big in the sense of we’ve beaten a team that will likely finish top 10 and stopped the mini 0-1 home run. And I am happy with the result it but wasn’t quite the performance I was hoping for. Maybe I have high standards after being spoiled with our attacking displays but the first half was really poor, probably the worst we’ve played all season yet we actually went into the break not 1-0 down for once! I just wanted us to look like we had more of an idea about against teams who are happy for us to have the ball, but we didn’t. We were really slow and almost awkward on the ball. We still struggled to create any real decent chances in that game, especially before the goal, Jatta had the best chance right before it actually. That was a grind it out type of result and whilst those type of performances are needed, I was hoping off the back of two similar games in Gillingham and Port Vale we’d have adapted and improved a touch more. It’s funny cos over the run of those three home games, in my opinion, no team truly deserved a win so 3 points from all three is actually a fair reflection. We are a lot better defensively and Bass is fantastic in goal, so those are massive positives. We did see the game out well once we’d scored and that was good see. We look more comfortable and capable when we have to defend now. Just need a bit more spark in our attack, if that clicks again, we should be on for a really good season.6 points
-
It wasn't pretty but it is 3 points against a promotion rival. Sometimes you have to dig out results and Notts did that today.6 points
-
Alex Bass played exceptionally well, but I voted for Matty Platt. We mustn't overlook how important his goal was, and he was also very solid defensively.6 points
-
we need to forget about who scores, try to play without nerves and just work harder at converting chances. our start is normal, but we have scored a good amount of goals so i dont we need to fuss. just dedicate some of the training leading into games with chance creation drills for our attacking players, including the likes of matt palmer.6 points

Fair play to Cedwyn Scott for speaking out. It’s not easy in football, but Notts County’s support shows what kind of club we are.6 points
-
Mental health in football is a topic we don’t hear about enough, so to see Cedwyn Scott opening up about his struggles is really refreshing. As fans, we sometimes forget how tough it can be for players when they’re not on the pitch, and Stuart Maynard’s words about how isolated long-term injury can make someone feel really hit home. The team environment helps, but it’s not the same as being fully involved day to day. I’ve got so much respect for the club in how they’re handling this situation. They’re putting Cedwyn’s health first and ensuring he gets the help he needs. It’s also a reminder for all of us to check in on each other, whether we’re in sports or not. Mental health matters, and Cedwyn’s story is proof that it’s okay to ask for help.6 points
-
Cedwyn Scott has shown real courage by speaking openly about his struggles, especially in a sport like football where mental health hasn’t always been prioritised. Stuart Maynard’s comments about supporting him, both on and off the pitch, show just how much the club cares for its players. Footballers are often seen as invincible, but they’re human too. It’s heartening to see Notts stepping up for Cedwyn during such a difficult time. I wish him all the best in his recovery and hope we see him back doing what he loves soon, but only when he’s ready.6 points
-
Maynard’s words about Cedwyn’s leave of absence really struck a chord with me. Mental health is still not talked about enough in football, and Cedwyn’s courage to come forward is a step in the right direction. As fans, we can sometimes be guilty of focusing too much on the results and not enough on the well-being of the players. Injuries are tough enough physically, but the mental toll can be just as challenging, if not more. I’m glad the club is handling this so well, and I hope it opens up more conversations about mental health in the sport.6 points
-
It's great to see someone unexpected scoring the winning goal, especially in such an important match. I agree that his height makes him a natural target. With players like Jatta as well, it forces the opposition to think carefully about who to mark. The joy on Matty Platt's face after scoring, along with his celebration with Jacob Bedeau, was absolutely brilliant.5 points
-
Alex Bass played well and kept us in the game, no doubt he helped us get the win, but I thought Matt Platt was outstanding in defence.5 points
-
Not pretty but who cares we got 3 points. Don't get points for pretty football. COYP5 points
-
This was a typical game of two halves in the first half Notts were very lacklustre and we’re grateful to Bass for keeping the score at 0-0, the second half substitutions made all the difference, Notts were much more positive and had several good chances before Matty Platt managed to put the ball in the net. It wasn’t the best game we’ll see all season but Notts did enough to get the 3 points.5 points
-
Good gritty & determined win today from Notts against a well organised side. I think the substitutions from Maynard at half time helped to change the game in Notts favour. Putting Abbott into the centre of midfield & bringing on Tsaroulla for Gordon at half time gave Notts, much more impetus by freeing up Crowley & they looked much more threatening as a result. Stuart will be very pleased with the fourth clean sheet of the season & how the goalkeeper and defensive line played to keep out Wimbledon who were dangerous at times. Pleased that Matty Platt as got a goal and the goal was from a set piece corner. Certainly not a Notts type of goal but those type of goals come in handy in a close game like this. Another tough fixture to come with Barrow next. Onwards we go.5 points
