I watched a programme about Anne Frank the other day, it reconstructed what it would have been like at the beginning of the invasion of German troops, going into hiding, and eventually how the Franks were discovered to be hiding. I couldn't imagine fleeing my home, my family and taking a risk to find safety like some of these brave souls.

The house was leasehold but I arranged with the seller to buy the freehold at the same time of the purchase
Another scandal of recent times, are private roads etc where external mgmt companies can charge over the top annual fees
I have watched a lot of Homes Under the Hammer [don't laugh], and they stress the importance of making sure you check the title. If it's a leasehold, make sure you can extend it, or have enough time to sell it on. I would only look at Freehold properties when I am in a position to buy, I know not everyone can, and that leasing is virtually securing what could be considered a rental for usually your lifetime.
Even landlords of rental properties are pulling cons by claiming they are selling their houses in order to vacate legal tenants, and then after a few weeks, they push the property price up.

Walsall:
"Monday’s result made it even more painful for Walsall, after being 12 points clear at the top of the table in mid-January and 15 clear of fourth place, then just three wins in their final 21 games meant they had to settle for a spot in the play-offs."

He was indeed, there was a very good drama programme about Alan Carr and his early life which featured his Dad when he was a manager.
I’ve just remembered what the series about Alan Carrs life was called it was Changing Ends, well worth a watch. I didn’t care much for him until I saw the series but it changed my perspective, the young boy who plays him as a child was brilliant.
I really enjoyed Traitors I thought Alan Carr played a brilliant game, I was really sorry for Joe who got booted out at the last minute and he’d guessed the traitors.
Alan’s winning will go to a worthy charity, children’s cancer. 👏
Hello @Kontklllloih and welcome to our friendly community, I look forward to seeing you join in.
It’s Bonfire Night tonight, who’s having a bonfire? Who’s having a firework party? Who’s going to a organise firework display?
We aren’t doing any of the above, although the local football club are having an organised display which we’ll watch from the safety of our bedroom window. 😂
I remember In the sixties as kids we loved Bonfire night, all the local kids would collect combustible stuff and we’d build a huge bonfire on waste ground and let off fireworks as we watched the guy burn on the top.
We also used to make a guy in the days before bonfire night and put it on a homemade wooden trolley or a pram and ask passing folk for a “penny for the guy”, as I lived near the Meadow lane stadium I used to take my Guy there on match days and stand outside before and after the match, if Notts won everyone would be happy and give money if they lost I didn’t get so much.
Who else has got memories of their childhood bonfire nights?

A householder across the road from us always stages a Firework party but most of the fireworks let off are either rockets or air bombs which make such a noise. Whatever happened to the Fountains, Catherine Wheels, Cascades & Roman Candles? The relatively quieter fireworks.

Does any member remember Jumping Jacks fireworks that were banned quite a while ago

Yes I remember them @super_ram we used to have to get out of the way as they jumped all over the place. Catherine wheel pinned to the outside toilet door at the bottom of the yard, rockets in milk bottles, Roman candles, firestorm and penny bangers of course. No health and safety then.

Hi guys and thank you for the warm welcome!
I have kind of weird connection and hope its still accepted :D So im football fan from Finland and my connection to Notts County actually comes from Football manager. Been managing the team for I don't know for how many years/games and with that started to follow the team in real life and now trying to actually catch games when ever they come.
So little odd..but from just playing to checking scores and then to actually watching games I wanted to find a place to learn more what is happening and what you guys are talking about.
Also sorry for my English its obviously my second language

It is great how you have come to support Notts, there are supporter groups all over the world for Notts and Finland is anew one for me. @Chris, @liampie do you know if we have a Finnish Magpies at all?
Do not worry about your English, it's perfectly fine. 👍
@Waltteriw you are more than welcome, you are now a supporter of the oldest professional football club in the world, it’s something we are very proud of, it’s great that you joined us and your English is excellent.

2500 fans didn't go to watch a training exercise. They went to see a Notts win & to celebrate progression into the knockout stages of the competition.
I want to see my club aim to win every single match they play. That's what the game of football is all about.
You just can't switch on and switch off a winning mindset between one particular match & another. Paterson has to raise his team to face Cheltenham. What's he going to say, will he say that this match now matters so I want 110% effort? It really shouldn't have to be that way.

I pretty much agree with everything he said in that video.
Interesting comments here. If Traore really is one of our two biggest investments then wow. But do we really know who he was referring to? I would have thought that a certain player whose name rhymes with Harry Potter would be more likely as he's completely vanished from the first team picture. But regardless of that, it's a highly negative thing to say - the door should be closed on a player when he leaves and not before. Telling someone he won't be given a chance regardless of how hard he tries is hugely counterproductive.
I really don't care about this competition and I feel it's demeaning for us as a professional club to play an academy team, but it's still important to keep the good form and the good vibes going. They've evaporated a bit despite our good recent league form.
What a great servant to our club Les is, I hope he has a lovely day, he can bring those cakes round here if he likes. 😂
Happy birthday,Les.

Is the goalkeeper department becoming the new place for quick exits at Meadow Lane, rather than the head coach or manager? It feels like there's always someone leaving. The last two coaches left in strange circumstances. If you're truly committed to your job, why would you step down to the National League just to work under someone from your old club?
I'll say it clearly. I hope Darren Smith gives Kelle Roos the backing he needs. With the right support, Smith could help Roos improve and make it easier for Martin Paterson to deal with any slip-ups.

Alan played 101 times for Notts between Aug 2010 & April 2013 scoring 16 goals.
The 2011-12 season was a very successful season for Alan at Notts. "His form saw him pick up consecutive player of the month awards for Nov & Dec respectively".
"He flourished under Manager Martin Allen & finished the season with 8 goals & 13 assists.Judge scooped both the Notts County Players' Player of the Year & Supporters' Player of the Year awards for the 2011–12 season".
(Source Wiki)
Alan is just the type of player in midfield that Notts could do with right now. I wish him well in his retirement. I'm sure we will see him remain in football in some capacity.
I think Craig Short deserves the credit for bringing him in, initially on loan, thanks to his Blackburn contacts. Most of his signings were rubbish but credit where it's due.
@Sheffield Pie I will never forgive Craig Short for the Ben Burgess fiasco
Rewind and Renew
Now Stuart's gone what are we to do,
We have to pull together and get a new crew.
Bye bye Didsey you deserved alot more,
Before disappearing out the contract door.
Alex goes a floundering off to 'Pompey'
Good deal or bad, what would you say.
In comes Martin our new Head Coach,
A difficult job, how will he approach.
Followed by Andy the new number two,
Fresh from the England camp with plenty to do.
New additions trickle into the squad,
One a loanee, the rest not costing a Wad.
In this division there's nowhere to hide,
Play hard with quality to keep the pride.
The season beckons and in August we start,
Fans feelings ramping skyward, falling apart.
Like Thespians of old on opening night,
Remember your lines, don't give us a fright.
"WE" are all one Team at the end of the day,
Proud of Notts County, what more can we say.

Backing Time.
Eyes wide open and still can't see,
What's this black blanket infront of me.
A real challenge not had for a while,
Needs thought, confrontation and a little guile.
The use of eyes not relied on too much,
Hands, arms and toes, it has to be touch.
This thing turned my world upside down,
Moping around with nothing but a frown.
Even the birds aren't chirping any more,
That beautiful sounds gone as I open the door.
Temperatures dropping the weather people say,
Going to be with us for more than a day.
Everything changing, even wearing thicker socks,
All because we've turned back the clocks.
Keep the poems coming folks I am enjoying reading them.
Nice one @Michael D Pie. Keep them coming. They are a great read.
What are your takeaways from the Brackley Town defeat?
I think there could be quite a few to chew over.
- Show previous comments 1 more
One of my big takeaways from the Brackley loss is that Notts have to start solving how to play against a physical side that typically deal with Notts possession based style by employing a combination of a high press, a compact low/mid block, & exploiting the defensive spaces left behind through quick counter attacks, direct play, & aerial bombardment.
This problem continues to plague Notts when they play teams employing these tactics.
Sticking to the micro-level of the goals conceded last night...the balance of the criticism doesn't seem right.
Sure, Roos punch wasn't the best but it was out of the penalty box, which gives the defence a chance. He could've done better with the high ball back in, but where did Ness drift out to? Platt would've been in the centre of the box contesting that. RodMac would've been there at least rather than the corner of the 6-yard box. But as our main CB, Ness can't take himself out of that position. Bedeau was grounded and Macari retreated to the goaline, leaving Hall as the nearest to their scorer. None of the backline cover themselves with glory here. Roos gets the biggest slice, but Ness isn't blameless. His position in our 3-4-2-1 means that he should never leave that central area.
Another takeaway from this match is the revelation that the Notts squad definitely needs strengthening during the January transfer window.
The players that replaced the players that started the match for Notts didn't improve the performance of the team unfortunately.

Notts travel to St James Park Brackley to meet the National League side in the FA Cup 1st Round on Saturday..
Can Notts have a good cup run this season. What are your thoughts on the match. Which players would be in your Notts side. What would be your final score?

It felt like an accident waiting to happen and so it proved. We created about three chances in 120 minutes against a part-time team. After the lead we completely handed the initiative to the home side and never got it back.
We missed Palmer badly; if he's fit, he should be playing (with the exception of tomorrow's silly cup game against Man United under 12s). But I do have some sympathy with MP here - you should be able to rest a single player without everything collapsing like a pack of cards. Especially as the replacement was the experienced Ollie Norburn, who was about a close as we came to a marquee signing this summer. And the less said about the Sunday League-esque performance of our goalkeeper the better.
I don't agree with some of the comments about the referee, I thought he got all the big calls spot on - their number 11 had been offside and was interfering in play for the offside goal, Grant was tripped for our penalty (this was more visible from one side than the other) and Norburn obviously handled the ball for their penalty. The fake outrage by the commentary team irritated me and was disrespectful towards officials who did their job well.
The better team on the day progressed, we've got to get back into our rhythm and forget this quickly.
Of course we all have to move on from the Brackley match, but forget the defeat, no way. The defeat was an utter embarrassment & the squad now have to show Martin & the fanbase that each player is worth their place in the matchday squad.
On Saturday's performance several players are clearly not, and the rest have something to prove. Whether tomorrow's game against United under 21s is silly or not, the players that are picked for that game must treat that game very seriously. Their future at Notts may just depend on how they treat it.
This game has come quickly & Notts need to show a massively positive attitude towards this game. I expect them to treat the game against Utd as if they are playing top of the table Walsall in a league 2 game. Nothing less will do.
I think now that the dust has settled, and we're over the disappointment of Saturday night, maybe we will see the performance was simply down to stage-fright. The players seem to freeze under the spotlight of being expected to win against the minnows on live nationwide TV. Perhaps it was just the giant killing phenomenon of the FA Cup that worked against us. It has happened to many better teams than us over the years. As @Robbie says it's time to move on. The Brackley match will not define our season. What we need now is a response and then "normal service" will resume. COYP!
Notts have a tough fixture list in December . Five games that could define a season one way or the other. Two of the five are against MK Dons.
9th Dec: MK Dons (H)
13th Dec: Grimsby (A)
20th Dec: Walsall (H)
26th Dec: Chesterfield (A)
29th Dec: MK Dons (A)
We meet four of our major rivals for honours all in one month. It's going to be great battle in every match. Can Notts come through it unscathed with plenty of points?
I think I would be happy if we could avoid defeat in four of those games. I don't think it is beyond the realms of possibly to achieve that, but Grimsby, Chesterfield & MK Dons away will be very tough.
I think that last season, I don't think it would have been possible to be that optimistic. Our record against the top 10 sides wasn't good at all, but this season Notts are made of sterner stuff.
Fifteen points are on the table. I think 7 or 8 points from a possible 15 would be ok, anything more would be a bonus. It's certainly going to be an exciting December. Looking forward to it.

Speculation is fine on all fronts but personally I think the old adage one game at a time will see us in a more positive position than people think. The progress from week to week we have made and having strength in depth fills me with confidence to the extent that I can't wait for this incredible journey to begin. COYP.

That’s a tough schedule for Notts they’re all six pointers, I hope we can win a couple and maybe draw a couple but let’s get through November first, it’ll certainly be an interested battle at the top.
I am in the minority who believe we should take each game as it comes in this case. We have managed some good results, while others have been a bit disappointing.
To be ahead of Swindon Town twice and only draw was frustrating. Added to that, the defeat to Brackley Town in the FA Cup may still be hanging over the camp, with the feeling that we should have made more of a game of it.
I also think we either come together strongly for certain fixtures or just scrape through them by the skin of our teeth. The aim should be to pick up as many points as possible and not dwell too much on defeats or draws. I know I mentioned the Swindon game, but it is only an example of where we need to learn to close the game down once we have taken the lead.
Watching the penalties last night inevitably brought back memories of the playoff final.
So I checked out how Cedwyn was getting on and was so pleased to see he looked to be enjoying his football 'back home'. 6 goals so far this season.
Although they lost today the BBC report included this,
"With only one defeat in 13 league games and undefeated at home, confidence was high for South Shields, and Cedwyn Scott slid a big chance just wide of the far post inside the first three minutes".
Will always have a great regard for what he added to that year's promotion winning team.
Should have kept Jodi Jones on for the penalty shootout against Brackley. He's our best penalty taker.
I feel sorry for Kelle Roos. He stayed focused and gave us hope with his penalty save.
Their keeper came across as a bit cocky before that, which is not a good attitude to show, even though he had done well. Alassana Jatta should not have missed his effort. It put us on the back foot and it might have been better to let someone calmer, like Will Jarvis, take the first one.
If we had chosen the right penalty takers in the right order, it would have put more pressure on the opposition.

This is Asda now, right?
I have never heard of this supermarket, but the building looks similar to what I recognise as being Asda. Just with some moderisation. How big of a supermarket chain was GEM?
@TheSkipper
The supermarket chain "GEM" no longer exists as an independent entity; its British operations were acquired by Asda in the mid-1960s, and its U.S. and Canadian operations ceased in the late 1970s and 1980s. Asda now occupies the sites of GEMs UK Supermarkets.
