Hello @Ros and welcome to the PoN community, I hope you enjoy being part of our friendly group, weโ€™d love to hear a little about you if youโ€™d like to introduce yourself.

Aljofree has gone back to Man Utd.

It was a weird loan. He actually did well in most of the games he played. But he had absolute disasters in two, at Barrow and V Gills I think. One of those is bad, but two means MP cannot trust you as he's terrified of it happening again. A striker having an absolute mare is one thing, but a defending having one means defeat usefully.

I hope his next loan is a happier one. Good luck to him for the future.

It was such a poor performance yesterday, I think it's fair to truthfully examine where this team and this set of players stand.

Based on the Accy game, I'll divide the starting XI into 3 groups

1) Still pieces to build a promotion team/squad around - Macari, Bedeau, Tsaroulla, Iorpenda, Dennis

2) Not so bad yesterday and probably best regarded as squad back-ups anyway - Roos, Norburn

3) Players that might need to be re-evaluated in terms of how far they can take us - Platt, Hall, Kouhyar, Jatta

Platt - Rod McDonald better be injured or there's been some cowardly team management going on. Montague recruited Platt as a starter and RodMac as a back up in summer '24, but this season's evidence should throw that out of the window and the team should be picked on merit. Maybe Monty missed Sept/Oct when RM was a revelation. Platt is a fine L2 defender, but is prone to poor runs of form, is a below average distributor, can't use the space ahead of him and has stopped contributing as a goal threat, so the jury's out on him being a promotion level L2 defender. All I'm saying is that if there's someone who's been playing better this season in his position, they should have the shirt instead. Let's see if they can defend it and Platt/Ness can earn it on performances.

Hall - We've seen so may Charlie Whitakeresque games from Hall by now - largely anonymous and ineffectual, and way too easily dispossessed and knocked off the ball. I speculated before that Hall was probably a schoolboy level striker that Spurs coaxed into becoming a midfielder when he didn't turn out to be big, strong or fast enough. He's still got great skill, composure in the box and an eye for goal, but 3 out of 5 of your performances in midfield can't be like yesterday's

Kouhyar - was hoping he could force his way into the team but instead he shows like a natural sub, blazing brightly for 10mins and then dropping off a cliff. MP doesn't give too many chances but he does give them and you have to be ready to take them. He didn't

Jatta - the big one, where to start? He has too many games like yesterday. English pro football isn't like the Danish league, you just don't get the time and space. You have to try to win your individual battles with the opponent. Does he try enough? Probably. But that doesn't change the fact that he loses 80-90% of his tussles and challenges. I wish he was regarded as someone who still had to prove himself rather than a surefire sell-on asset and then maybe him and his agent would see it that way too. I get it, we want (big) money for him so have to talk him up. But how nice would it be to tell him you have to do better, take a seat on the bench.

The subs are a whole other story, so won't get started on that. Comments? Is most of that the usual over-reaction (probably is ;) ) or does any of it ring true.

  • Agree with all the above but it's also about the big players, winners, leaders, who can make other players around them better. If we had a couple of those then almost any other nine players in our squad would be fine in supporting roles. The problem is we don't have any partnerships on the pitch or anyone inspiring the rest, driving them on, as well as chipping in with goals and assists. Palmer and Robertson have a bit of that but not the whole deal. Norburn talked the talk when he arrived but not delivered. JJ is past his best. Need a new impact signing urgently in the mould of Glenn Roeder or Ryan Yates. Not more 'data model says they might be worth x% more in two years' signings.

Some may not agree, but I don't want to see young loanee players being recruited during the January transfer window. Notts need seasoned experienced professionals who are going to strengthen the squad & hopefully help get Notts promoted.

The summer transfer window is the ideal time to recruit players that can be developed into valuable assets along with talented young players from Premier League sides who can serve q good purpose. I don't think the January transfer window is the right time for these type of signings.

I do think Palmer and Robertson being out at the same is almost as disastrous as if Jatta and Dennis were to be injured at the same time.

Playing out from the back isnโ€™t Plattโ€™s strength and watching him and Roos constantly play long balls to no-one was and is painful. But I do think getting Palmer back in the side will change things. Norburn in the middle is ok, but in terms of starting attacks and keeping us ticking over heโ€™s just not doing it for me. Palmer always moves himself around to make himself available to collect the ball off the defenders taking the pressure off them to play. And we've missed Robertsonโ€™s energy in midfield, again not a dig at Norburn he battles but heโ€™s no where near as mobile as Robbo.

Iโ€™ll come in to defend Jatta a bit here. I think because of his size we think he should just bulldoze players all the time. But more often than not we play poor balls to him, heโ€™s either chasing lost causes, fighting for flick on's or he has a defender tight to him pushing and pulling him. Play a half decent ball to him and heโ€™s usually fine. Again, with Palmer and Robbo back, we should get a bit more control in midfield and be able to play closer to him rather than long balls from defence.

  • Absolutely agree @ARLukomskiย ball retention is poor. It seems like weโ€™re playing panic football. Few have the composure to control the ball and pass. It just seems itโ€™s head it kick it as far away as possible like a hot potato! I donโ€™t know why Roos continues a long clearance trying to find Jatta, it never comes off. It feels like the team is playing with fear. I agree @piedestrianย we have a group of squad players. I donโ€™t think any of this is knee jerk reaction, a number of positive results have masked some poor performances.

Just found the courage to watch the highlights and their goal confirmed my suspicion at the time that Roos should have come for it. When the initial ball is played over the top, Roos is outside his six yard box, but instead of coming forward a few yards to claim it, he retreated. Accringtonโ€™s goalscorer basically took his touch literally four yards in front of where Roos was originally stood.

That being said, Iโ€™d like to know why our three centre halves were all within a few yards of each other? What was Platt doing and why was Macari so far over to the left?

We should have hammered a side like Accrington but yet again we play the same boring side to side football, hoping to get a cross in from the wings which is nearly always terrible.

Weโ€™re desperate for the return of Palmer and Robertson so that we can push Iorpenda up into the 10 role as neither Hall (still canโ€™t work out what he brings) nor Grant are effective enough.

Notts seem to lose the tactical battle against opponents at Meadow Lane more often than not.

Opponents just sit back and allow Notts possession & just challenge Notts to break them down. They then bide their time to either take advantage of a Notts mistake at the back, or hit Notts on the break when they can.

These opponents also tend to bully Notts with their physicality, they also employ the dark arts, by slowing the game down, fouling by pushing, pulling & time wasting.

Since Notts were promoted this problem has remained a big factor with Williams, Maynard & now Paterson unable to solve it. Paterson still has an opportunity, but I think the problem will persist unless Notts can recruit strong & skillful players who will have the skill to unlock these opponents defensive tactics.

City's Stuart Maynard and Ollie Pearce win November leagu...

York City have scooped up both monthly awards from the Enterprise National League after a perfect record in the month of November was rewarded.

  • Heโ€™s certainly landed on his feet by ending up at York as he got himself one of the best clubs outside of the Football League. They were unlucky not to get promoted last season, their current squad is full of quality players for the level one them being the player of the month award winner Ollie Pearce. He's the best striker in that league and having scored 16 in 21 he could get close to Maccaโ€™s record!

On New Year's Day, Stuart Maynard's York City currently stand in 2nd place in the National League, They have only lost two of their 24 matches so far with 15 wins. They have scored 63 goals & conceded only 26. It's nice to see Stuart doing well.

A much better performance from Notts, especially in the first half, & getting a creditable draw in the end.

So who's your PON Man of the Match. I've chosen the starting eleven plus one substitute for you to make your choice

Those players are,

Roos, Macari, Platt, Bedeau, Tsaroulla, Norburn, Iorpenda, Kouhyar, Hall, Dennis, Jatta. Gordon

  • 4 points against a promotion rival is a good return and they are the top scorers in the league too so all in all a good result.

Interesting hearing Adam and Stall talk about Aljofree being the only defender that has scored this season so far. Given we don't usually struggle for goals you do tend to sometimes overlook things like this but we are actually the joint 3rd worst, having only scored 5 goals from set-pieces and this is where defenders usually score. I know our strength is in open play but the average across the league from set-pieces is 9.

And given how right at the end against MK we had a number of corners and free-kicks it would be nice to feel like we can be more of a threat from them.

It's time to wrap up 2025. No doubt you'll look back on the year with mixed feelings, recalling the highs, the lows and - most importantly of all - the number of prediction league points you had. We can help with the last one. All of these matches kick off at 7:45 p.m. on Monday - don't forget your joker!

Switching formations or systems mid season is a bigger deal than it was in decades past, and needs a strong motivating reason.

We actually have one right now, the title of the post 'Getting your best players on the pitch'

Under LW, our best performers were attackers. That hasn't been the case this season (the last one too, although there was a fair bit balance Bass/ Platt/Bedeau v Didzy/Jatta)

This season though? Haven't our better players been McDonald, Platt since he came back, Macari's been super-steady and Bedeau is one of our best players period?

A back 4 of Macari-Platt-McDonald-Bedeau looks pretty strong to me. Palmer and Robbo in front of them is fine. We could surprise teams with 3 behind Jatta.

Can't believe I'm suggesting going from 3 to 4 defenders when chasing promotion but there is a justification based on performance quality of the players I think.

I think it's all about creativity. I've mentioned previously that our main creative outlets as a team lie in our attacking midfielder and wing backs. With our wing backs, I've found myself wanting to change style because we've not seen that consistency like we did with Nemane and Jones previously. Playing WB's also leaves us more vulnerable and exposed to threaded passes around the back. Our WB's, and this might be a tad harsh, have all shown that they are more squad players at this level and nothing short of the occasional 7 out of 10 performance. Itโ€™s also slightly odd weโ€™re putting so much pressure on this working as everyone and their dog knows that Dennis, Jatta and Grant arenโ€™t gonna get to the ball first on any cross, inverted wing back or not.

I think itโ€™d take less weight and probably criticism of Grant as well if we played a 4-2-3-1, because he can press while (both normal and inverted) wingers can be more creative and attacking. Iโ€™d really like us to mix it up, because I could literally write a scouting report for the next 20 teams we face as itโ€™s blindingly obvious.

Certain players were brought into the team because the powers that be at the Club thought that those players would be able to execute the playing style that the Club prefer to play. That formation being a 3-4-2-1 or a variation around that formation.

I agree that creativity in this team is important & that this style of play needs creative players to make it work successfully.

I still believe that having a back three is my preferred option. Having two wingbacks that are good defensively is a must, along with two strong central midfielders that can also drive forward & initiate attacks.

I do think that Martin is right to encourage competitiveness in the squad, & players should have to fight for their place, but I don't necessarily think that Notts should change a style or formation just to accommodate having as many of the better gifted players in the side as possible.

Martin has to ensure that the side is collectively his strongest all over the pitch, & that sometimes means that some of the gifted players may have to wait their opportunity on the bench.

A dissapointing defeat against Chesterfield today. Notts never really got going.

I've chosen the starting eleven & one Substitute for you to pick your PON Man of the Match for Notts.

Those players are.

Roos, Macari, Platt, Bedeau, Tsaroulla, Norburn, Iorpenda, Bennetts, Grant, Dennis, Jatta, Gordon.

Hasn't the groupthink on Kelle Roos got out of hand? He really hasn't been that bad.

Yes, his first few games were shaky in general. He made 1 awful passing out gaffe which led to the concession of a goal. That can happen to any keeper, as we see in the premiership, week in week out. 1 of those in 12 games isn't a disaster, Slocs for one will know that. 2 in quick succession can cost a keeper his place....3 in a season might be the limit

But I don't think it's that - during his shaky first few games he dropped a couple of high balls. No damage was done, but this can really trigger certain fans. A bit like a button on a baby's toy, or revealing your face from behind your hands can trigger a baby :) And once those fans get that idea in their heads, objectivity flies out of the window.

In reality though, if you discount the first 4 or 5 games, when he might have been pretty nervous and unfamiliar with everybody, I think he's been fine in these last 6 or 7 games. It's even refreshing how quickly and decisively he releases the ball. I don't mind the punching at all, that might help launch a counter attack as well.

Nobody knows how it will work out for him over the season, but surely he deserves fans' support. Can't everyone see the progress over the course of the first dozen games?

I never look at X or places like that @liampie. I thought it was bad enough on here and on podcasts, so I can well imagine how terrible it was elsewhere.

i think some areas like to be the biggest moaners, happy when we win but confrontational if results dont go notts way.

i like seeing well thought out criticism, i dont like when its personal or just negative for the sake of it.

Two different goalkeeper coaches and still the same issue prevails with Roos, which tells you he won't learn or become any more comfortable with aerial balls.

We really missed a trick only signing one goalkeeper, but my theory is the board already saw what mess Gag brought in with Roos - you wouldn't want another "seasoned" goalkeeper with massive flaws on a big wage.

Just happy that it's now a priority as alluded to by Montague, which will mean that Griffiths and Perott will likely be shipped out on loan to get some experience.

Your Wednesday Morning Weatherย

ย

ย

After just eight months at Carlisle, our Wembley hero is on the move again - this time very close to home at South Shields of the National League North. There was an undisclosed fee.

Hope he can finally get playing and scoring regularly now!

Good morning, itโ€™s a dry start so far and fairly mild. Iโ€™m a bit bleary eyed this morning after we were both awake in the early hours for no discernible reason and then awake early this morning, so I might need to grab a few zzzโ€™s later.

All our shopping is done thank god for online shopping, our Daughter in Law is buying all the fresh stuff at the supermarket on Christmas Eve, rather her than me. Mrs. T will be baking today and we need to withdraw some cash for the grandkids, apart from that nothing else happening.

I hope everyone has a good day.

  • Good evening everyone. Just a quiet day in with the Mrs after all the festivities.

Spent some time last night listening to the Test match coverage from Australia. England won the fourth Test. The first time they've won in Australia in 15 years.

It's nice to get a win against the old enemy even though England have lost the series. Hopefully England can win the fifth and final Test & send the Barmy Army home much happier.

Good morning we made it safe to Norfolk yesterday in around two and a half hours, we have a lovely large 4 bedroomed house to stay in for the week with the family with everything we need for a comfortable stay.

Mrs. T made one of her famous curries for us all, a chicken Bhuna and in the evening we settled down to play the board game Traitors which we had bought for the whole family for Christmas, it was a real good laugh trying to guess who amongst us was the traitor, it turned out to be grandaughter Chloe which surprised us all. If you like the TV series youโ€™ll love the game, highly recommended.

Today weโ€™ll probably go for a walk along the sea front when everyone is up.

Well I'd hesitate to say that he's not a top league player. He was only playing in England's 5th tier until recently. I see you've just mentioned that he's been released - I hope he finds a good base for himself, but obviously would love him back here.

The 5th tier was never his level, so top marks to Montague on that one. He was a regular in a L1 promotion team and then played in the Championship. He was probably desperate to have a go at top tier football, but Brazil was probably too ambitious. I'd guess he could play top tier in places like Chile, Scotland, Scandinavia, maybe places like Switzerland or even MLS, dunno. There's no shame though in plying your trade in English L1. But at 29 who can blame him for taking the highest wage, wherever that might be.

Maybe a few months with us might put himself in the shop window for another Championship team to take a punt. Oxford even, De Buckingham liked him but Rowett didn't pick him, but he's just been sacked.

I've been one of those calling for Dennis to start with Jatta but I don't think that both playing together works every time and it didn't work against , Chesterfield.

I also think that choosing the same starting eleven every week against different sides can sometimes work in favour of the opposition. Sometimes it's better to keep the opposition guessing.

Modern football is a squad game & sometimes it's better to put some fresh legs out there. Kouhyar always impresses when he comes on. I think heed needs to be given a start.

Maybe worth giving Jatta a rest and starting Dennis supported by Hall against MK Dons.

  • Well that didnโ€™t go to plan did it? A surprisingly lacklustre performance from Notts which is disappointing given their good form of late. I donโ€™t remember a single shot at goal. Unfortunately for Roos both goals can be attributed partially if not wholly to him, for the first goal he pushed the ball straight into the path of their player instead of catching it or at least pushing it to the side and the second goal it looked like he told Jatta to leave it and then fluffed it. He seems to have reverted back to type after impressing lately.

We need a reaction now against MK Dons.

Very annoyed with yesterday. A complete lack of pressing throughout the game, simple passes going astray and not reaching their intended target and a lack of fight and battle. Once, when we tried to break yesterday and Bennetts' 5-yard pass to Dennis found no one because Dennis positioning was poor and another time Bennetts produced a fantastic ball over from the left to the advertising boards on the opposite side.

Another big problem was our continuous launching of the ball forward to McFadzean and Grimes, who's bread and butter is winning aerial duels. Instead of playing through the lines with passes (from which we had forced two early corners) and pressing them, knowing both of them are slow and both of them were both on yellow cards in the first half. This is a combined problem of tactics and player mindset.

This isn't the first time this season we've played like this away from home. We were the same against Barrow, Barnet and Bristol Rovers. Two of them we got away with, because fought and battled. Yesterday we didn't fight. A game with 0 shots on target for the first hour and a game lacking in creative spark and quality, with the game being open for someone to take control of it. A total lack of intensity.

It's these kind of performances that really make me doubt this team. Tsaroulla isn't doing enough at the moment and went walking into centre-midfield for their first goal. A lack of quality at wing-back and in goal. That should be the final straw for Kelle Roos. It's also obvious we're in need of a creative midfielder and a striker to challenge Jatta and Dennis.

Did you know, Boxing Day
Is a day on which they football play;
I don't know, if we'll win

A point gained against the league leaders who are very good defensively. The result keeps Notts great December unbeaten run going.

Those players are

Roos, Macari, Platt, Bedeau, Tsaroulla, Norburn, Iorpenda, Bennetts, Grant, Dennis, Jatta, Jones.

  • I watched on my laptop and once again it was a solid performance from all Notts players. A good team effort against well organised and stubborn opposition.I haven't seen many Notts games this season due to my team playing at the same time but there has been a definite improvement recently.Players that I found a bit disappointing earlier in the season are now performing at a much higher level and playing for the team. This makes it very difficult to pick out one single player.I will add that Jodie Jones seems to be very low on confidence at the moment but I'm sure he will sort himself out sooner rather than later.I agree with above comments regarding how many players deserve being voted for but I have chosen Lorpenda.
