B Team Report | Wanderers 2 Notts County 0 | Bolton Wande...

Fit-again Gale on target as first-team men help Whites to Central League win

I think that Notts have to improve the communication. Having to rely on an opponent for a B Team match report is a poor show.

I've tried to find out what the Notts line up was but it's still not available on the website except the score. I think it's important to know what the team sheet was for the match, & to be able to read a brief match report from a Notts perspective.

In a tricky round, well done to our winner @super_ram, who nailed his joker. Incidentally, it was his team who messed up my joker by failing to hold on to a two-goal lead. There is truly no justice in this world 😉

In our leaderboard, @4everapie remains top, with all the top four staying unchanged and @super_ram the big mover this week...

That's us done for another week, I'll post next Saturday's fixtures on Wednesday as usual. Thanks for playing and have a good week!

Maybe a debut for #Notts next Saturday?

If Clubs don't give young players an opportunity to show what they can do at a higher level they can easily miss out on something special.

Alex Ferguson was a big proponent for giving young players a chance & the rest as they say is history.

Good morning it’s a lovely bright start to the day but a tad chilly at only 3 degrees. 🥶

We are going to wrap up and go for a walk, we need a few bits from Morrisons so we’ll do a circular route to get our daily step target.

How is everyone? What does the day have in store for you?

  • It's been raining all day here, but it's a little bit milder of late. The England Cricket team lost their first Test match against Australia in Perth in just two days after dominating the match for until after lunch on the 2nd day.

Then Notts put in a poor performance today so the sports news is matching the Weather. Things can & will get better first thing tomorrow morning.

It was raining most of the night here & it is still very overcast and heavy.

There was a some brightness at the end of the day with our local sport when Nottingham Panthers beat their arch rivals, Sheffield Steelers 4-3 in a top of the table Elite League match. Panthers are top of the table.

My local Football team AFC Mansfield beat Newark Town 5-1

Last night around dusk we were lucky enough to spot a barn owl hunting in the fields we overlook, an awesome sight, it got quite close to the cottage so we had a great view.

It rained very heavy during the night and early this morning here in Flamborough but by mid morning it had stopped and the skies cleared.

We’ve been a walk around Bridlington, we parked on the front and the walked along the promenade to the harbour, obviously most things are shut and consequently it’s very quiet, on the way back to our cottage we stopped off at Tesco and got some lamb shanks for dinner tonight. Yum.

  • I don't think that Macca will ever return to Notts apart from being an interested spectator. I'm actually happy with what we have & Notts now play a little different to accommodate Jatta.

Changing mid season to accommodate Langstaff would be a backward step in my opinion. I think we would be getting a tall strong striker in January to back up Jatta & Dennis.

I think we may see Macaulay Langstaff back at Notts, but I think he will still have a few seasons trying to establish himself at Championship/League One level. It might be worth it for him to find the right League One team to achieve this, as gaining promotion with a team would make it easier for him to settle back into the challenge of playing at his highest level.

However, I don't think Peterborough United are the right team.

I don't think Luke Williams will have it all that easy, and his position may quickly come under fire. Swansea fans didn't really rate him, and when this type of success comes from a manager who only has experience with a team like us, well, it quickly becomes a case of "he's not good enough."

I wish Williams well; Peterborough are massively underachieving, but they have some major issues which are embedded deep within the team. I don't think Williams will be able to do it alone; he will need the fans support too.

Can't recall where I saw it, but Peterborough's requirements in a striker means that he's too old as much as Williams wants him there. Might be the same for JJ as well. Peterborough are known for their approach to transfers and have to tick a large upsell metric to their purchase in the first instance.

Langstaff needs to drop down and then underperform to ever come back to Notts. Given he's 28, he's in his prime years and really needs to hit it running with another club or be at risk of becoming nomadic.

Harrison Iwunze & Theo Robinson have joined Kettering Town on loan. Good luck to them both.

  • Thanks for this info about Jack Hinchy's situation @theAnticlough . I think Notts should be looking to bring him back, but I suppose he couldn't be included in the squad because Notts have already named their squad. For me, he's as good as it not better than Norburn in the central midfield role.

Jack has made 25 appearances for Notts in a season where Notts made the playoffs. Sitting on a bench or not even making the bench for Altrincham is not a good look.

Yeah, the loan was the right idea, just hasn't worked out. Hinchy is quite a cultured player and we know how frantic the NL can be. A club has to have patience with a player like that because when he finds his feet he'll add control to your play. Obviously, Alty didn't have patience but Hinchy is more likely to be an EFL player than whoever they're playing ahead of him.

Merit might be in favour of JH coming back and taking Norburn's spot on the bench, but in terms of contracts or politically it might not be something MP wants to do. We might be getting into the reasons RobGag left there

I hope they can both force their way into their starting line up and do well.

Edit - Turns out Kettering aren’t in the National League North, their google profile says they are but it’s wrong, they are one level below in Southern Prem. Bit of shame, the standard is lower but I guess the trade off will be that they should be guaranteed more minutes.

On Saturday Notts welcome Colchester United to Meadow Lane.

How many links can we find between the clubs, players, managers, coaches etc.

My starter for ten is Liam Chilvers who played for Notts on loan in 2001-2002 making 9 appearances and scoring 1 goal, he played for Colchester between 2003 and 2006 making 113 appearances scoring 3 goals. He turned up at Notts again in 2010-2012 and made 38 appearances with no goals. (Source Wikipedia)

Can you spot a link between Notts and Colchester?

  • Introducing PON's Lightweight Fluid theme.

    pon-lightweight-fluid.png

This is designed to help members, with the navigation moving from the top to the left side. The theme will see some tweaks to improve the UI as we go along, but I am pleased to say all members have the option to choose it.

With the side navigation, it gives a clearer look into the pages that the Pride of Nottingham has to offer.

To accompany the alternative means of finding content, such as our dashboard, topicfeed, all activity, and various content streams, which you can even customise to your desire.

The community index page becomes a beautiful, fluid design, which brings all the content into a single location. Much like the dashboard, items are spotlighted and featured, but in the right sidebar, you have the power to toggle off various forums. This means you can personalise your experience and focus on what really gets you communicating.

However, I strongly encourage members to browse and go outside of their habits; please don't cut off a section, never to read the topics inside, because you never know what they might miss. We are a community that thrives when people feel at home to share things, and despite us being a Notts County fan site, we are foremost a community.

How do you use the fluid theme?

So what are your takeaways from the draw against Harrogate?

In my opinion, Notts did well to force the draw in the end after a spirited & hard working Harrogate performance.

Notts continue to struggle against sides that employ a high press & sit back & challenge Notts to break them down. Martin Paterson is the latest Notts Coach that is faced with this.

Kudos to Paterson for changing things in the 2nd half & the substitutes did make a difference to the intensity of the Notts play.

It is clear that Jatta needs support upfront with players that can link up with him. I think Martin may have learned a lot from the first & second halves of the Harrogate match.

I think that we may see more of Dennis, Jarvis & Kouhyar featuring in the starting eleven & it is clear that Matt Palmer is very important to Notts in the centre of Midfield.

  • Will Jarvis gave it a good go and showed some promise, but he’ll need more time to earn regular minutes ahead of Keanan Bennetts and Nick Tsaroulla when they’re playing well. They’ve got the edge when they’re in form.

It was nice to see Jarvis back in action. His biggest challenge seems to be lasting the full 90 minutes. That might sound a bit harsh, and I know some people rate him, but he’s a different kind of player when he comes off the bench. He brings more energy in short bursts.

Notts did most things right against Harrogate. It was a tense game and you could see how easily someone might have been sent off out of frustration. Matthew Dennis was lucky not to be punished for that push after his penalty. The Harrogate player did barge into him and looked like he said something, but Dennis still took a risk.

My take is that I hope Saturday’s performance is the kick up the backside the team needed. Let’s face it, we should have won that game easily. Hopefully now, they will be back on it this weekend as Colchester will make it even more difficult than Harrogate did.

This documentary is on Sky Documentaries at 8.00 pm tonight.

It tells the story of Russell King and the Munto takeover of Notts County.

It should be a good watch.

  • It’s an incredible story, Russell King was/is a very clever man, he even managed to dupe heads of government, he lived a lavish lifestyle on other people’s money ruining people’s lives along the way, the trail even went as far as North Korea when he took Sven with him to try and set up a minerals deal. The take over of Notts County was only a small part of what he was involved in.

It’s a shame he used his talents in such a nefarious way. It’s well worth a watch if you get chance.

The issue is that it's becoming almost as fictional as "Catch Me If You Can" and the whole Frank Abagnale, Jr, story.

I watched Panorama ages ago where they tracked down Russell King, but most of the stories on Munto are becoming quite fictional, and people are taking liberties to embellish what actually happened. I can't say Sky's is, but this is my general thought.

  • Harrogate boss night be frustrated but he would be wouldn't he. He didn't seem to be frustrated about his side wasting time or the other fouls in the penalty area that Harrogate got away with.

Notts were worth their point for their 2nd half display, & if Notts has taken their chances, they would have won the match at a canter.

That was a bit of a hard watch. Even in the second half, when we showed more urgency, we barely tested their goalkeeper at all. It's always difficult when the opposition is as compact as Harrogate were, but of all the crosses we put into their box, we were first to very few of them. As for the penalty, I thought Jarvis played for it at first, but on viewing the replay the Harrogate player had his hand on his back (and must have been pushing, otherwise he wouldn't have gone down with him). I missed the big handball shout on PiesPlayer and they didn't show a replay, so i can't comment on that.

Jatta, Hall and Tsuroulla had a quiet day. I thought Bennetts did OK, but nobody was really attacking his crosses. If Grant had taken his early chance first time instead of taking an extra touch, it could have been a very different game.

Harrogate deserved to take something from that game simply because of the spirit they showed with their backs to the wall, but from our point of view that game was winnable. At least we rescued a point.

It was a very frustrating game, but that said, I don't think either team played badly. Harrogate might have been fortunate to capitalise on some horrific defending, and to concede from trying to defend is both ironic for us and a highlight of just how much more aware we should be in key stages of games. You can say it was a fluke deflection, or just that Notts were unlucky, but who was paying attention?

Kelle Roos couldn't do much more, considering it put Harrogate clean through, and all this, "Alex Bass" would have saved it. I am sorry, we need to move on and accept Roos is a totally different keeper.

Notts had chances to win the game, and I won't mention the number of appeals for a penalty.

I think Tyrese Hall had a good effort and should have done better in the first half, but shot straight at James Belshaw. We had 13 shots; only 3 of those were on target, and maybe on a different day we would have scored more, but we have to make the chances count for something. Harrogate wasn't all that great defensively; their time-wasting antics were as blatant as day is long.

Even Belshaw became a wind-up merchant, but that will be overlooked because he supports Notts.

Very well deserved 👏

  • Great news to start the weekend, he's been really good since returning to the side. It's great to actually be in a position now where we are renewing contracts before the end of the season too, means we definitely won't lose him on a free as I'm pretty sure League 1 sides would've been interested in him.

I wonder if we in talks with any other players whose contract is up at the end of the season? 🤔 Tsaroulla and Platt will be out of contract next year...

It's hard to imagine Notts without Scott Robertson in the team, since he joined he really has become a permanent fixture in the squad, and although he has had spells out of the squad through injury and occasionally being rested or dropped.

There is no denying how important it is to get a player like him committed to the club for a longer period of time.

Obviously, it doesn't mean he will see out the contract as a Notts player, but it shows the importance the club sees in him to extend the deal beyond a year or two. The deal will give Robertson peace of mind and allow him to focus on his football.

    Just now, Robbie said:

Notts are the form team in the League so both have an excellent chance of getting these coveted award's. Good luck to both of them.

I just hope it doesn’t put a curse on us as these awards often do, how many times have we seen manager of the month lost the next few games.

Nominations like this, it's always a sign of progress and promise. I am pleased for both Martin Paterson, and Alassana Jatta.

I think Martin Paterson is the type of person that would scare off any potential voodoo or curse, I mean, just his stir alone is enough to know he's not to be messed with.

Did anyone watch this match, it was crazy. Scotland need a win to qualify for the World Cup.

Scotland went 1-0 up early on with a great bicycle kick goal from McTominay, Denmark equalised with a pen in the second half, a dubious decision after a foul which was deemed to be just inside the box, after a lengthy wait for var.

Denmark had a player sent off for a second yellow and Scotland went 2-1 up, 4 minutes later on 82 mins Denmark equalised again. In 90+3 minutes Scotland went ahead 3-2, then on 90+8 mins with Denmark chasing an equaliser and Kasper Schmeichel out of his goal, McLean scored from 35 yards. To put Scotland through to the World Cup finals.

What a match.

This was an absolute joke of a decision by the referee. The Danes will rightfully be fuming

Yes it was, I think it’s time VAR was allowed to intervene on a second yellow card, it was never a foul and that of course had a huge bearing on the game.

Notts have been on the end of some horrendous refereeing decisions & they continue to happen., but unfortunately that's a part of football.

Even though we have to put up with these questionable decisions I still wouldn't like to see VAR being introduced to League 2 matches.

VAR makes mistakes too because at the end of the day, VAR still has to rely on officials making the final decision & we have seen terrible decisions made in spite of VAR .

Scotland deserved their victory & I'm pleased that they will be going to the World Cup.

Wales have a great chance of qualifying too, & they will play at home in their playoff semi final against either Albania, Bosnia, Kosovo or Republic of Ireland.

Shock horror yesterday, when Jake (@super_pie) noticed that the bar opening up across from the Navi is going to be Forest's fan zone. A bit bizarre of a placement for it. It was even confirmed by one of the bouncers of the Navi, that the cleared out area to the side is where it's going to be.

I am not all that bothered, but I do think the location is daft and I fail to see how it will be any better than 'The Nest'.

Surely, there's closer land that could be put to better use?

The Academy pre season continues tomorrow with two matches.

Saturday is once again prediction league day - you know what to do! All the matches kick off at 3pm (or 3:03 pm in the case of the Vauxhall Conference, something about having three promotion spots - outrageous cheek) and you get one joker each. Good luck!

Harrogate came with a game plan & it nearly paid off, but Notts managed to salvage a point and keep their unbeaten run going. Martin Paterson's choice of substitutes made the difference.

So who's your PON Man of the Match for Notts? I have chosen the starting 11 plus 3 substitutes for you to make your choice.

Those players are.

Roos, Macari, Ness, Bedeau, Tsaroulla, Robertson, Iorpenda, Bennetts, Grant, Hall, Jatta, Palmer, Jarvis, Dennis.

  • I agree @Robbie subs can get a man of of the match. We have seen it with England recently. The likes of Jarvis coming on when defenders are tired can make a massive difference. I think in the modern game it's not about the starting eleven any more. The strategy to win a game involves the whole eighteen and the coach shows his skill in knowing when to make the changes. Martin Paterson is doing just that for me.

Hard one to call, the defence wasn’t really that tested, they were so high up the pitch second half you would’ve mistaken them for midfielders. And then attack wise we struggled to break them down even though we were camped in their final third for the last 30 minutes of the match.

The subs did make a difference, Palmer did what he does, he even had a shot that went just over (he's going to score this season, I can feel it). Jarvis won us the penalty he looked a tad lacking in confidence in times and he's not played regularly either but it was the right match and time for him for come on.

I agree, if Barry Cotter has been sent back I would be somewhat disappointed because all he needed was a run in the squad to get his fitness levels up. He was in and out, and that seems to impacted his performances but there's clearly a good player there. Whilst I think we have good options in his position, and perhaps he would fall behind, I think he would still be worth keeping but if he was to go back I would understand it.

I would still be disappointed that we never got the most out of him, and his pre-season friendly goal against Cardiff is a clear sign of his quality.

I think pre-season Cotter is just a good way to assess Cotter in general. For every Cardiff goal, a Kaiserslauten stinker. Personally, if we're rid of the wage which was probs a bit too large in our squad given his playing time, I think it's better attributed elsewhere.

It's all been rather disappointing. I also think there's a good player in there if he's given time, but right now he's behind Tsuroulla and Kouhyar in the pecking order, justifiably so in my opinion. It looks like he's going to be a victim of poor squad planning in the summer. I can see him returning to Barnsley soon, them paying up his contract and him reappearing at another L2 club in the very near future.

Notts need to get better with their communication

That depends on whether there's anything to communicate at this stage. It seems likely that Cotter will go back, but that doesn't mean he already has.

It does feel like we are lacking when it comes to right footed wingbacks, as of now Jones, Tsaroulla and Bennetts are probably our top 3 players in these positions and they are all left-footed.

He came on as a sub with about 5 minutes to go in the Crewe match and decided to try and dribble past a Crewe player (as the last defender) on the edge of our box, he lost the ball but we just about won it back and cleared it. It wasn't a great cameo that's for sure and this was his last time he played (over 2 months ago now we've seen him).

I've not heard anything but it's strange he hasn't been part of the squad for a while now, he didn't even make the squad for the Man United Academy Trophy match.

Am I missing something, why do we need a fan shirt? I don’t understand but apparently they’ve sold over 700 so far so fair play it all helps the club.

What are your thoughts?

On Magpie Circle podcast, Paul Mace offered the explanation that it was to be the 3rd kit this season but the EFL enforced an obscure ruling that shirts cannot have 2 different club emblems on them. I must admit this seems a tad harsh... and maybe Puma should have been aware of such rules? Hence the shirt being marketed as a Fans shirt.

So a 3rd kit may still be coming?

That sounds logical @Piethagoram if that is the case then I think we can forgive them, it’s certainly sounds like they might have been stuck with a load of shirts that couldn’t be used then some bright spark had the idea of selling them asa “fans shirt”, fair enough.

I’ve never heard of a fans shirt before maybe if lots of fans buy them they’ll do one every season.

Agreed @Piethagoram, that's probably what happened. The shirt certainly looks like it was intended to be worn during matches, with the current badge and sponsor on it.

It looks like this will join the 2009-10 Vandanel shirt (the one Munto ditched for Nike) in the ranks of "Notts shirts that never were". Not one I find appealing, but maybe a curiosity in years to come.

I think this fan shirt is fund-raising for the club one step too far. I am happy to support the the club and buy merchandise to raise funds, but there is a limit to what you can buy and at £50 a shirt and more for families you begin to feel a little bit exploited, especially for something that is not really needed.
