  1. I have stated in  a couple of  comments on PON that I had a Horrible Nagging feeling at the back of my mind that Wrexham might put in a Bid for Macca once the Summer Transfer window opens. Imagine to my Horror  that Wrexham (along Bolton and Peterborough) are thinking of making such a Move. The story comes from the Football League World on line. Is it True or Just Paper Talk? Would Notts let Macca go to Wales if the price was right or wait for a better bid from a Championship Club?  Or hold onto him with the hope his goals will get the Magpies into League 1 next season? It's going to be one Hell of an Off Season. Macca to Wrexham me and my Big Mouth !!

How about Macca to Peterborough for £1m plus Tshimanga?

Now that would be an interesting offer and dilemma! I know his last few seasons haven’t been great since his big injury at Chesterfield. Assuming there are not any lasting effects I’d be very tempted as we'd effectively get a replacement and a lot of money. He just scored 7 goals in 16 games in a struggling Boreham Wood team, I think in our team given the chances we create he would do pretty well.

Peterborough sold Mason-Clark to Coventry for £4.25 Mil so they would be one of the few L1 clubs that could realistically afford him…

He had 40 appearances for 3 clubs last season although only managed more than 45 mins in one game with Fleetwood. With Jatta, Scott and McGoldrick, I'd think it might be a gamble worth taking for a 26 year old. Manage him well and get him firing, but only as a big cash plus deal with Macca. If we can keep Macca, we don't need another striker.

  4. Old Trafford is in serious need of repair. For years I've heard people mention that Old Trafford is run down and in need of serious money being chucked at it but being the big club that they are no one takes notice cause they're a big club and should have a decent backing. These clips say different, just shows how bad it is being run and there is no money being chucked at it.

First it was a food hygiene rating of 1 star now they've got floods in stands and leaky roofs. Old Trafford is a landmark in English football, it was always a place for England to travel to and a place for FA Cup Semi Finals. Such a shame to see it in this state.

How did  the Old Trafford Ground pass it's safety certificate with a large  amount of water falling on seats from a height like that?

  5. Came across this video earlier today explaining why Luke O'Nien was only given a yellow as opposed to a red for a deliberate handball.

What does everyone make of the explanation or the situation?

Should it have been a red card or was the yellow the correct decision?

I find it a tricky one because of the explanation they give as to why it's a yellow by the law of the game and not exactly a clear chance.

However, you have to imagine without the volleyball parry that the opposition player was gonna latch on to it and be in on goal. But also, a handball like that surely warrants a red card.

professional foul all day long, i dont know how anyone could just get a yellow for that. regardless of the area, its blatant hand ball and he did it solely to stop the attack. i fear without strong punishment others could replicate this stupid behaviour.

any form of cheating needs to stamped out severely, but hand balls like this is an easy red for me.

exactly this for it to be a red card.

  6. When the financial accounts of the 2023/24 season are published next year, it will probably show Stockport and Wrexham with the largest financial losses, that have allowed their clubs to have achieved promotion. @Dry Nelson Ray

Mansfield will not be far behind

    1. Robbie

      Robbie

But this is the whole problem with the way the richer clubs are allowed to sustain much larger losses than clubs that don't have a rich benefactor.

That's down to the current FFP rules and if proposed changes to these rules are implemented, it will give richer clubs even more of an advantage.

This again shows the unfairness throughout the football pyramid right from the top.Just look at all the teams at the very top of each league.

It's no surprise that the top four in league 2 are four of the richest in the league.

We know very well that Wrexham for definite and maybe Stockport too, will be challenging for promotion from League 1 next season, and Mansfield will be up their too with arguably, the best Manager.

One silver lining though for Notts. With the right recruitment, Notts should be up there near the top next season, with these four of the  richest clubs gone.

You know, in the grand cinema of sports, success is like that blockbuster hit you get from investing in a killer script, a visionary director, and a cast that brings it all to life. It's not just about any club; it's about making those smart, savvy moves that turn a good story into a legend. Spending wisely to gain promotion is the important factor in trying to gain promotion, notjust throwing money at it and hoping for a hit? That's like expecting a standing ovation for a film you shot on your phone. Ipswich's climb up to the Championship is a solid win, a real testament to the team's hard work and strategy. And Luton Town's step into the Premier League? It's a significant moment, marking a return to the top flight after a long time. It's these kinds of achievements that add depth to the game's narrative, quietly reminding us why we love it.

    1. Robbie

I would class Aaron as a winger rather than a midfielder. He has been expected to play as a wingback on the right hand side, but his defending is the weakest part of his game, just like it is with Jodi Jones.

I believe, just like Jodi, he is worth his place in the side just as a winger, but we need good quality defenders behind both of them.

  7. I wonder where we’d be now and what we’d be doing if those people hadn’t met in the George Hotel? We’d probably all be supporting the other Nottingham team. 😪

Hello - sorry to bump this up but I've been doing some research on football club foundations, mainly because some clubs (Stoke/Palace) are trying to claim a much older history than is warranted.

It got me looking into County's foundation, and I found something interesting.  The 28 November 1862 newspaper article mentioned on the club's website is not about Notts at all.  It's about a Sheffield club, Milton, formed out of a cricket club.  There's no chance of a typo - the Sheffield Daily Telegraph carries an advert about the match the previous Saturday.

The confusion seems to be that it was held at Cremorne Gardens, but not the road in Nottingham as the Nottm Guardian claims; it was an area later called the Orphanage and Milton played there through the 1860s.  Sheff Weds also played there in 1867.

I'm guessing that someone saw the claimed 1862 date, looked back in the newspapers for that year, found that football match, and assumed it involved County.  But the minutes from 7 December 1864 (as reported in 1925) state definitively that the Notts Foot Ball Club is being formed then and there, and it did not exist in 1862.

No idea where the 1862 date comes from other than there are claims for 1860, 1862, 1863, and 1864 in the various yearbooks...

At least the 1864 date does not affect the oldest professional club record (Stoke's claim is rubbish and Palace's does not even get THAT high) but it does add a slight twist.

So does anyone have any better evidence for there being a club - rather than occasional kickabouts - for the players who would eventually form the Notts club?

      Hi @R H and welcome.

Quoted from the Notts County website.

"Notts County Football Club, now universally recognised as the world's oldest Football League club, was formed in 1862.

Official formation followed two years later as the 'Notts. Foot Ball Club'

      ".

    4. R H

      R H

Hi, Robbie, and thanks.  The concern I have is that some of this might be retconning because the 1862 date was accepted but the club's own papers said 1864, so there was an attempt to reconcile the two by saying the club existed unofficially before its proper formation.  But the more likely thing is that it was ACTUALLY formed in 1864 and that 1862 is an oft-repeated mistake.

Hence I wonder if there is something from before December 1864.  If there was anything beforehand they would have been playing between themselves, the nearest opponents would have been in Sheffield or Lincoln.  And newspaper reports were mostly drawn up by club secretaries who would send them in.  So the odd kickabout would not be something anyone would formally report.

But footballs were expensive.  The equivalent today of £50.  That's a lot to lay out for a kickabout - plus they would not be available locally.  That would be quite a commitment.

Maybe any memoirs?  Someone saying they had been playing for a couple of years before finding out there were like-minded souls up the road and deciding to form a club?

I can't see the 777 takeover going ahead. There's something not sitting right with the whole thing. I feel like the inevitable will happen and Everton will enter administration.

You'd have thought that a club like Everton would have a queue of buyers lining up to take them out of this mess.

The mismanagement must be pretty epic to be threatened with administration despite all the money PL clubs get. If they really are delaying going into administration to avoid a points penalty, isn't that a bit problematic? Delaying insolvency proceedings is a criminal offence in some countries.

All the same, if they do go into admin, they'll certainly get bought by someone. They're a huge club with a brand new stadium ready to move into. Perfect for a glorious new era.

Timing of this scenario is a real issue to me. A further points deduction this season could see them relegated but delaying it to next season, they then just hope to remain in the PL and make up the lost points

  8. This is incredibly powerful, we all need a hug sometimes.

  9. Ten wins in a row for Doncaster. 30 points in ten matches. Top of the form table They find themselves in fifth place and now have a playoff place in their own hands.

They could easily go all the way in the playoffs and get promoted to league 1 the way they are playing.

And another thing. Notts have the double over them too.

Crewe made a remarkable comeback tonight and they won 2:0 on the night to make it 2:2 after normal time

The match went to extra time but it remained 2:2 after the extra time.

So we had the drama of the penalty shootout and Crewe won it 4:3 to book themselves a trip to Wembley where they will play Crawley of MK Dons.

Interesting Stats from the transfer markt website

They have Macaulay's value at £400K. I think that figure is grossly undervalued.

Another interesting statistic is that he had scored 19 goals in all competitions up to 31 December 2023 and 10 goals scored from 1st January 2024

I suspect there may be a few clubs in for him during the summer. Heard a few rumours floating round during the season and they're doing the rounds again.

My site manager at work, who's a Birmingham fan, said that Langstaff's name was shouted and mentioned a lot to the board of Birmingham City.

Hopefully we can retain him and he carried on banging the goals in. His scoring tally is something to be admired and I still believe there's more to come.

  12. My Notts County performance of the season was away against Bradford City.

Notts had a poor pitch to contend with as well as a decent Bradford side still challenging for a play off space.

The Bradford home game, first half, was great too. I’ll go for the Morecambe 5-0 win at home, completely dominated them.

And it's mad that we did the double over Doncaster and they looked like the poorest team in the division. Yet now they are one game away from Wembley. And it might sound it, but I’m genuinely not being bitter here, but I think both them and Crawley (assuming they don’t fall apart in the second leg) will struggle in L1. But good luck to ‘em!

  13. Just a reminder to everyone that today is the 79th anniversary of VE day when the Country celebrated it's victory over the Nazis.

It's a day in which we are reminded that it is always worth fighting to keep our freedom from those who wish to take it away.

  14. And now, the end is near. And so we face the final curtain. My friends, I'll say it clear, I'll state my case, of which I'm certain: this is the FINAL prediction league round for this season. The games all kick off at 3pm on Saturday, and you get a joker each. Now predict them your way :D

I've got to disappoint you @Megan_Elizax, I've decided I'm going to win next season, and I count the points. But maybe second place is up for grabs if you throw @ARLukomski's laptop in a river or something? :D

I've got something for the stattos / sad anoraks among you. I counted the points separately for the second half of the season and this was the result. Apart from our two new entrants, @william1984 was the only player to get more points in the second half of the season than in the first. @Harry Buckley only actually played 18 rounds - over 23 rounds he'd have got about 95 points, putting him in the top four.
