  • Dreadful.

But that awful first-half set the tone. Hearing that we couldn’t even win the 4th ball in our own penalty area sums it up. Then suddenly you think we’re going to get something when it gets 2-1 but we just implode. It’s been the tale of our season, just when you think we’re about to string a run of wins together we drop an absolute clanger.

And when you lose like that it feels as if all the good work from the last 4 games has come undone. If we’d lost 2-1 we’d have bemoaned the poor first half cos second half (up until about 70 mins) we had some chances. But to just get done like that, I thought we were over that kind of performance. We’re lucky Grimsby drew and Boreham Wood’s shocking run just continues, but in terms of the bigger picture of promotion, after today you can’t help but think it’s a big ask.

    Good post

Sorry for the downtime, everyone.

PON got stuck in a loop for some reason, which brought the website down due to it requiring an important update. However, I wasn't able to resolve this issue in a timely manner. The upgrade process had to be completed manually, with our themes also needing to be re-added - the site should be working as intended.

Apologies for not noticing sooner, plus thanks to @Dripsey3 for informing me.

We've hit round 40, but there are 189 points still to play for. These matches kick off at 3pm on Saturday, and you have a joker each!

Barnsley v Reading

Cardiff City v Swansea City

Accrington Stanley v Cheltenham Town

Plymouth Argyle v Oxford United

Newport County v Exeter City

Stevenage v Oldham Athletic

Aldershot v Eastleigh

Chesterfield v Grimsby Town

  • Great result, and I'm liking this defensive grit we seem to have gained recently. Winning headers in our box, putting bodies on the line, it all bodes well for a strong finish to the season if we can keep it up. Maybe we're getting a bit of luck too as if that pen had gone in 2-1 makes it a very different game. But credit to Jaros for reading the pen and making the save.

A home semi-final doesn't seem out of reach now especially with teams in the top 7 still having to play each other, it's got to be the aim.

And that also puts Ruben level on league goals with Woots now, both have 15. I think he might finish as our top scorer too.

Great result that. We had a little bit of luck at the right times, but that's part of the game and will help us build some momentum. The top three is very much possible, but we can hardly afford to slip up if we want to get there - we might be only 4 points off, but Halifax, Wrexham and Solihull all have at least one game in hand.

For those who are interested in watching on Wednesday Evening...

Come on Lloegr!

It’s also just dawned on me that Connell Rawlinson is Welsh, I’m surprised he wasn’t selected for Wales C.

The transfers to and from clubs at this level has quickened the past week or so, with the play-off final having been played and contract renewals well under way. Some of the transfers are quite interesting and relevant for us too. In no particular order:

Torquay

A number of their fans well and truly throwing their toys out of the pram because we signed Cameron, which is probably a good indicator for us. Some strange delusions of grandeur in that fan base, probably because they reached the play-off final and are most likely hurting after throwing the league and then losing the playoff final thanks to a couple of dodgy refereeing decisions.

They look set to lose Ben Whitfield (Central midfielder/left winger) as his contract is up and he's yet to sign. To whom though is unknown. There has been those on social media trying to say he will sign for us. That'd send Torquay fans into complete meltdown I'd imagine, but more likely to go to the league I think (Bradford rumoured).

Ben Wynter has re-signed (RB), as has Dean Moxley (LB with the long throw), Asa Hall (CB and captain) and Danny Wright. Wynter is only young (23), but the rest, despite having great seasons, are all well into their 30s.  They'll be hoping Aaron Nemane signs a new contract (injured winger).

Joe Lewis and Connor Lemonheigh-Evans are still contracted, both young and quality players at this level. Not sure on Torquay's financial situation, but those two would require a fee of some sort.

Lucas Covolan Cavagnari, the keeper who scored and did the antics in the penalty shootout in the play-off final, has joined Port Vale (midtable L2 last season).

A number  of signings for them to make, but they haven't made any thus far. Not a complete rebuild, but I imagine they were hoping to keep their entire squad together but as we found out the season before, that just doesn't happen.

With Brindley being out for around 6 weeks we've bought in some defensive cover and it's a familiar face in Sam Graham, but I do wonder if he was second choice ????

According to reports we’ve been unsuccessful in our attempts to sign Geraldo Bajrami from Kidderminster, a young centre back and former Birmingham City U23 captain who's played international football for Albania's U21s.

The prediction league continues this week (minus that silly Championship nonsense, as they're all playing internationals apparently). If you fancy taking part, I'll have your predictions for these eight gritty lower-league fixtures by 3pm on Saturday, and don't forget your jokers!

AFC Wimbledon v Cambridge United

Shrewsbury Town v Lincoln City

Crawley Town v Rochdale

Port Vale v Sutton United

Salford City v Walsall

Grimsby Town v Dagenham & Redbridge

Maidenhead United v Barnet

Yeovil Town v Southend United

  • Am I happy with a point? No, but I'm satisfied. I'd take 5 points from this and our next 2. Then we have 7 games against lower half sides to finish the season. We should make the playoffs, I think it will be a 3rd place finish.

For a so called derby game I thought the first 20 minutes were quite tame, Chesterfield just let us have the ball and when they did get it we didn't want to tackle them! That goal was bad and Whittle was just able to stroll into the box completely unmarked. Then for the equaliser watching in real time I thought it was a nailed on pen. Having seen the replays it's soft, he retracts his leg but his momentum takes him into Ruben. When you dive in the penalty area you're asking for trouble though. We had some nearly moments but the first half was a bit meh...

Second half was better the tempo was quicker but weirdly for us I thought we lacked numbers in our attacks sometimes and we took another touch when we could've had a shot. How Woots missed the header I don't know. Should we have got some fresh legs on upfront for the last 15? Nemane and Sam combo, would that have worked? Who knows. Still had a few ffs moments when we dallied on the ball a few times and nearly gave Chesterfield a goal. Asante's miss was almost as bad as Woots, luckily he was not on it for a lot of that game.

7 points from 9, I'll take that, so called big games out the way (until the play-offs at least) can we finish the season unbeaten now though ????

Thought Arter was poor on Saurday, looked to be carrying an injury and his corners were a real struggle. As for the game, it was a fair result, but thought we could have won it. Wootton's miss was an even bigger one that Asante's for me and he should have buried it. Miller hit the post but I thought Slocombe had it covered as it was right in front of me. Other than that it was a game of few chances and the keepers were only really troubled by a couple of deflected shots and Rubens mishit drag back shot.

Next two games are biggies and as @menzinho says, I would definitely take 4 points from them.

I am sorry, but in terms of defensive marking, this is truly awful. It is the reason we will not go up

An "Oscar" from Ruben saved the day:

Game 35 - The Wood (H)

Team: Boreham Wood

Date: 22/03/2022

Where: Meadow Lane

I think the teams in 5th to 10th are battling it out for 2 playoff places. Borehamwood are 1 point ahead of Notts and have 2 games in hand. Borehamwood are out of form going into this game. They haven't won in their last 4. It's probably the best time to play them. I think Notts will win this and that will go a long way towards securing a playoff spot.

Should have won by a greater margin really, but a win is a win and (shock, horror ????) a clean sheet as well! I would still like to see the squad strengthened further for the run in, but Arter (as expected) is taking the Mick in this division. Far too good and should be unbelievable once fully fit. We have played our best football all season with 3 at the back and probably need to continue that way. If that means shoehorning Cal Roberts into the side or benching him, so be it.

P.S. Really pleased for Sam Slocombe last night, thought he had a good game.

Over in the Bundesliga, Hertha Berlin are struggling despite a lot of investment. They've sacked another manager and appointed Felix Magath, a retired manager with a fearsome reputation in the game for making players run long distances in training. Magath has also brought in his own assistant manager, none other than ex-Notts midfielder Mark Fotheringham!

And that's not all - with Magath suffering from covid symptoms, it was Fotheringham who took charge of the team for yesterday's home game against TSG Hoffenheim, overseeing a 3-0 win. He topped off a good day's work by taking his post-match interviews in German (not always a given with British managers and players in Germany, sadly) and berating a reporter for asking idiotic questions about Braveheart. I was expecting him to pop up in Germany again (he was sacked as Ingolstadt assistant manager earlier this season), but not in the Bundesliga at a club like Hertha. Pretty random.

It's round 38 and we're entering the final furlong now - if you want to win the league, finish in the top three or if there's just someone else you'd like to beat, now is the time! I'll have your predictions in by 3pm on Saturday please, and you have a joker each!

Bristol City v West Bromwich Albion

Swansea City v Birmingham City

Oxford United v Ipswich Town

Portsmouth v Wycombe Wanderers

Barrow v Carlisle United

Sutton United v Tranmere Rovers

Barnet v Woking

Jaros 7 had to pull off a near post save towards the end to preserve the 3 points

Brindley 6.5 Steady in defence Subbed at H/T

Rawlinson 3.5 Burchnall ball found wanting. Terrible pass led to the Dagenham goal. Just not comfortable striding forward with the ball

Lacey  7 Thumping header for 1-1. Subbed at H/T

Chicksen 6 Steady

Richardson 6.5 Great run to create the winner

Arter 6 A bit rusty but cool head at times

Vincent 4 Early promise seems to have evaporated

Palmer 5.5 Tidy, but no real cutting forward passes

Mitchell 3.5 Apart from one good flick to Richardson, just looks lost in a positional sense

Wootton 6.5 Much more involved than of late

Subs

DKE 6.5

Sam 4.5

Francis 4.5

I hope you've all got time for a quick midweek prediction league round. All of these fixtures kick off at 7.45pm on Tuesday night, and don't forget your jokers!
