Rewind to 2015, when every community member, including Granny, loved to take potshots at @super_ram.

The voice-over for @Fan of Big ToneΒ still makes me laugh. ????

A bit of banter from me at times with Super too, oh how I miss these days, but all good things should leave a smile.

Some more nostalgia. It's a pity we have lost a few on the way, heavenly thoughts to Granny Pie too

It's one of the saddest elements of running a community, the likelihood of learning about a member who posts but isn't known in person. Such as @Who r ya?? You Pies!!. I don't want to come across as over sentimental, but I spent ages trying to find out if he was okay. I had the feeling something had happened, and it wasn't about posting - more about paying respect.

@anonypie, also is someone who might not have been as active, but was always helpful when needed.

She was the kind of lady that brought people together, and I miss our exchanges of emails. There are a few others who, have sadly passed on. @stewartpotΒ tended to read the site a lot, I loved his character. You could never feel down around him, because he was too lively for that. @GrannyPieΒ loved the community, as much as me, she the care she offered to the younger members I feel will never be matched.

One day, we might see some of the old faces return. I don't know, but I think the community element has grown stronger.

i am looking forward to seeing what the future holds for pon, the community always welcomes people back and the main thing is just to enjoy the site. i think the way things are the only way is up.

Well that's a surprise half way through a Notts match

Adam Chicksen has signed for Woking on loan.

  • It had the writing on the wall, unfortunately, he would be destined to play as a centre back and would virtually never be given a chance in his proper position due to the options we have. I think this is a deal more to make sure Adam Chicksen gets game time, and is happy with that because I think his career at Notts is now over.

He can't be a bench player at his age, so I respect that he has gone out to Woking. I think he's better than that standard, but it's difficult to see him getting the minutes here.

Chicksen is a good player. He's probably fairly comfortable being a L2 fullback.

    Β

The issue is he doesn't really fit into our system. He's not really physically dominant enough to be a starting LCB, but he's also not attacking enough to be a wing back in the way we play.Β

Wrexham Manager Phil Parkinson dies and goes to Heaven. He's been up there for a couple of days, when Jesus approaches him.

Hey Phil says Jesus, there's a match this coming Saturday, the All Saints XI vs The Arch Angels, and the Angels need a Coach. Do you Fancy the job?

Sure replies Phil. Oh wait a minute Macaulay Langstaff isn't up here is he?

No. He's still down on Earth playing his Football. Any way I'm managing the All Saints and we're playing in Black & White Stripes while your guys will be in Red Shirts states Jesus.

Well Saturday comes and Phil's Angels are Crushing it, 80 minutes on the Clock and the Arch Angels are 4-0 up, then Jesus makes a Substitution and player comes on to the Pitch in his Black & White Shirt with the number 9 on the back. He seems vaguely familiar to Phil. Anyway the number 9 plays Amazing Football and scores 5 goals and at the Final Whistle, the All Saints have won 5-4. Old Phil can't believe it, then it Dawn's on him the All Saints number 9 is Macaulay Langstaff. So of he goes to find Jesus .

Oi shouts Phil I thought you said Macca was down on Earth playing his Football?

And so he is replies Jesus.

Oh Yeah What about your Number 9 then?

Jesus smiles and says Oh That's God. He Just thinks He's Macaulay Langstaff.

Notts are one point behind the league leaders. They have scored 17 & only conceded 9.Β

Williams had conceded 19 goals at the same stage last season.

Have faith. Stuart will work it out. He's done quite a lot to improveΒ  the team already.Β

That's all well and good if I was giving Maynard a rating for the season.Β

I wasn't. It was for this one particular game.

    25 minutes ago, Super_Danny_Allsopp said:

Yeah, Cundy did alright when he came on in the position he did. The rating for doing pretty much alright is a 6, which is why he got it. Did you think he did something wrong to warrant him being knocked down to a 4?

The rating for doing arlight is a standard 6? Even though he didn't do much, it's that alone that comes across as being biased because he didn't do much at all. Nothing to leap any praise, if we voted people ratings based on being out of position so highly, for little to no involvement it just seems a bit unfair.

His presence pretty much helped Port Vale's defence, he wasn't any sort of a threat. The single pass he mase, was worse than the one Josh Martin made which didn't go to his intended target. It broke down what was a promising attack, his flicking header, someone more natural would have tried to direct towards goal, instead of back without any awareness in hope someone in our colours would get onto it. The 4, I would give him reflects being played out of position.

    25 minutes ago, Super_Danny_Allsopp said:

Not sure I can be accused of being biased against Martin. It's the first time I've seen him play. Unless I have a passionate dislike for Martins. He didn't take on his man, lost the ball twice whilst doing fairly mundane tasks and generally looked pretty useless. Maybe 1 is harsh, but it wouldn't be above a 3.

I'm not suggesting you dislike Josh Martin, but he was more involved in the game. Yes, he made mistakes but he also contribute somewhat to the game. It wasn't a great performance by him, but the rating of a 2 seems way to harsh.

I would be interested to see Martin's stats from the game, as I don't think he was as bad as "2". Certainly, I wouldn't rate Cundy above him based on being played out of position.

I'm giving a shout out for Sam Austin who has been putting in some excellent performances this season.

Sam will play wherever he is placed in the side by Stuart, & he always does a steady job for the side no matter where he plays.

He'll also chip in with a few goals, & get a number of assists to his name during the season.

I believe Sam is an integral part of the squad & his versatility is going to be invaluable to Notts as the season goes on.

Thoughts?

  • Versatile players are worth their weight in gold to any squad, Sam Austin is one such player and as others have said he vastly underrated, if fans are turning against him then they aren’t true supporters.

Theres a clue in the name β€œsupporter” we support the team and the players in the team.

He's underrated by a fair amount of our fan base, I don't think we can limit what level of ability he has league wise. As, the higher you go up, the more time you get on the ball usually and the less likely you are to be man handled. He does well in that situation, much better than what fans give him credit for. I have seen two opposition players grab hold of his sheet, get in front of him and Sam Austin still managed to get his foot to the ball, only to turn away from them with it.

When he's in the zone, he's a difficult player to play against and does well even when he's played out of position. Play him where he belongs: you will get the best out of him.

He's the hard-working midfielder we have always needed at this level. Remember, Neal Bishop was said not to be good enough for League One, due to his Non League background. He went on to do well in the Championship. I think Austin is far more gifted in ability and technical aspects than Bish.

I don’t understand some of the negative and silly comments directed at Sam Austin on social media. Every season, there seems to be someone who gets targeted by negative fans or those always down. He’s a good player who, on his day, deserves to start and can help us get the right results. You can’t fault his focus or effort, he does a solid job, and that’s all I can ask.

Putting Football Aside For The Moment. Another one of my Interests is Music. Being born in the Late 50's, my teenage years were the 1970's and it's that Era which shaped my Music Listening. So I Thought I will Share with you, who in my opinion are the GreatestΒ  Lead Guitarist, Drummer, Bassist and Vocalist from the 70's onward.

Lead Guitarist Jimi Hendrix. The Greatest without a Shadow of a Doubt, no one before or since has been able to touch Jimi playing an Electric Guitar.

Drummer John Bonham (Led Zeppelin) Bonzo had a Unique style and Incredible Talent.

Bassist Lemmy (Motorhead) Along with his Bass playing his Gravely Vocals gave his Band a Unique Sound.

Vocalist This for me was my most difficult decision.Β  Robert Plant (Led Zeppelin) Eric Burdon (The Animals) Freddie Mercury (Queen) all have or had an Incredible Vocal range, but just Shading the Top Spot for me is Iron Maiden's Bruce Dickinson, who's vocal range can change in an Instant and has helped push Maiden to the Heights of Music Immortality.

Thank goodness I have a small tyre compressor I can attach to my 12 volt connection. Must have a nail in the tyre or something like that.

I'll see if it can be repaired first as it's a relatively new tyre. Not the best way to start a Saturday morning, but things can only get betterΒ

Good Morning. Looks like we had a small amount of rain last night.

Currently, I would offer Oxford City...who play in National League North

The wealth of the country does appear to be concentrated in the South!

  • london is an expensive city, the prices in football will reflect that. it is surprising how they still manage to find fans who can afford to pay for season tickets despite the costs involved in living. it always surpises me how clubs like newcastle who have money now, previously struggled to sign good players. outside of the signings like michael owen and alan shearer.

i guess where wealthy millionaires and billionaires live with always attract owners who can pay the club.

Most clubs do well based on the wealth of the area they’re in. Oxford is a wealthy area, but their club has only benefited from being a good team to watch in the last decade or so. Now, they’re attracting more supporters, and I imagine that helps bring in sponsors, wealthy fans, and makes the club appealing to rich owners.

I think I know what you're getting at now @Piethagoram. The line between the NL North and South is drawn a long way south, but is it really such a new thing? When the Conference had a single division, the feeder leagues were the Northern Premier League, the Southern League and the Isthmian League (for London and the south east) - two southern leagues and one northern league. So you've already got an imbalance there, albeit better hidden than it is today.

Why is this? It could be as simple as population density - there are enough people in Greater London to make a country in its own right, while a big swathe of land north of the M62 is pretty sparsely populated. That's going to impact the non-league football scene too. On top of that, the clubs of the Northern League (for the north east, not to be confused with the Northern Premier League) have often rejected promotion to the wider pyramid as they prefer to stay local, and given the distances involved who can blame them?

Spreading wealth and opportunities throughout the country would address the imbalance in many ways (not just in football), but that's a project spanning generations. In the meantime, I think it might be worthwhile splitting the second tier of the National League into three regional divisions. The clubs are mostly semi-pro after all.

Preparing for next season.

Nottinghamshire have made a new signing.

Pace Bowler, Conor McKerr from Surrey on a three year contract.

  • The game would have been very different without the early goal. It might have put Notts under more pressure, so we need to ensure we can keep possession, play the ball out from the back, and create attacks.

In the second half, we posed no threat at all, and we were quite lucky at times, with Carlisle unable to get past a strong Alex Bass. Defensively, we were solid, and we had some decent chances in the first half to take more shots. A better team would have punished us for how poorly we attacked in the final 45 minutes.

Carlisle are a capable team, but their poor form was evident, especially in their finishing. They should take a lot away from this game and look to improve, but we also need to learn from our performance in the second half.

@Piethagoram I do feel, Carlisle were coming into the game more, but I do agree, the subs made it harde, butt I think had we seen more control - the changes would have found it easier to get themselves up to the speed of play. Once Jevani Brown came on, it looked like every ball was lumped forward and most wasn't near to him. Carlisle really turned things around in the second half.

Watching the highlights, you can appreciate just how good Alex Bass is for us.

With Notts having such a professional set up behind the scenes at Meadow Lane, it can only assure teams like Spurs, that their assets will be properly looked after. With all respect to other League 2 teams, who may lack the set up at Notts, the physicality of the league is a deterrent when putting players out on loan, and can be a concern. But as evidenced with the way Abbott has transitioned seamlessly into the Nott playing system, we can benefit from loaning gifted players from premiership teams who are safe in the knowledge, their asset is well looked after.Β

Β

As the article indicates, albeit speculatively, our track record of assisting premiership teams can only bring mutual, win-win benefits to Notts in the long term.

Β

Yes of course, it would be better to have long term players playing, but remember, the Notts playing system comes first, and whoever is playing that position is there because they can deliver whilst in that role. Bringing with them what it is that the premiership team has identified in them can only benefit Notts.

  • tbh it seems more speculation and we dont know if spurs will want to loan another player our way, its impossible for me to make an opinion on that. i know nothing of the player and i dont really believe tottenham would want to loan another player to the same club that has their academy captain. clubs dont usually loan players in pairs, its quite rare and we only signed ryan yates and jorge grant because they were local to us.

i dont think most academies what to send their players to far either.

i think we would be a good option for clubs to consider loaning players out but i would not say i expect it. as for our own players, i would love to see them play more. if we avoid playing them because we are scared of clubs signing them, surely there is something that can be done when they are signed to a professional deal and are beyond the academy level? even if they still work within it.

Personally think Abbott has struggled a bit since we have played him further forward and hasn’t hit the heights of his first full game for us.

As far as our own Academy players are concerned, Muir will quite possibly be gobbled up to disappear into a Premiership academy and never seen again. We would be powerless to stop it unless Muir himself turns it down. I like Reynolds and would want him loaned out at no lower than NLN level, if not I would rather keep him with the squad. I don’t actually think any of our Academy players should be loaned out though until after the leyland DAF freight Rover Sherpa Van Pappa Johns Pizza trophy campaign is over.

There’s an issue with loaning players; we need them to be at good clubs, at a high level, and where they will actually play. Notts usually has the same clubs where the platform isn’t as strong. Some players might end up at the likes of Boston, but we should be looking at the National League, just below us.

Congratulations @Countyman in becoming a PON Grand Master.

Matty Platt, Scott Robertson, Alassana Jatta, Dan Crowley, Sam Austin, Alex Bass,Β Matt Palmer or Jacob Bedeau.

They is a Strong Rumor coming from the Lane. Let me state Again. This is Just A STRONG RUMOR.

It appears that Jodi Could be OUT FOR UP TO SIX MONTHS.

For the Sake of the Magpies Promotion Hopes, Lets Hope that, that's all it is RUMOR.

The Reluctance of any Official Quote From the Club, Will Only Fan The Flames And Add Strength To The Rumor.

  • Show previous comments  4 more
  • As I said @ChrisΒ the Club should take part of the Blame for these Rumors with their Silence regarding Jodi's injury. How many times have we Fans been told, the injury is being accessed (I think it's three) and with Stuart seemingly trying to tip toe around the question, is how theses Rumors start. The Longer the Fans hear nothing regarding Jodi the moreΒ  likely the Rumors will start and Grow.

As you said it may start out as a Whisper, someone will say they saw Jodi on Crutches that's Bad. Then someone will add Jodi had to go and see a Specialist, then Yeah and Remember it took ages for the Club to tell fans, about Matty Palmer and Cedwyn Scott and look how Bad their Injuries were. Then Jodi's had those injury problems before.Β  Plus Notts have signed that player on loan to cover Jodi's position And that's How the Rumor starts, and gets Embellished more and more. In a situation like Jodi's the Club should announce a Date when they will give the Fans a full and proper up date regarding Jodi's injury and this May stop Rumors flying around.

well the club cant come out and say they dont know, they would want to have all the facts. whatever the media team might say, could only be used in negative peoples blame game. its big news, so they had to handle it well. the issue is those who want to act like they know everything.

i am glad that people like chris wait for the facts, because it shows credibility.

some of the people who repeated rumours might be innocent, as they may have been given false information but at the same time you just cant say anything. i do think its disrespectful towards jodi too.

Those are the thoughts of Former Manchester Untied and U.SA. Goal Keeper Tim Howard. In an Interview Howard has stated that he believes that Pep has Ruined Football by making all Teams believe that they can play, like his Manchester City side Possession Based High Pressing Brand of Football. The Trouble is a Vast Majority of Teams can't play that way. Guardiola has had immense success with his Expansive Style Of Football, however where he has the World Class Players to adapt to and carry out this style of Football poorer Teams haven't. So is this whyΒ  we are seeing more and more Defensive mistakes and Teams giving away silly goals? Because they think they can play Pep ball, when they actually can't?

The arrival of Luke Williams at the Lane saw Notts adapt the Possession High Pressing Brand Of Football, and like City the Magpies were successful playing this type of Football. And whereas Man City had Erling Haaland to score the Majority of their goals, Notts of course had Macca, who was ably supported by Cedwyn Scott.Β  And despite the scoring goals like they were going out of Fashion, Notts also let inΒ  a high amount of Goals. Williams Mantra was OK the Opposition score 4 goals we'll score 5 and so it went on, and on a couple of Very Important occasions the matches against Boreham Wood in the National League Play Off Semi Final and again it the Play Off Final Notts almost came unstuck both times, falling behind in both games and only a Mammoth effort by the Players and William's Man Management skills finally Brought successΒ  back to Lane with Notts returning to the Football League.

A Stroke of Luck or Genius by the Notts Recruitment team saw Macca arrive at the Lane, before Williams had been appointed, but would Notts have been has Successful without Macca's Goals? Maybe Not? So is that the way to Counter and Nullify Pep ball, by taking out his teams Top Scorer? After all City don't seem as Sharp in front of goal when Haaland isn't in the team, but City still win Games because they have players to fill the gap left by Haaland. Where as Teams with a Smaller Players Budget haven't, so out of necessity they have to change their style of play, if they Don't and stick to the same system they then seem to struggle.Β

It would seem that last season Notts kept to the style Williams had so successfully adopted in the National League, and Despite the Thumping by Sutton on the opening day, the Possession type football bought Notts more success and they began winning games, however before Williams made the move to Swansea, the Cracks at Notts were beginning to show as teams had worked out how to Deal with the Magpies style of play and we all Know what Happened then. While still maintaining a Good amount of the style of Football Notts have had success with, new Head Coach Stuart Maynard now has a New Defensive Unit and he's managed to Mix things up and kept the opposition guessing. He may have to change things further, after the injuries to Jatta Scott and Jones have cut the Notts attack down to the Bone.

  • I love the football that Notts play nowadays. When they are on their passing best, it can be very fast and slick.Β

Quick passing movement up front can open up defenses & create chances. But passing from side to side at the back when the opposition has a high press is dangerous & can be costly.

Have you noticed we don't see a lot of offsides nowadays? That's all to do with the passing style that has taken over the game.

I can remember passing teams such as Liverpool, Man UΒ  & Forest in the 60s, 70s & 80s used to pass it around, but most of the time the goalie would punt the ball or kick long from goal kicks most of the time.

I've said it beforeΒ  & I'll say it again. I'd just like Notts to mix it up a bit. Try going long if playing short isn't working. Surprise opponents, don't let them settle combating just one style.

That's why Jatta in the team is so exciting because he gives Notts that extra option to do that.

Right my Fellow PON Members thinking Caps on. What in your Opinion are the Most Famous Words in Football ever said? They could have been spoken by a Player, a Manager/Coach a Radio or Television Commentator. Just a few words or sentences that you ,will always remember about the Beautiful Game. Mine came from when I was a Kid back in the 1960's and the 1966 World Cup Final between England and West Germany and where spoken by BBC Match Commentator Kenneth Wolstenholme and they were:-

There's People On The Pitch, They Think It's All Over. It Is Now.... It's Four.

As Geoff Hurst's thunderous shot hit the back of the West German Net and he completed his Hattrick.

This is etched into my memory when I think of quotes from football. I don't know about anyone else, but I always have the habit of impersonating the commentator who said it by trying to say it exactly like him. I do this most times, I think of it. ????

Also, this one is there too.

I had a similar thing, when Kevin Nolan unfairly criticised me in a press conference because JJ had shared pictures of Liam Noble training, which was sent to him by a friend called Ben Hastings (who sadly passed on from cancer). He referred to me as "Arsenal fan TV" and claimed "He always has his picture taken with the players."

I only have a few pictures, and more are from after Kevin had left Notts.

It was usually Jake and Cal who had pictures with the players, and it wasn't like we bugged them. Just Kevin being a little pathetic about something very minor. He has since apologised, so it's water under the bridge but hate the time I would have happily had a boxing match with him for charity. :rollonfloorlaughing:

  • Conceding within the first two minutes had me fearing the worst, but the lads displayed tremendous heart. Maynard’s halftime talk must have struck the right chords because the second half was significantly better. Sam Austin’s cross for Platt’s equaliser was pure magic.

While a draw might not seem like much, given the circumstances, it’s a point well-earned. The team exhibited grit and determination throughout. It’s a pity the referee didn’t show a red card to their centre-back, though.

I don’t think we missed Jatta as much as we missed Jodi. Both are good players, but McGoldrick just needs a bit more energy around him. Notts played so deep that it was always hard to pass successfully within their half of the pitch. I would have liked to see Notts try to be a bit calmer and a lot more determined to move the ball forward, but I left happy with the point.

It's a lovely morning here plenty of sunshine, no wind but is is a crisp morning.

Did you know that Mansfield was thought to be the centre of Sherwood Forest, & was a stop over for travellers going from Nottingham to Sheffield & Vice Versa?Β There is a plaque in Mansfield town centre marking the spot .

In the time ofΒ Henry II of England, the king visited what is now known as Kings Mill, staying at the home of Sir John Cockle for a night having been hunting inΒ Sherwood Forest. Sir John Cockle was later known as the Miller of Mansfield.

It's a Sunday Morning. Good Morning to all.

It is an overcast start to the day with showers forecast later.

Not much planned for today, didn't get a lot of sleep last night for some reason.

It was a cold night so left one of the gas heaters on.

Did you know, Ed Davey, the Liberal Democrat Party leader was born in Mansfield.
