  1. IFAB are at it again. Personally, I don't think this rule introduction will benefit the game at all. I understand what they're trying to implement but I don't think it's going to work and I can see there being a lot of controversy when it comes into effect.

They've already changed and introduced rules that has made the beautiful game we all love confusing hence why there's a lot of talk in punditry regarding "the letter of the law" like handball and offsides.

The Mail Online clickbaiting again, what a surprise.

I'm not sure what I'd make of this, it's a big change but then red and yellow cards were new once. I can imagine there being confusion over what exactly would merit a blue or a red card. Wouldn't a blue card be less of a deterrent for a professional foul?

On the other hand, I've been at ice hockey matches where sin binned players have to sit alone on a kind of naughty step and it's hilarious.

I wonder what’ll happen if the goalie gets sin binned?

A lot of people have asked the same thing. I'm assuming it'll run like when a keeper gets red and they've used all 3/5 subs so an outfield player goes in net.

  2. Starting from today these rules have come in to place for Goalkeepers during penalty shootouts.

Is it really necessary to make these changes? I mean penalty shootouts are a psychological battle and goalkeepers do whatever they can to win that battle and save the penalty. Especially the part where they say "distract the Taker". Surely that's all part of the battle?

But what about the people taking penalties? Will they put in rules that stop them using tactics like stuttering run ups or feinting to shoot?

This could potentially lead to long penalty shootouts. But also what happens if a GK does any of these? Red Card? Yellow Card?

What do you guys think to this?

I agree with @Fan of Big Tone, but I also believe that attacking players should be made to cut out some of their bad antics. It should be a straight run-up.

    3. KB1862

      KB1862

Despite this rule being implemented, I still see that the penalty takers are still able to do stuttering run ups instead of having a straight run up and hitting the ball. Surely the rule should have been applied to both sets.

      Good debate.

I think that they should leave things as they were.

The goalkeeper trying to put the penalty taker off for me is just part of the game.

I saw it yesterday in the Africa Nations semi final.

They didn't follow the new rules there.

  3. You've won a prize of a weekend getaway but you have to choose 3 people involved in football, past or present, to join you. Which 3 are you choosing?

I'd go with Neil Warnock, Peter Crouch and Gazza. All 3 are characters in their own way. It might be a little chaotic at times but it'll be an absolute laugh.

  4. Watching YouTube, a video from 'Magpie Goals' came on, and it was highlights from the 1994 game against us and Nottingham Forest.

It mentioned how we had signed a player (Colin Foster) unfamiliar to me on an extended loan for another month from West Ham. He was described as 'a tower of strength in the magpies defence'. The loan move suggested that we were trying to raise funds to sign him permanently for around £175,000. I assume we didn't manage to raise the funds? I'm not sure if Mick Walker lasted much longer beyond this point - not without fact checking.

So, as a talking point - what memories do you have of this? Did you think Notts should have signed Foster?

I am very interested to read everyone's thoughts, as I recall how important this season were for us, but I would have been too young to know all the inner stuff a regular attending fan would know.

    1. Robbie

I can remember that Notts had a good side that year, but we were leaking goals. We were in the mix for the playoffs, but our defence was letting us down. A bit like now.

When Colin Foster joined us on  loan he shored up our defence and we went on a little run. We beat Forest at home in the famous Charlie Palmer match. Colin played his part in winning that match, a match that will always be remembered by Notts fans.

He was available to buy, they were quoting £175K to buy him, but unfortunately we didn't raise it.

It was a bit like the Glenn Roeder fiasco when the supporters were asked to try to raise money for him. I sent the club a £5 cheque. I believe several thousand was raised, but we failed to get Glenn.

When Colin went back to his club our form dipped. We failed to win any of our last 6 matches and just missed the playoffs by 3 points.

I believe Colin Foster could have got us to the playoffs that year if he had been signed by Notts. It's ironic, the fact that he was transferred later to Watford for £100K when we were quoted much more.

Colin for me was in the same class as David Needham. He was one of our most influential loanees we've had, even though he only stayed 9 games.

    2. DangerousSausage

      DangerousSausage

To be honest I remember him mainly from the commentary of the Charlie video. "Colin Foster far side. Draper sweeps it in..."

Walker got sacked after we had a poor start to the following season. We ended up getting relegated.

    1. Fozzy

      Fozzy

Can’t argue with the fact that our season has fallen apart since Matty got injured. I’m trying to think of the sides in the past that have been so dependent on one key player and seen results seriously drop off without them, Bryan Robson at Utd and Stevie G at Liverpool are the ones that spring to mind but there are bound to be others.

You can’t replace the irreplaceable, you have to adapt your side and style. We have failed to do that.

    2. Robbie

      Robbie

      A very revealing Statistic.

Just demonstrates how valuable and an influence Matt Palmer is to us.

It's very unlucky to have him out of the side for so long, however Stuart & his team has to find a way to negate his loss, & I believe in the last two matches he's trying to do just that.

    3. Chris

      Chris

I said at the time that the loss of Matt Palmer impacted our form and how his absence would be a big task to find cover. I thought Dan Gosling may have fitted in nicely, but he was largely disappointing. Scott Robertson seems to be improving, but it's more about how we adjust tactics or give individual player instructions during games, as we won't find another Palmer. Certainly not someone who can be simply replaced in a like-for-like manner.

Also, I think it's worth noting that the amount of bad injures would have played a part because they all seemed to come at points where our momentum was picking up.

I am sure lessons can be learnt from this, but it's not all about recruitment - it's about understanding the squad at your disposal and how someone else can come in, bringing their own game in a way that compliments everyone else.

  7. Stone 6.5 - a couple of decent saves, no chance with the winner.
Warner 6 - a mix of good and dodgy moments. Showed promise, he will have easier games than this.
Baldwin 8* - plenty of good headers and blocks, held us together at the back.
Cameron 6 - did ok, fairly standard game.
Nemane 5.5 - decent first half, didn't do a lot in the second.
Robertson 7 - got stuck in and used the ball well, looks a useful recruit.
Bostock 5.5 - not awful, but nowhere near the player he can be.
Cowley 5.5 - another who didn't reach the levels he is capable of.
Jones 7 - scared them, but got no protection from the ref. Should have done better with his second half opportunities.
McGoldrick 7 - not everything came off, but still our most likely scoring threat.
Langstaff 5.5 - lacked service, but didn't make enough of his time on the ball. I'll be interested to see a replay of the penalty shout.

    Austin n/a

Could have, should have, but didn't. Not the usual disaster at their hovel, but still massively disappointing. We did enough to earn a point at least, but luck and the ref weren't on our side.  I can understand the lack of subs because we didn't have a lot of attacking options on the bench. A playoff place is still in our hands, but we need to put a good run together quickly.

I don't believe there was much that could've been done about the goal. Stone would've had to make a remarkable save to deny it, and that's just not realistic. Baldwin seems rejuvenated under Maynard; I believe we'll see others stepping up soon. Fair ratings, thanks for sharing.

    4. CliftonMagpie

Stone 7 - He appeared much more confident and made some decent saves. Overall, very dependable.
Warner 7 - He slotted in quite well, seemed organised and conscious of the threat. Big match for him to make his first appearance for Notts.
Baldwin 8* - Player of the Match all day, excellent fighting spirit and defence.
Cameron 5 - Weak on the ball, lacked awareness but did some good things. I just feel his mind wasn’t in the match and the poor contributions affect his overall score.
Nemane 5 - Mansfield was never going to let him play his usual game and he suffered for that, but no further ideas or effort made him seem pointless.
Robertson 7 - Best performance by him so far, his relentless pressing and eagerness to move forward was a delight.
Bostock 5 - Not his best match, felt he lost the ball a bit easily and failed to hold his ground against them.
Cowley 6.5 - He did alright, nothing to his usual standards but he connected well and tried to make things happen.
Jones 7 - Brilliant play, very direct and suffered from a lack of protection from the officials which led to him being kicked and pushed around all match. Despite this, he did very well.
McGoldrick 6.5 - I thought he was better than his performance against Barrow, but still below the standard we know. He didn’t pose much of a threat.
Langstaff 5 - Lacked involvement but it wasn’t so much down to him, it was a failure to get the ball to him.

  9. Mike Dean declined to use VAR to save 'mate' and fellow referee Anthony Taylor from 'grief' - https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/66612570

I find this shocking on the part of Mike Dean. I get that referees are subject to alot of abuse and grief but surely that comes with the territory of being a referee?

The whole point of VAR is to catch anything the referee has missed on the pitch. The fact that Mike Dean spotted the incident but rather than telling his "mate" to go to the screen, he allowed the game to go on as though nothing happened to save him from grief.

This is why VAR gets as much criticism as it does because the people behind it don't utilise it correctly.

      AmericanPie

I've watched clips of Mike Dean on YouTube, still sharing his opinions on decisions and responding to VAR questions. In a recent instance against Forest, when Toney moved the ball for his goal from a free kick, the referee sprayed the foam. Toney moved it twice and displaced some foam. Dean's response lacked insight, making him seem less credible as an official. I don't consider him suitable for handling VAR, let alone being informative enough for Sky Sports.

    3. Robbie

      Robbie

Totally agree @AmericanPie Tobey's actions should have resulted in a red card for totally disregarding and changing what the ref did when the ref marked the pitch, but even afterwards, no action has been taken against the player.

And VAR, that for another storey where I've asked the question. What's the point of VAR?

    4. AmericanPie

      AmericanPie

I believe the incident could be considered as clever cheating; not a single Forest player complained, and their keeper neglected to set up the wall. I'm torn regarding the punishment or whether the goal should have stood. Ben Foster thinks every player adjusts the ball, but with the introduction of foam, we haven't seen mishaps like this before. Mike Dean's unknowing response doesn't present well, but VAR requires ongoing training and simplified outcomes to ensure accurate decision-making in response to changes.

Love JJ, I think he is easily our best player so far this season. He is just brilliant at crossing the ball between keeper and the last line of defence, it’s a nightmare to defend against and a godsend for strikers.

As to whether he could play in the championship, I’m not so sure as the injuries he suffered have robbed him of his pace, he would have to play a different role but that would make him less effective. League 1 quality player for definite.

    4. AmericanPie

      AmericanPie

Watching Jodi Jones is a delight; his class was evident in the Boreham Wood playoff game last season, and he truly shines when the situation demands it. If Stuart Maynard can instill that winning mentality before a game slips away, it would make Jones a more consistently effective player. While I don't deny his skill, I believe there's even greater potential within his abilities.

It wouldn’t be suitable to have safe standing in the middle of the KOP or at higher levels. It should be in a location that’s easy to access and safe, away from other areas. A spot behind the goal and upwards wouldn’t be a poor choice. The lower left KOP Pavis side might not be too bad. The same could be applied to the Pavis, on the lower right KOP side.

    3. AmericanPie

      AmericanPie

I can’t stand for long these days, so I’m not bothered and the chances of me getting to Meadow Lane are slim. But when I do finally get back to Nottingham, I’ll choose to sit. However, I do hope that safe standing makes a comeback. There’s no problem with it when done right and fans can choose if they want to stand with others.

    4. Robbie

      Robbie

I believe that all Stadia should be allowed to have safe standing areas.

Many away fans stand up in front of their seats anyway, and this obstructs other fans from seeing the game.

But if the clubs do introduce safe standing then the price should be lower like it used to be, but clubs are not keen to lower the price, you can understand why.

I believe the majority of fans would welcome safe standing areas, so I hope it won't be long before we see our local league clubs make standing available.

Its a massive thing across mainland Europe especially Italy and Spain and we are now seeing it creep into English football.

Although painful to admit, our red neighbours do a fantastic job with the Forza Garibaldi group.

Newcastle have WAR flags, Aberdeen the union bears, Juventus have Bianconeri and our neighbours Forza Garibaldi.

With the drive to create a better atmosphere at Meadow Lane do you think something like this would appeal to our supporters?

Is it something the OSA should do or a stand alone group maybe affiliated with the OSA
£1.25 a month over say 2000 members, you can get a hell of a lot of flags and banners with £30,000  (Yes I've had a look)

Just watched the EFL highlights and saw him pop up with goals instead. He’s just won Player of the Year and Player’s Player of the Year as well as finishing top scorer for them. The main purposes of the proposed new regulator will be:

      • Stopping English clubs from joining closed-shop competitions, which are judged to harm the domestic game
      • Preventing a repeat of financial failings seen at numerous clubs, notably the collapses of Bury and Macclesfield
      • Introducing a more stringent owners' and directors' test to protect clubs and fans
      • Giving fans power to stop owners changing a club's name, badge and traditional kit colours
      • Ensuring a fair distribution of money filters down the English football pyramid from the Premier League

I especially like the outlined points.

No English club should be allowed to join any competition which the FA/Clubs don't approve.

The financial side needs exploring more. I personally think it will be hard to completely get rid of, so having some kind of fund collected maybe through TV rights or annual fees could go towards building such a fund to provide some kind of security.

Vetting owners is a difficult one. It's one thing checking if a potential owner has the money to fund a club - I don't think they factor in what happens if a smaller club grows too quickly without the right backing. Yet someone may have the funds for 3-5 seasons and bankruptcy is another obstacle to navigate. My point is, whatever is done needs to apply common sense and at least factor in the worst case scenario.

I am all for giving fans the power to have a say within their club, but I wonder how this would be handled.

If you gave season ticket holders a vote, you would make those overseas or otherwise unable to attend to vote disgruntled. Public voting also has the risk of being hi-jacked by nefarious people. If you create a committee or operate it through a fan group, it's not really fair either. Proving to be something with good intentions, but ultimately difficult to apply practically.

This for me is the easiest and most practical point, how money filters down the football pyramid.

Even to the grass root levels, if we as a nation are to compete with other developed nations - we need to do more in this area to ensure success. There's been striving for at least a decade with the likes of Basford and Anorld Town - yet it doesn't quite filter below.

If we're just speaking about 'Football League' I would be disappointed.

A percentage should be assigned to funnel down, guaranteeing a certain amount for the lower tier teams. I don't think Championship teams are hard off; it's League One and Two that suffers the most.

Achieving this goal is a challenging task, whether it is done by a single person or a committee. Nonetheless, I hope it can be accomplished.

This is a very important piece of news and should be a really good topic for discussion.

This topic could be linked to several other discussions covering the problems within English football at this time, the big clubs getting richer and all the other clubs in the football pyramid being left behind, the lack of money filtering down from the Premier League.VAR not yet perfected, and last but not least, the Fair Play Rules that don't seem to be fair at all, if your not a rich club.

Personally, I think these proposals are more for preventing the rich clubs leaving to join a Super League, rather than fixing problems within the game.

I don't think the authorities will want to change much apart from preventing a Super League. The FA will want the PL to remain the top league in the World and it needs to generate money to remain at the top. So I believe the status quo will remain for the foreseeable future, with smaller clubs continuing to struggle.

It's a sad conclusion to come to, but who is going to stand up to the big clubs and their owners and make the changes that would make the game fairer & much more competitive?

What line-up should Stuart Maynard opt for? What will be the key areas for the Magpies to get a victory? What do you think the final score will be?

It's obviously frustrating to lose another derby, especially as there was a chance to get something from the game. However, there are definitely positives to take.

We battled and competed but ran out of ideas and legs in the end. Should've taken one of the chances we had in the first half. Robertson looked good and battled well, making it tough for Maris and Reed to build attacks from deep, winning the ball in good areas.

Maynard explained in his post match why Jones and Nemane were on opposite wings and I understood. It was a good way of breaking their press. I thought Warner slotted in well and looked more comfortable than Brindley. Baldwin had a good game, helping us play out from the back, heading away plenty of crosses and making his fair share of last ditch blocks and tackles.

However, we still lack strength in depth. It's the biggest difference between League 2 and the National League. Hence, again, why Austin was the only viable substitute. Nemane was knackered from about 65 mins onwards, as was Bostock. We're not ready to go up and we need to realise it. We can still make a fight of it this season, but if we don't go up it's not the end of the world.

Notts seemed to do fine in most parts of the match. We didn’t appear to be on the verge of conceding an easy goal and most of our play was upbeat. I believe our main downfall was how crucial decisions went against us, but that’s football. Robertson seemed very impressive against Mansfield, Jodi couldn’t do much as he was constantly being fouled. I believe if Notts had scored or if it had been allowed, it would be a completely different story. I don’t engage much on social media because there’s too much negativity from fans. We lost, but the team represented themselves well and Maynard has made us look more defensively solid in two games. The next step is to secure that first victory and hopefully, morale and confidence will increase, our season isn’t finished.

We have to remember this is our first season back in league 2. To be in the playoff mix with an excellent chance of making the playoffs at the end of the league season is tremendous. It is still in our own hands to achieve it.

  19. These all kick off at 3pm on Saturday, so get your predictions in by then and don't forget your joker. Good luck!
