With the sad passing of Sven yesterday, looking through social media, I was reminded that Sven, Big Sam & Howard Wilkinson have all been England Managers.

Three England Managers who all happened to be good Club Managers who, during their careers were also associated with Notts, at different times, over the last forty two years.

Not many league clubs can say that they had three Managers who were also Manager of England.

  • @liampieΒ Howard Wilkinson spent the vast majority of his playing career with Boston United after a spell with Brighton.

He was successful as a Manager.

He started his career at Notts and became a coach under Jimmy Sirrel, before taking over from Jimmy and keeping Notts in the First Division with a fifteenth placeΒ

He moved to Sheffield Wednesday in 1983 & got them promoted to the first Division at his first attempt & kept them in the top tier for four years with a high of fifth place.

In 1988 he moved to Leeds where he had his biggest success, getting promoted to the first Division, then winning the last Division 1 championship with Leeds in 1991/92 before it became the PL.

He Managed England U 21 & had two spells as England Caretaker Manager.

Wilkinson was good at building teams.Β

    More on his career here????

Over workplace conduct, I wonder what he’s been up to.

Always a quality opponent.Β

Sad news forΒ Geraldo Bajrami and Burton Albion. Hope he makes a full recovery as soon as possible.

  • Oh dear, at least it’s not a broken leg! That’s no fun, but I can imagine an ACL injury is quite painful. I wouldn’t want to be in Geraldo Bajami’s position. I assume it was the same knee, but without news, who knows? I just hope it doesn’t force him into early retirement.

It's very unfortunate that he has been ruled out for another season. It might be worth him seeing a specialist to find out why this keeps happening and if there is anything that can be done. It might be that he can't play football without the risk of injury. That would be sad.

Nice article & a good read why the team across the road being in the Premier League is good for Notts.

The Notts owners should take lots of credit for taking advantage of it.

  • Notts and Nottingham benefit from Forest's status, but it's the same for Notts themselves. When a club does well at any level, it encourages young people to get involved with football. I think the blog Gerrit Forward is brilliant. It gives you a lot to think about.

Everything has a knock-on effect. It affects Non-League. The trend of supporting a local club like Hucknall Town or Basford United comes from the increasing price of football. So, I think it's natural that our neighbours status would benefit Notts. It's better for Nottingham this way.

Intra city rivalries, I think of Bradford Park Avenue and Bradford City, Bradford being reasonably comparable to Nottingham's populous

I feared for Notts in the National League that one bad season, we could have been heading towards a Bradford Park Avenue extinction.. Bradford Park Avenue had been considered the premier club in Bradford for many years

    Β

So we are in the morning after the evening before. We witnessed a five star performance by Notts, orchestrated by a 10/10 performance by Dan Crowley.

His performance was witnessed by the Sky Sports Cameras too. Dan was trending on twitter. Social media was handing out the plaudits. One wrote that he had never seen such a performance by a player at league 2 level.

Jodi had a great game too, influential as ever, involved in lots of good things last night. Both Dan & Jodi playing at their best at the same time.

There has been much speculation about offers flowing in for both of them in recent weeks. Their performance last night will only add to that speculation.

The question is. Can Notts keep hold of them until the transfer window closes in a week's time? I really do hope so. Notts have to do all they can to keep them. Offer them both new improved contracts is what I would do if I were Montague.

Thoughts?

  • i dont see the club selling either, i think the board are wise enough to know losing two key players is more than enough. selling jodi jones or dan crowley would be a major headache. even if we did sign someone to replace them both or just one, we would still need to give them time to settle in. crowley at this stage is and jodi has been with us during our national league promotion.

i think both will stay for now, as i dont see it making sense to jump to a different club.

mk dons are signing players for fun it seems, they need to settle down because they have had a poor start.

I would be more concerned if we weren't showing signs of improvements, and whilst Grimsby is just one game. If this type of form continues, then it would be an advantage to Notts. I don't see either leaving before this transfer window closes, I don't see Notts accepting a bid as enough. It could lead to lower offers in January. If any developments occur, Notts could once again reject or request a higher fee.

Football, however, can be unpredictable, and I will be happier when the window closes.

Just keep in mind that offers can be agreed outside the transfer window, so it wouldn't be complete comfort once it does close. It just means the next window sees the deal become official.

If our form can continue, both Dan Crowley and Jodi Jones see that the club is moving forward. They might agree to extend their stay, I think Jones might be tempted to do this for a year. Crowley is a bit more difficult to speculate about.

I hope we managed to keep their services, but I believe the club can find replacement players. Selling late in the transfer window wouldn't make sense. So, I hope we can keep them for longer. But every player has a price, and Notts will decide if any offers are good enough.

Notts Women travel to Loughborough to play Loughborough Lightning on Sunday 25th August for their second National League Division 1 Midlands, game of the season.

This will be a tough match for Notts because Loughborough were one of the top teams in the Division last season.

Notts had a good win in their first game of the season against Lincoln United when they won 2:1 at Eastwood.

  • I’m not being negative, but I think it shows the level our women’s team is at and where improvements are needed. Not every team will beat them like that, but it does show how good Loughborough are.

    @BromPie

Loughborough Women are part of a large franchise that gets lots of investment.

Β They are clearly too good for this league and are one of the favourites for promotion.

Notts are basically competing with 5 other teams in this league on level terms.

Notts just avoided relegation last season but have strengthened the side in the close season.

Hopefully they can finish mid table this season and build from there.

As I no longer live on our fair isle, I treated myself to an iFollow subscription for 150 quid last season and it was the best money I've spent since the hammock I treated myself to during covid. On top of that, it's money for the club.

This season all I've heard is that Sky is taking over domestic streaming rights, but not the international rights, which are to remain with iFollow. However, there has been no word on whether the service will be continued (or what it will cost); the Football League links to the streaming services of each club, but the link to ours (and most others) only produces a "Page Not Found" message. Of the sites I checked, only Orient and Swindon were offering something (with a price hike of 25% over last season).

Does anybody know anything? If nothing will be offered this season, I'll probably spend it on German third division coverage instead. But I'd rather be watching (and putting money into) Notts...

  • 7 hours ago, Morten Johansen said:

@DangerousSausageΒ Did you have any problems last night using overseas streaming on PiesPlayer?

    I had two issues:

    1. The option to "Watch" was not ready until 3-4 minutes into the game. Normally the stream would be available about one hour before kick-off, not after the match has begun..

    2. In lack of a better word, a lot of "stuttering" on the commentators for about 20-25 minutes in the first half.

    Β

Yes I did! On the plus side, I was finally able to cast it to my TV using Chromecast. iFollow has never managed that in several years.

I had my stream running a few minutes before kick-off. But I also heard the "stuttering" and ended up switching the sound off. I thought it might have been an issue with one of the microphones - did it sound like that on the radio too? It also threw me out of the stream at about the 70-minute mark and I couldn't get back in until the 87th minute.

It's been a frustrating experience so far, but it'll be good when it works.

Good morning it’s Monday and another week starts. The weather is decidedly dull, blustery and cooler this morning, the nights are also drawing in now, how depressing, it’ll soon be Autumn.

I hope everyone is well and able to have a good day.

  • Notts played some superb football. Some of the long-distance passing would have been fitting in the Championship. Curtis Edwards looks to have one hell of a pass on him. The number of long upfield passes he made put Grimsby on the back foot. I was more impressed with him than I was with Dan Crowley. Crowley had a great game but grew in confidence after his second goal. Edwards played exceptionally well throughout.

I didn’t expect the performance. I don’t know about anyone else, but I think the idea of Notts putting 4 goals past Grimsby would have been rare. It was a classy performance by Notts. I felt a bit sorry for the travelling Grimsby fans. They tried to spark some banter with their chants, which was nice to hear, but their team let them down. It looked like they didn’t know how to cope against Notts, who played in fifth gear.

It’s sometimes hard to see what happens, but I’ve seen a video Sky Sports released that clearly shows the ball bouncing off both of Dan Crowley’s hands. As for the offside, I’m not sure there was any interference. They change the rules so much it’s hard to be certain. It did look like offside, but I think even if the goals were disallowed, Notts would have gone on to win anyway. It was a brilliant performance, and I understand Grimsby fans’ complaints, but the decision is final now. They’ll get a similar favour at some point, which they might not mind then.

  • @liampie:Β Here’s a breakdown for you, mate.

    • Ketan MakwanaΒ was announced as the new majority shareholder of Caley Thistle, but the deal collapsed at the last moment.
    • Seventy7Ventures, led by Makwana, had a Β£2.5m offerΒ to purchase over 50% of the club’s shares, which was initially accepted by the board.
    • Former chief executive Scot GardinerΒ endorsed the deal, but negotiations were suspended three weeks later, and Gardiner left the club.
    • People who previously dealt with Makwana describe him as a "fantasist" prone to exaggeration, who never delivered on his promises.
    • Makwana previously attempted to take over Hayes and Yeading United, but negotiations fell through as he did not fulfil his commitments.
    • He also promised investments in Krafty EntertainmentΒ but failed to provide the funds.
    • Makwana made several dubious claims, including working as a special adviser to former Prime Minister David Cameron and contributing to Forbes, neither of which could be verified.
    • His vision for Caley Thistle included "ambitious projects"Β like a hotel, Esports Arena, and a fan park, but experts warned it was unrealistic and raised multiple red flags.

The situation surrounding Ketan Makwana's failed takeover of Caley Thistle underscores significant concerns about the club's leadership and due diligence processes. Makwana, initially set to become the majority shareholder, has been criticised by former associates as someone prone to grandiose promises without delivering results. His history of failed ventures, including attempted takeovers of other football clubs and unfulfilled investment promises in ventures like Krafty Entertainment, paints a picture of a man more inclined to talk than to act. Furthermore, his claims of having served as a special adviser to former Prime Minister David Cameron and contributing to Forbes magazine were found to be unsubstantiated, raising further doubts about his credibility. Despite the ambitious vision he proposed for Caley Thistle, including developments like a hotel, Esports Arena, and a fan park, experts in football finance have warned that such plans are often unrealistic and carry numerous red flags, particularly with the involvement of cryptocurrency.

The abrupt collapse of the deal and the subsequent departure of the club's chief executive, Scot Gardiner, highlight the precarious financial position Caley Thistle found themselves in, especially after facing significant financial setbacks. The fact that the club came so close to handing over control to someone with such a questionable track record reflects deeper issues within its management. Supporters are now understandably concerned and demanding answers about how this situation was allowed to develop. In the end, while the club may have narrowly avoided a potentially disastrous takeover, this episode serves as a stark reminder of the importance of thorough vetting and the risks associated with being seduced by overly ambitious promises. The future of Caley Thistle now depends on finding a more reliable and transparent path forward.

why does it sound like the guy was a lot like alan hardy?Β

a "fantasist", i remember when he made a big thing of the indoor training facilities where over a hard gym floor. he just paid someone to put down artificial grass and called it state of the art!! plus he said that he wanted to build a hotel behind the back of the kop.

Now it's time for our second round, and there are still 1215 points to play for! These matches all kick off at 3pm on Saturday, and don't forget your joker!

What a transformation the brothers have made to our club since taking over the ownership of Notts County on this day five years ago.

So much positivity around the club & with Notts now on a firm financial footing, not forgetting the memories made that will never be forgotten, & further great memories to come too.

  • Chris and Alex Reedtz have done wonders in their five years, with one promotion. They continue to push for a second. The one so far is the biggest in the club’s history in recent years. It would be amazing if we could enjoy another. Yet, I am pleased to see how the squad improves and how we grow as a club.

The brothers have done wonders. Going to Meadow Lane is the best I have known during my years of supporting the club. I am still a teen, so I have seen some of the darker times as a younger fan and worried. I don’t with the Reedtz in charge; they seem to be transforming the club’s fate.

Chris and Alex have done wonderfully well. They are prepared to put the club first and have shown strong leadership. The fact they don’t crumble to the fans, especially those who call for the manager so often and complain that it’s embarrassing when the club does, shows their focus on making sure the club achieves its goals not in the short but long term.

With football it's often easy to lose your sense of perspective. Our former DoF Sven-GΓΆran Eriksson only has months left to live because of cancer, and at the weekend he got to realise a lifetime's ambition by leading out Liverpool at Anfield - a wonderful and touching gesture from all concerned. And how nice it is to see him smiling like that too.

  • I actually had a call a few days ago, my phone on silent, but I was using it to do something. I noticed the call screen come up, but it quickly ended. I heard what seemed to be a soft-spoken Japanese woman speaking very rapidly. Left a voicemail message. I couldn't make sense of it, I just deleted the voicemail.

It was very odd, thankfully nothing jumped out of my phone screen like "The Ring" or one of their famous horror films.

Otherwise, I would have had a heart attack.

My phone is on silent/ vibrate and if anyone rings me that I know I will ring back if it is legit.

My phone warns me of suspected spam calls, and if it doesn't, it gives me an option to report the phone call as spam and I can block the phone number.

I must have over 100+ phone numbers blocked now. The problem is, these spammers have multiple phone numbers on auto dial so, someone can soon rack up many spam phone numbers they have to block.

Also, if you're not sure of a number you can check it on the internet. If it's spam there will be multiple complaints about it, so in that case I block it.

At the weekend Gateshead's Captain, Greg Olley was fouled by an opponent early in the match and sustained a broken leg.Β

Thankfully medical teams were quick to intervene and Greg was given lengthy treatment on the pitch before being transported to hospital for treatment.

Unfortunately, Greg will be out of action for the rest of the season & will need lengthy rehabilitation before returning sometime next season.

The offending player received a straight Red card for dangerous foul play and will be probably suspended for 3 games.

In my opinion if a player is seriously injured & that injury could be career defining due to serious foul play, the punishment for the offender that was sent off should be harsh.

Not sure how long the suspension in these cases should be, but surely it should be at least a 10 to 15 game suspension.

Incidentally, we saw the treatment that Jodi was getting on Sunday. Referees need to be protecting players much more from constant abuse too.

Thoughts?

  • Terrible challenge. There was always the chance that he wouldn’t get the ball. The Gateshead player had plenty of chances to get rid of the ball. He was under little pressure and made the pass well before Kelly Evans flew in.

I remember a few challenges that Dion Kelly-Evans did whilst at Notts, some which could have easily seen him walk. Since leaving Notts, he's been a bit sulky with his previous teams and now that he's getting minutes with Woking, he commits a stupid challenge like this. It's not good or defendable by any means.

Whilst I did like DKE for his effort, some of our fans cling to him like he was one of our best players, and he simply wasn't.

His defending always seemed limited compared to his ability to go forward. If I had his pace, I wouldn't have slid in. It's not going to end well, he could have injured himself. I get that he's probably trying to retain his place and is just trying to work hard, but it's a poor decision. If a stream roller drove that fast, it wouldn't be permitted on a work site.

After just two games of their season, Neil Critchley has been dismissed as Blackpool Head Coach.
