I've told the joke my Family Tree only goes back three Generations, because my Grandad was a Lumberjack. However after watching Who Do You Think You Are? I thought wouldn't it be interesting, to find out about my Family Tree. So to that End I employed a Genealogist, one Doctor Tom Cobblers who came up with the Following Interesting Facts about, some of my Ancestors. I had nothing to do with any of these facts about my Family Tree, so the Work described here is all Cobblers.
1066. One of my Ancestors was first on the scene when King Harold Got an Arrow in his eye. His advice to the King ? Keep blinking 'H' it'll work it's way out.
During the War with Napoleon, one of my Ancestors was on a Ship which was captured by the French. The Emperor himself questioned the Crew. He declared that the British should surrender and let him rule Britain because he would beat any British Force. To which my Ancestor became the first person to use the term Oh Yeah, You And Who's Army?
That same Ancestor remained a French P.O.W for a few years, and in fact married a French Woman. Their eldest Son became a Famous French Chef, who invented Gravy. I found this very interesting. Really I said one of my Ancestors invented Gravy. Oh Yes said Dr Cobblers I'm sure you've heard of the Count of Monte Bisto.
On my Mother's side there is Scottish ancestry and one of her Ancestors emigrated to America, where he became a Famous Red Indian Fighter. Hawkeye the Nu.
This last Fact I find the most Interesting. Have you heard about the Football Match which took place between English and German Soldiers on Christmas Day 1914, during World War I ?
The Final Score was 1-1. However my Great Grandad thought he had scored a late Winner only for it to be disallowed, just before the Big Guns started firing again. He swore till his Dying Day he wasn't Off Side claiming there were at least Two German Soldier Defenders Level With Him.
Well there you have it my fellow PON Members,, if you're thinking about doing your Family Tree, go ahead and Do It, you can find out some interesting things about Your Past.

I have watched all three versions of the highlights on the Notts official site, and I am impressed by just how well we played after going 2-0 down. Some teams surrender or start arguing, but Notts just got on with it and proved that we can do well even if setbacks happen. I praise the whole squad, but it is good to see Stuart Maynard gaining praise.
It's Matchday at Coronation Park Eastwood.

It’s good to see the Notts Women’s team enjoying a solid victory over Mansfield in the cup. Good luck to them in it.
Fantastic win for them! Pleased to see them score 6 goals too, plus a clean sheet and into the next round! COYP
Well done, pleased they beat Mansfield 6-0. They should be pleased with that!
Did you know, one substitution for an injured player was allowed in English league football for the first time, from the beginning of the 1965/66 season?
Goalkeeper Mick Rose, who made 109 appearances for Notts between 1967 &1970, became the first ever player to be substituted for an injury sustained in a match (21/08/65) when he played for Charlton.
He was replaced by Keith Peacock who became the first substitute to replace an injured player.
Only injured players were allowed to be substituted during the first two seasons following the introduction of substitutions.
But it became apparent, that some players were feigning injury so a tactical substitution could be made.
The authorities caught on, and from the start of the 1967/68 season, the rule was changed to allow a substitution either for an injury, or for tactical reasons.

Yes, I am aware of these facts. Notts has been credited for many inventions in football. We were one of the original pioneers back in the day. It's a shame how far we have fallen as a club. I don't like the term "sleeping giant," but we are much bigger than League Two in history. We just need to earn our presence back.
@Fan of Big Tone It was a failed attempt at humour. I also forgot that it was actually Paul Whitehouse who does a spot-on impression of Michael Caine.
It's time to polish your crystal ball again - these matches all kick off at 3pm on Saturday, and don't forget your joker!

I’ll take that! Well done, everyone. It might not have been your week, but there’s always the next round. Let’s keep the competition tough.
I'll take that. Not far off the middle of the table. Everything to play for
Well done to @super_ram your following in Notts's shoes.
My performances have been abysmal, well done @super_ram your crystal ball is obviously top notch, I got mine from Poundland.

The attendances are good, with a lot of younger fans getting involved. The active community that embraces them is helping to make it feel like home. There is a Notts family presence at the club, and fans look after their own. Long may this continue.
Yes, long may it continue. Meadow Lane looks much better, and if we are to cope pound for pound, we need to keep the gates up. At some stage, it may see season ticket prices increasing, and the only way to reasonably combat this is to ensure good gates on match days.
I would hope Meadow Lane can keep it up, as I can see another thousand or two with bigger clubs from League One if we can get up there. All the money generated by the club will go towards making us stronger as a club.
I would like us to take a moment to wish, @ARLukomski a happy 25th birthday!
The Pride of Nottingham wishes you a wonderful day. Bring those points home, please! ????

Happy Birthday, Mr Notts Vlogger! I hope you had a good celebration with those massive three points! @ARLukomski… All the best to you.
Good win on your 25th birthday, @ARLukomski. Happy belated birthday, to you!!
A very quick and simple question.
As Jodi Jones bulked up ?
I don't know if other PON Members have noticed but it seems to me, that Jodi Jones appears much bigger than he did last season. It Strikes me he's put on more bulk this year, by that I mean (to me any way) he seems bigger and more muscular in his appearance. His face seems fuller so as he decided to Bulk up to help more with his defensive duties and make it harder for opposition players to bundle him off the Ball? Or Is It Just Me?
- Show previous comments 3 more
i cant say i really noticed but i do think he is looking a lot fitter, so hes probably just training hard in all departments. a strong body, should help keep him playing.
You certainly raise a few good points @Chris. I also noticed that in the photo stills of Jodi his shirt does seem to hang more loosely on him. And in reference to his last interview he did say he'd been hitting the Gym as I recall, however I just assumed that would be part of his daily training regime anyway. Jodi's start to the season as been excellent and if he continues in that vein expect a Lot of clubs, higher up the Football Pyramid come sniffing around the Lane come January.
I’d say he’s a bit more toned now and has some definition, whereas before he just looked like a typical footballer. I don’t think it’s that much, though.
Interesting statistics regarding the league record of Notts for their last eleven league matches.
Just two losses in 11 with 21 points in total gained.
Is Stuart turning things around & winning over his doubters.
Thoughts?

The start of his reign was poor, but anyone who believes it would have been different under Luke Williams is mistaken. I loved our time with Williams in charge of Notts. He spoke so well, but defensively he never had the solutions.
I don’t want to sound like I outright blame Williams. I am just trying to make the case and point that I doubt he would have managed to change the downward fall in performances our players took. Also, I doubt defensively much would have changed now. Williams clearly got on well with certain players and I think he had a sentimental approach to retaining players and who played.
Stuart Maynard deserves much of the praise for where we are now. I don’t see why anyone would have doubts. The squad hasn’t just turned it around. Neither is it solely down to the club’s recruitment. I hope more come on board and get behind Maynard. He’s working hard and the lads seem just as fired up now as they ever did under Williams.
Look, both coaches are good in their own right. Williams will be forever remembered as the man who restored our club’s pride and gave us an amazing season and a decent return to the EFL. But it’s Maynard’s time now. If you want the club to succeed and get back up the leagues, support him like you would the club. Keep the negative thoughts to a minimum until it’s valid. It never was last season, because the issue needed time and new players to turn around. We are seeing that now, I feel.
The really annoying "fans" who are against Stuart Maynard will probably say it's still early days or only credit the squad. However, I think those who were unsure are now starting to come around, if they haven't already. I'm pleased for Maynard, he’s making the right decisions. Others have mentioned it before, but he’s learning professional football as he goes, and it’s good to see it paying off, especially when he could have easily been sacked.
We are back for another round of MAGnets! This time, we will be playing Bromley FC at Hayes Lane on the 14th of September 2024.
The player I will start this round with might not have been the best technically, but he was a top person off the field and always had a smile on his face. He currently plays for Rochdale, but before he played for Notts, he played for Bromley. It's none other than Tobi Adebayo-Rowling.
Let's stick to naming one at a time for now, please. So, we can see how many members can contribute to this.
Here is the match discussion too.
Will be added once live.
Please feel free to join in, but let's stick with one guess to start things off. This might be a harder round!

Devon Kelly-Evans didn’t play for them either. It’s easy to confuse teams or mistakenly think a player did.
Whoops! I've had a complete shocker, neither Brunt or Dion played for Bromley, you are right. I've confused them with Boreham Wood! Both from London, both start with B, both play the same style of football and both play in white! Come on guys, make yourselves a bit more unique, they merged into one team for me in the National League as far as I was concerned!
What makes a good Striker?
It goes without saying that a good striker needs to have a combination of technical & physical skills, as well as tactical awareness.
They also need to be able to read the game & make quick decisions under pressure. They need to have the ability of being in the right place at the right time.
They need to be fit, strong & have plenty of energy to run into space & create space for others.
A good striker should be able to link up well with other teammates, hold up the ball & maintain possession.
Strikers should have good ball striking abilities & be good in the air. They should also be able to help in defence when required.
A striker can have all these attributes, but they also need teammates that can work with them well & supply them with good service & plenty of goalscoring opportunities.
For example, McGoldrick & Jatta have both had good starts to the season. They both have many of those attributes I have described, but they do need to have good service too.
And they both need to be able to fit into the Notts style of play comfortably, which they are clearly doing
The point I'm trying to make is that every player in a good team has their role to play. If all the players are on the same wavelength, the strikers will get plenty of opportunities to score plenty of goals.
Strikers just need to have those good attributes to play their part in the side & to be able to take those opportunities when they come
After all, it's a team game.

It’s all about the differences and how each striker understands the game. You have strikers like Lee Hughes, who knows where to be when play opens up, being a natural goalscorer who can read the game remarkably well. You have more traditional finishers, like Macaulay Langstaff, who puts hard work into his play, chasing every opportunity and pouncing on mistakes. Again, he has a good level of understanding of how the play might open up, and his positional play here at Notts was exceptional.
You have finishers like Alan Shearer, who can do everything and strike the ball from distance without relying so much on pace. I think what makes a good striker is being able to see how play will unfold, being in the right place at the right time, having natural finishing qualities, not being downhearted about missed chances, and having the ability to hold off the opposition to get an effort away. Pace is useful, but it’s all about the technical ability to move with the play and finish when presented with a chance.
a good striker needs to have a sharp eye for goal and read the game well. they must be quick on their feet with good ball control. positioning is key, knowing where to be to receive the ball and create chances. a good striker should have a powerful and accurate shot, able to finish with both feet and their head. they need to be strong to hold off defenders and have the stamina to keep pressing and making runs. teamwork is crucial, linking up well with midfielders and wingers. mental toughness is important, staying focused under pressure and having the confidence to take chances. overall, a good striker combines skill, physical ability, and a strong mentality to score goals.
I think you need to have hunger and self-drive. Missing chances can really affect your morale, but when you believe in yourself and understand that working hard will get you chances, it makes a big difference. The ability to finish, along with other important attributes, can really push you forward.
Technically, movement and positioning are two different aspects that often get mistaken for the same thing. You need to make good movements, but positioning is what can give you that extra yard advantage over defenders. Understanding the game’s flow is key to being successful. Sometimes, it just helps to have a knack for being in the right place.
I have seen players who had everything you would think they needed, yet barely made an impact as a striker.
Good morning, it’s a wet start to the week here, hopefully it’ll brighten up later.
Our holiday is fast approaching, only another week and a bit so we are busy making sure we’ve got all the correct documents and know everything we need to know before we go.

I’ve got a couple of hedges to cut I just hope it isn’t to painful for my bad arm because the hedge trimmer is heavy, I’d better do them before we go away though otherwise they’ll be more work when we get back.
The back lawn also needs a trim but I might leave that until tomorrow, I’m a bit achy after yesterdays run.
I hope everyone is having a great weekend.
Good Morning.
Good start to the morning but it's clouded over here & now raining. It looks set for a while too
Was thinking about cutting the grass today, but that idea has gone for today.
Nice end to Saturday with the away win at Bromley.
Hope the Notts women can get a win over Mansfield Town Women today in the Notts senior cup.
Notts are a league tier above Mansfield so on paper Notts should get a win.

25 minutes ago, Chris said:It's called full fat because it retains all of it, whereas semi-skimmed milk is around 1.5 to 1.
Whole milk doesn't taste right to me, I don't like it.
Your right Chris, whole milk is not whole milk at all. It has nearly all the cream taken out of it.
Skimmed milk is more like coloured water than milk.
I call it whole milk, but full fat doesn’t bother me. Some have too much time on their hands to find faults with words. Just let it pass because the message should be solely about it being healthy. Milk was never intended to be drunk by us, but we do, and the purpose it gave in the beginning has been replaced by other means. It was vital once upon a time; it no longer is, but it tastes great with cereals.
did anyone see the documentary that netflix put out awhile ago that made it seem like drinking mild was bad for us? i like semi skinned milk, whole milk is a bit nasty tasting.

Very Sad News that's come out from Hollywood, Actor James Earl Jones as Passed Away. The Actor with perhaps the Most Iconic and recognizable voice died four days ago. Paid very little for his voice work in the first Star Wars Film and not acknowledged in the films credits, James' voice became forever associated with Sci Fi 's most Famous and Greatest Villain of all time. I saw James in many different roles over the years, in the first Conan film the TV series Roots and a couple of guest spots in American sit coms Frasier and The Big Bang Theory to name just a few. I believe both James's parents were deaf and he didn't learn to speak until he was 5 years old (I stand to be corrected).
R.I.P Lord Vader. Now As One With The Force.
He played a former baseball player in one of my favourite family films; he was a great actor. Coming to America, where he plays a king, is a classic.
Rest in Peace, King Jaffe Joffer, Mr. Mertle, Terence Mann and legendary James Earl Jones. ❤️
its very sad, he was a good actor but had a good innings.
rest in peace.
James Earl Jones is a big loss to the stage and screen. He will forever be known for his roles, and the news of his death is very saddening.

I have seen footage on the news, I also know someone who attended and the amount of people who attended - very befitting of Sven's goodbye.
The football community was truly united to bid farewell to Sven.
its very sad but i thought it was a good sending off, the write up reinforces that.
Sven had a very good send-off. I have also seen clips, and some very nice tributes were made to him.
I think it was only right that many of the England squad he managed turned up, but I don’t think the media should make a fuss about David Beckham attending. It was a funeral, and he was there to pay his respects.
Greeting my fellow PON Members, I don't know if you remember me, it's the Old Wheelbarrow Repairman. I've not been on the site for awhile and if you're interested here's why. Are we all sitting comfortably? The I'll begin Once upon a time in a Galaxy Far Far Away, no hold on I can't use that. Let me see ah yes well. A few weeks ago I tired to get onto the site to air some of my views only to find I was unable to do so, after several attempts which ended in failure I decided to leave things and come back to the site the following day, and much to my surprise not only couldn't I get onto the PON Site I couldn't get onto the internet at all. After trying everything still nothing and as the family computer whiz Kid (my eldest son was on holiday) we had to await his return. When he finally got back from his fortnight of Fun and Games, he attempted to put things right only to finally come to the conclusion the old Laptop was Fu****. So a new one was ordered and it finally came yesterday and he set everything up but I still couldn't get back on PON anyway after lots of backward and forwarding and after some hard work by @Chris I've managed to make my return. Thanks Chris your a Star.
There was a second reason why I've not been on before, now what was it? Oh Yeah I DIED.
I wont bore you with the details ( because I don't remember much of it). I went to the QMC in Nottingham with a pain in my left shoulder and down and around my left shoulder blade. Once in hospital I suffered a New Atrial fibrillation, and a subclinical hyperthyroidism which means my Heart Stopped. A CPR Team brought me back after around 15 minutes. According to my youngest Son who had accompanied me to the hospital. I was transferred ( No fee was involved) from the QMC to the Cardiac Unit at Nottingham City hospital, after several days being hooked up to a machine numerous Blood Tests and blood pressure tests, along with 7 tablets to take on a Daily basis I was allowed home. I am now slowly on the mend and was assured by a Doctor that I am allowed to go back down the Lane to shout and encourage the Mighty Magpies onto Great Things and to also question the Referee's parentage.
So in typical Monty Python Fashion- I WAS DEAD. BUT I GOT BETTER.

To be honest my friend when I was gone it just felt like I was asleep I felt incredibly happy, euphoric, there was No pain just a feeling of utter contentment. I didn't see anyone one of my family who had passed telling me to go back, nor did I feel I was floating looking down on my physical body, or anything which people who have the experience of dieing and then coming back. There was a Bright white light but that was probably the large lights reflecting on white ceiling of the cubicle I was in, because my Son told me I had my eyes open.
What I don't remember is what the CPR Team did for me, if they got the paddles out or if they thumped me on the Chest to get my heart going again, I knew nothing of the physical world around me. From the time I collapsed till the time I came back seemed to me only mere seconds, one moment I was enjoying, what seemed to me a Wonderful Dream and the next there was this annoying Sod poking his finger into the side of my neck calling my name. Then I was back in the land of the living and all my senses came back to me and it was just like I'd woken up from some Fantastic Dream.
Frightening? Honestly No not for me at that time, however it was so much different for my Son. I wont record his feelings here. Now I don't know how I feel about the whole thing it was if it happened to somebody else, the only worry is sometimes I get a slight side effect from one of the Drugs I'm taking and I think it's happening again, then I calm down and realize there are no other symptoms and my panic goes away.
I am sorry to read about your near-death experience, @Wheelbarrow repair man. You seem to have handled the situation well, but still take care of yourself. It can’t be good for the body, and you may still have some form of shock. I wish you well.
Thankyou for your kind words. They are most welcome as are all the Well Wishers from other PON Members.
Luke Garrard returns to Boreham Wood as Team Manager after just 5 months away.

To be fair to them Boreham Wood massively underachieved last season, I don’t think anyone would’ve predicted they’d get relegated especially after they were just minutes away from getting to a play-off final the season before ????
I wonder if Luke Garrard thought he would’ve got another job in the NL over the summer. He’s been at Boreham Wood for so long I kind of think a change wouldn’t have been a bad thing. Maybe he’s looked back on the relegation and wants to make up for it by getting them promoted again. It’ll be interesting to see how it turns out for him second time around.
It’s similar to Duncan Ferguson’s short-term appointment at FGR, where they sacked him and then re-hired him. It shows he cares about the club.
1 hour ago, menzinho said:o be fair to them Boreham Wood massively underachieved last season, I don’t think anyone would’ve predicted they’d get relegated especially after they were just minutes away from getting to a play-off final the season before ????
I think realistically, they have always been a mid-table National League team.
Their success seemed a bit of an overachievement, but their relegation was them underperforming. I don't think they strengthened themselves all that well compared to other teams and ended up in very poor form. I wonder if their fans have any involvement with this? If they wanted him back, then it would make a bit more sense, but I can't imagine it was easy discussions at first.
What’s all this about?

I am happy, well more than happy. Delighted and over the moon doesn’t really do it. Jodi Jones’s extension gives us peace of mind. I would rather have players under contract than allowing them to wind down. Also, the fact he feels he has something to repay us for, despite all he has done, shows his quality off the pitch.
He could see out his contract, then review all the offers that come in. If a Championship team did, offering him a better payday, how do we compete with that? We have to get our better players extending their contracts where we can. I don’t care if we sell him at the end of this season, provided we have seen his magic and he’s helped us on the pitch. Sure, I would be sad to see him go, but it beats losing talent on a free.
You can’t underestimate the importance of this news, and you can’t downplay it either. He’s ours until a bid comes in, and the contract gives us more time. If he leaves during that time, it will be our decision. As for the positivity, just read or listen to what Jodi has said about his choice. If you ever needed proof that someone is committed to Notts, he’s the one. He wants to improve, but with us. We should be delighted. I wanted to jump around like a madman, but that’s not a good idea, so I just stuck to doing fist bumps! I understand some caution, but Macca is different. Jodi Jones reached the Championship with Coventry City, and without his injuries, I doubt they’d have let him go. Macca spent a long time in the National League, so you can’t blame him for wanting to test himself. Jodi had a short stint in the National League, and he knows League Two and League One well. He knows he’s happy here, it’s great news!

At last. Some movement on these 115 charges that Man City have to answer to.
- Show previous comments 8 more
You could be right @MagpieLane but I do hope that the punishment does fit the crime if charges are proven.
For all those teams that were punished with fines & points deductions for just one charge, justice needs to be seen to be done.
A clear message that no team is above the rules & regulations needs to be given, if Man City is found guilty of some or all of the charges.
Yawn. Do you honestly think the Premier Leagues Blue Eyed boys are really going to suffer Relegation? They'll just probably get a huge fine and a measly points deduction. I honestly Don't think they'll get what they deserve, because it seems it's one rule for some Premier Teams and another rule for other teams.
You may be right @Wheelbarrow repair man but I do hope that if one, or some or all the charges are proved to be true, that justice is seemed to be done for the sake of football in this Country.

@NiftyNick thanks for sharing the link. It's such a tough disease that can strike anyone. It must have been tough for Chris because his speech & his ability to communicate was what makes him so popular as a football pundit & reporter.
There must be thousands of other people have to live with this disease too, & it's great that Chris is ensuring that people like myself know more about it through his documentary.
It's great to know that his condition has shown signs of improvement too. I wish him luck with his new book.
Silly, 3-0 up and you choose to do that. The referee had to act in the manner he did; it’s foolish.

Aye, I got that.
I didn't have anything to add, other than I do think looking up your family tree for real can be interesting.
@liampie
Nah I'm Sorry Mate You Got It All Wrong. Queen Elizabeth I (for it was she who gave permission for English, Not the UK, for the UK was still made up of the independent Nations of England Scotland and Ireland. Wales was considered part of England ) Sailors to capture Spanish Ships and return their cargo to England, where the Crown took a percentage of their Booty/Loot. The Queen stated they were in fact Buccaneers ( which sounds much Nicer Than Pirates???? don't yer think?)
@liampie
@Wheelbarrow repair man
The Spanish were stealing treasures from the indigenous people of central America & the West Indies such as the Aztecs & the Incas in central America
During this period the Spanish were basically at War with England, remember the Armada.
Stolen treasure was being brought to Spain to finance the Spanish military to threaten England.
Privateers were under the Queens Commission & some of them were commissioned to attack Spanish commerce to prevent that treasure getting to Spain.
Famous English privateers were
Sir John Hawkins
Sir Francis Drake
Sir Martin Frobisher
Sir Richard Grenville
Grenville died a hero in 1591 fighting the Spanish fleet despite overwhelming odds so English ships could escape.
These Privateers were not pirates in the literal sense, they were an important part of the English Navy at the time
You have to remember that the French, Dutch and later the Americans had privateers too.
