The season preview was quite brief and to the point, with a bit of talking but not much in the way of an in-depth look at the upcoming season. It was more of a catch-up with the players who were interviewed, who spoke about their thoughts and expectations for the season ahead, but not in great detail. Nevertheless, I appreciate Charlie’s effort in putting it together.

Ive seen quite abit of coverage of notts in the news recently as if we have gone from the last bit of news to something important in terms of some news companies. It was interesting to hear from the manager and some players though.

David McGoldrick is a real force on the field. His ability and technique, combined with his experience and reading of the game, make him a formidable player. Even his goal against Shrewsbury was pure class. It’s a classy strike that showcases his talent. He’s sure to entertain us with his skills.

  1. This definitely worth watching, very entertaining, I was interested to hear Charlie talk about his friendship with “the great man” Colin Slater, he visited him lots and was even present when he sadly passed away.

The Magpie Circle is an excellent platform, but I must admit, this is the first time I've seen it in a while. I don't often come across their YouTube channel, unfortunately.

I enjoy watching The Magpie Circle from time to time, usually when the guests are worth watching. This is one of those episodes that fans should watch. It’s a very good show and I appreciate Mark Stallard putting his free time into featuring on it.

It’s good news that Macaulay Langstaff has signed a new deal. I agree that both him and Notts will have put in a release clause, even if it’s not publicly acknowledged. Teams who may be watching to see how he does in League Two might not be tempted to pay a premium for his services, but it puts Notts in a strong hand when it does come to these discussions. I think for now we just have to enjoy seeing him play for us.

I remember him, he was a right back. Really solid player too. Apart from that, I remember him being Welsh and I'm sure he joined us on loan.

I thought he'd managed Leeds at some point, but maybe I'm getting mixed up there.

He wasn’t around for long. I don’t remember if he joined for the season or on loan, but he did okay. We have had better and far worse players, but it’s a name I think is easy to forget.

Danny Mandroiu is a decent player, I have seen him (televised) several times when I used to watch the Irish leagues. @Dripsey3 should be aware of him too.

I know Alistair Smith from his short time at Mansfield but not much else. Lasse Sorensen is someone I have heard of, but I don't recall having seen him perform. Danny Mandroiu will only be on the up in my opinion. I can easily see him playing in the Championship in a few years time.

@Piethagoram the club needs to appoint you as some sort of scout. ;)

i agree with the three players you have named as being good performers for lincoln, but i honestly dont know much about any of them. if we could sign sorensen i would be pretty happy, he looked class.

  2. The days are getting shorter, tacky new shirts have been unveiled and fans up and down the country are putting their faith in a new 38-year-old workhorse who once had a good season for Burnley. It can only mean the main event is around the corner - the PON prediction league!

At least two days before every matchday I will post a thread with eight matches to predict (or six if we're REALLY busy), two each from the Championship, League One, League Two and the Conference. You then reply with your predicted scores. The cut-off time for posting is kick-off (in this case 3pm). At the end of it all I'll then post a table with the current standings.

Scoring system: 3 points for a correct score and 1 for a correct result. So if you predict Swindon to beat Walsall 2-1 and they do, you get 3 points; if Swindon win 1-0, you get 1 point. Each round you can also choose one match as your joker - any points you win for that match are then doubled.

EVERYONE is welcome to take part! Just post your predictions underneath, and remember to assign a joker. And if you have any difficulty, just drop me a line. Good luck!

Blackburn Rovers v West Bromwich Albion

    Plymouth Argyle v Huddersfield Town

    Carlisle United v Fleetwood Town

    Shrewsbury Town v Cheltenham Town

    Morecambe v Walsall

    Tranmere Rovers v Barrow

    Aldershot v Oxford City

    Gateshead v Boreham Wood

There's no certainty of results ,never mind scoreline all season.I agree it is harder to predict with so many unknown factors early season, but the unpredictable factor still remains. Just go back to last Saturday and how do you legislate for that awful backpass at Sutton, which ended with a sending off and a penalty.Things like that don't happen very often.Well on the same afternoon Derby's Bradley also made a backpass which resulted in an away goal. How can you forecast things like that? The prediction league is just for fun though(apart from  @Fan of Big Tone)

When I watched Sutton United's highlights, I could see the large gap and it made me re-think the discussion between me and @Piethagoram. I wished their were extended highlights, so I could see what people meant about it could have been double digits. The regular highlights were hard enough to watch, but we were so week on the ball and from a defensive point of view.

    3. liampie

      liampie

its very easy to see where notts went wrong, the space at times is a joke and we dont seem to be defending as a team. its just silly how we did not regroup or try to limit their space, sutton looked very structured, notts very disconnected and mostly due to the defence.

    1. Chris

      Chris

It makes you wonder when you see such poor ratings for players like Kyle Cameron, the issue I have with losing to Sutton is that teams will have a blue print on how to make us suffer. The players need to be stronger, Luke Williams needs to try to reduce the damage by making tactical changes - especially when we lose a player.

    2. liampie

      liampie

it shows that the defence is not quite up to scratch with the players in front of them, i think we have a good set of players but they need to defend better together.

defensively, if we dont control the game we should not play the high line and should revert to playing deeper.

i think sometimes its a evil for us to try to play pretty passing football when we are not in the control to do it, i would prefer us to hoof it away and then get the midfield to hold the ball better. we just dont do well when times realise how to make us weaker. there is no fight after that or change.

  3. New Rule changes were on full display for the upcoming season in the community shield yesterday between Arsenal and Man City. Dissent and kicking the ball away results in an automatic yellow card as well as changing the way the time is added on.

I'm actually in favour of these changes as it will hopefully stamp out time wasting and players have more to think about before doing some things that could stop the flow of the game which could allow a more free flowing game.

What do you guys make to the new rulings?

If the ref sticks to the rules or actually notices it will be good

    3. Chris

      Chris

It's been a rule that if a player kicks a ball away, or holds onto for a prolonged team as a means to prevent the opposition would result in a yellow card. I remember Alan Shearer being sent off for tapping the ball as he passed it for Newcastle, which Shearer called ridiculous in his post match comments. However, it's been something referees haven't been consistent with. The rules state that once a free kick has been awarded, the opposition shouldn't touch the ball or prevent it from being taken. I assume these changes are just more stricter guidelines, but I can see it being conveniently forgotten at the lowest level.

    4. liampie

      liampie

i also thought these were in place, referees at our level will always been inconsistent with what should happen. i swear some of them just make it up as they go along.

I didn't feel very well Saturday/Sunday, I fell asleep and would wake up to see my laptop showing the score. I wondered what the hell was going on. When I did finally wake up, about 11ish, I noticed Sutton United had uploaded their highlights. I felt sickened by how that great support were let down, you can hear our fans and I felt frustrated. We need to see better, nerves don't cause that. A lack of understanding for opposition does.

Owning your own ground can also provide significant benefits. Take Coventry, for example, who sold their own ground and had to ground share before returning to their own stadium as renters alongside the rugby club. In my opinion, it makes little sense to suggest that not owning the land is better. This seems like the wrong point to make, especially in a discussion about the threat of ground sharing with our neighbours across the river. Personally, I would not want to rent land from Nottingham Council.

    3. AmericanPie

      AmericanPie

While ground sharing with Forest wouldn't be feasible, I agree with @liampie and other fans who have emphasized the benefits of owning the land. Ownership provides security, and any ambitious team aiming to compete at the highest level must possess their facilities outright. It's the only way to ensure future-proofing, as the council could easily decide to sell the land to developers once the lease expires, just as easily as bad owners might.

    4. cheeky~k8

      cheeky~k8

There was a chance that Notts could have pulled it back if Aidan Stone hadn’t been sent off, but it might not have made a difference. Notts have played just as badly before and then picked up once things had settled down. I think it was more than just a bad day at the office; Notts just looked woeful.

You'd assume that in most cases, but not yesterday. The players allowed themselves to be bullied yesterday, and I found it alarming. That shouldn't be happening even if you're a man down - if anything you've got to step up. It wasn't the team selection I'd have chosen, but if they don't compete the manager has every right to feel let down.

I haven't had chance to listen to the post match interviews or anything but I did watch the highlights on Instagram.

The goals looked avoidable and highlighted problems we may have defensively. Also, the back pass from Cameron that led to Stone being sent off was absolutely horrendous.

The 4th goal though looked like there was a foul near the halfway line in the lead up to the goal.

On a positive, Langstaff did superbly well in setting up McGoldrick for the goal.

As disheartening as the result may have been on our EFL return, I hope fans continue to back the team rather than turn on them as it was only the first game of the season and things can only get better. Let's hope this was just a blip and better things are to come in the season.

    3. DangerousSausage

      DangerousSausage

@Fozzy touches on a good point, the players weren't where they needed to be mentally. There's been a lot of hype around the team and noise about our EFL return, and maybe they got carried away with it. Sutton appeared much more focused on the here and now.

Maybe this is an experience the team needed. Now it's time to let go of last season, ignore what the bookies are saying and concentrate on doing the simple things.

    4. Piethagoram

10 minutes on the bus for me on Saturday. Notts hierarchy seemed aware of the defence needing strengthening , see the rumours over trying to sign Terence Vancooten from Stevenage.

Yes, we need a RCB with height, pace and power.

What frustrates me from Saturday, we should have been aware of the way Sutton played. Just gave the impression, we could turn up and win. Big mistake

  7. Next match up is the ELF Cup on Tuesday when Notts take on Lincoln City in the cup at Meadow Lane.

How many links can we find between the two clubs.

I’ve got an obscure one for you Bert Loxley who I can just about remember playing for Notts between 1952 (the year I was born) and 1964, twelve years making 245 appearances, he became Lincoln’s manager in 1970-71.

  8. I haven't seen the club put out anything about this, so I thought I'd bang the drum a bit. As Notts are back in the Proper Leagues, iFollow video passes are back too. UK-based fans can buy video match passes for matches not kicking off at 3pm on a Saturday. For exiles like me, the service is a godsend - we can buy match passes for all games, or a full season pass for €166. That's slightly cheaper than the National League stream, which cost €80 for half a season and turned out to be pretty good value.

So if you're based abroad like me, it might be a good idea to have a look:

The subscription service is truly a godsend. I have already subscribed, and I would even be willing to pay more for multi-camera views. However, I'm content with a single point of view as it still brings me closer to the action than I've been in a while. It feels like having my season ticket, and I believe any exiled fan would share the same sentiment.

    4. DangerousSausage

      DangerousSausage

I got in slightly later yesterday so I only tuned it at the end of the first half. It does what it says on the tin, there didn't seem to be any technical problems, there were replays, there was commentary and the updates when goals had been scored elsewhere were a nice touch. Oh, and there were six goals, woo hoo.

I've got a gripe though - why does iFollow STILL not work with Chromecast? National League TV (which I hope I'll never have to use again) offered this from day one, and it worked perfectly. Why is this not possible in iFollow's seventh season of streaming? I'm happy to be able to watch the matches and it's good value for that alone, but squinting at your laptop screen is very 2017.

In my opinion, Mark Stallard speaks with great wisdom and insight. He has a lot of valuable things to say about Notts County and the challenges they face. The team must work hard to achieve success, as the depth and quality of the squad alone are not enough. It is encouraging to see that Mark rates the squad highly and recognises the potential that Luke Williams sees in them. Overall, it is a fantastic interview.

  9. Dave Bracegirdle

    BBC Radio Nottingham commentator

While last season will live long in the memory of those beleaguered Notts County fans that had become accustomed to disappointment and regret, no-one is expecting the club’s ownership to rest on their laurels at merely ending a four-year exile in the National League.

Head coach Luke Williams has been backed to the hilt since arriving at Meadow Lane a year ago and he delivered an entertaining, possession-based brand of football that smashed records – and was ultimately rewarded with promotion via an unforgettable day out at Wembley.

Other than the anticipated departure of star Portuguese playmaker Ruben Rodrigues, Williams has managed to hang on to the majority of his players and been able to supplement his squad with several key signings, including a return to his hometown club for former Derby County striker David McGoldrick.

Top three will be the aim and few would be surprised if they should go on to achieve that.

  12. This programme was back on air Wednesday night after the off season break with Mark Shardlow hosting, the guests were Charlie McParland, Kelvin Wilson and Seamus Donagh.

Of course amongst other things they were discussing where they thought Notts would finish, no one said they’d be automatically promoted they thought they’d finish in the playoffs, one tipped Mansfield for automatic promotion, Kelvin Wilson thought Mansfield would fall short again the others thought they’d be in he playoffs.

If Notts and Mansfield both finish in the playoffs this would bring the possibility of a Notts v Stags final at Wembley, wow can you imagine that!

It was also said that Stags had sold 5,200 season tickets is that more than Notts? If it is I’m surprised.

I’m not sure why some people might underestimate Notts County or appear biased against them. It’s possible that they have their own reasons for thinking that Notts County may not achieve promotion via automatics or even reach the playoffs. However, to completely rule out the possibility seems a bit odd. It’s important to remember that anything can happen in football and Notts County has the potential to achieve great things.

  13. Morning all what are we all going to be up to this weekend? Anything exciting or mundane. I guess most exciting thing will be Notts first game at Sutton. What else will you be up to let PoN know your plans.

Today I’ll be hoping and praying the postman brings my grandsons Notts shirts so they can have them before they go on holiday tonight. It’s curry night so we are having a Chicken Biryani homemade by Mrs. T. Later I’ll watch Sheffield Wed v Southampton on the box.

Tomorrow it looks like a rainy day but hopefully it won’t be too bad for my park run 🤞then of course I’ll be glued to the radio to listen to Notts commentary.

Sunday is yet to be decided we are decluttering the house at the moment and selling some unwanted stuff so I might carry on with that.

Whatever you are up to I hope it’s a good one for you.

We waited in but the Notts shirts for our grandchildren didn’t turn up I am really disappointed with the service I’ve received I know they have been busy but I was assured they’d been despatched Wednesday first class. So we had to wave our family off on their holiday to Croatia without their shirts. We gave the boys some Euros we had so they could buy something when they got there so that cheered them up.

I’ve just watched the Sheffield Wed v Southampton game which was good. Tomorrow it should be Park Run but if the weather is really bad I’ll give it a miss.
